I was doing everything right, except wetting the line. Great video! Thank's for showing the arbour knot and demonstrating what fluorocarbon does to itself when cinched down. Great idea to show what happens and how it creates those micro abrasions. The Palomar is the strongest know there is, because it bends the line the least amount of times in the finished product and every bend weakens the line strength. The Palomar retains about 90-95% of the line strength when done right. Superior to any other knot. It is strong and the end result is simple in terms of bends.

Great video. I am so done with over rated/over priced fluorocarbon. Tie the same good knot on clear mono, with a good bait, and catch just as many or more fish, with 30% better abrasion resistance.

Yep.........me too. I posted a comment here over 6 yrs ago saying there's nothing wrong with a palomar knot on fluoro, so long as the knot is tied carefully, like this video shows. HOWEVER, I have since proven to myself that fluoro is the biggest money making scam in fishing history. It is by far the weakest of all fishing lines. That's because fluoro belongs to the GLASS family. Every type of stress causes fractures on the entire length of fluoro off the spool, all the way to your hook or lure. I got sick & tired of losing fish ( even small fish ) on the hook set or even lures during casting, I switched 100% back over to tried & true Berkley/Trilene Big Game mono, and over 90% of my line breakage issues disappeared. I'm DONE with fluoro. The only thing it's good for is getting deep diving lures a little deeper ( because fluoro sinks ) in clear water with NO heavy cover around. And even then, ya have to use brand new fluoro for every trip out on the water, because every hook set, every snag, even big or powerful fish are all causing all of those tiny FRACTURES throughout the entire length of fluoro line off your spool. KZfaq ch: SALT STRONG did an amazing video/test that proves once & for all just how sorry fluoro truly is for fishing, and how quickly & easily it breaks, even when brand new. It's over-priced & over-hyped garbage.

Great video, I do love the palomar knot for my braided line, for Fluoro and mono I prefer the uni knot, feels a little more forgiving when dealing with the line memory and it’s always been pretty strong and reliable.

*I was pleased with Trilene mono line **enjoyable.fishing** recommend performance (25 lb. test) because it offers smooth casting with no tangles/bird's nest in the spool. And, knots can be tied effectively with ease. I would recommend.*

without doubt, the very best knot. after tying a few times, second nature. you end up with 2 wraps around the eye. I've always doubled the line, and passed it thru the eye,to start the knot, but with my eyesight going a little south, I will be passing it thru twice this year to start the knot, never to old to learn, thanks for the vid!

Thanks for the tip, because nobody talks about the knot tricks which is VERY important. So many people changing their lines or try to find better lines because cannot tie properly. They choose thicker lines etc. Thanks again.

If tied correctly,,it will hold. It will hold a 11ft white sturgeon, or smolt nibbler. One of the key steps that all of the Palomar videos fail to miss,,is that you cannot allow the lines to cross on the underside of the hook eye where it finally tightens down. Those must not cross on that final draw up or they will let the line slip eventually and snap when setting a hook. The crossing will occur if you let the hook slip from your grasp while tying.

Beautiful succint explanation of why most knots fail. I have been using a knot testing machine for over three decades. here is what I learned and what you just explained. Knots fail for four reasons: 1. Line crossing....Same as an overhand knot, reduces knot strength 50%...your 10lb is now 5 lb. 2. cinching too soon/carelessly. usually creates a cross...same as above. 3. Failure to lubricate. friction kills ALL monofilaments...braids too.. 4. failure to cinch/tighten evenly.. Friction, slippage and crosses are what make knots fail, presuming no damage to the line. well done! .

Best part about this is this is exactly how I've always tied my palomar knots because I use alot of Spooks so I need alot of excess in my loop and this was the only way to keep that long loop from slipping to the under side of the eye of the hook.

Good info. I am a slack line hook setter and i was breaking off on the hook set. At the bait. So I was actually wondering if the flouro was bad?? Then I changed knots and did not break off any more. I like the concept of double line thru the eyelet adds more strength. i am gong to go back to the palomar knot and test your idea. Hoping you are correct. Gotta see for myself.

heard others say the same about fc and palomar being a bad combination. I also have not had a problem with it. I usually use a slightly heavier fc leader directly tied to a thinner copolymer mainline. that line to line connection is where it usually breaks for me.

I just pulled a 5lbs bass from a lake on the same line and same knot,no problems,as he said, floro does not like abrasions,i find that most of my breaks are fighting fish running line into objects under water during fight causing breaks and loss of fish with floro. Floro is a great line for lures needing to go deep, the draw back, cant rub against nothing for it will break.

I have issues with tying a fluro leader to braid.... I use 15lb fluro and 50lb braid and if I don't get that knot perfect it will cut into itself after awhile, or just worry me to death causing a me to re-tie after a few fish... Usually will take me 3 or 4 times to tie until I am 100% over confident in the knot where both lines come together perfect and its just damn near impossible to break/cut/slip.... Its amazing how strong fluro to braid is when its done correctly

I have been fishing Spider Wire braid, after I had tried several other braids on baitcasters and never tried anything else since. I even took the mono off of my little ultra light open face spinning reels and put braid on them. Only thing I have to worry about is being careful of not breaking the rods. Usually have 6 rods on the deck and even after several years and the green braid turns almost white , I have never had a break off. Have no idea how much money I have saved. Use to change out my mono line at least 3 times a year. I don't remember what year I started using Spider year, but started Bass fishing shortly after coming home from Nam. What some other said, was true about fluorocarbon line back then was stiff like fine wire. Old man still fighting Agent Orange

that's when i tried it too and i prefer it over many of the modern braids. I still have 2 unopened boxes of the spiderwire Original from around 20 years ago. the black and red box. If i remember right, the average cost for bulk spooling in typical freshwater reel pound test was $.25-.45/yard which was a lot considering trilene and stren were under $3/spool back then.

When you break it down it is a really very cost effective and you don't loose as many lures either. When I was fishing Slider Worms in the hot summer , I lost very few fish on my ultra lite or lures, because I could just straighten the hook. I could also feel about any pick up. I carried a old drum stick to wrap the line around, to pull with. You were right about the black and red box. Still have several, suppose they are collectables now ? :-) vic

Our take is you need to be careful with every knot. You cross your wraps on a uni knot it will cut. You cross your wraps on a san diego jam knot, it will cut. You've got to tie the knots right regardless of which one you choose, for them to work well with fluoro.

I've been thinking of trying the palomar knot, so I've been testing it against all the other knots everyone says is better for flouro. I've tied the palomar, using 6lb line, exactly the way you showed in this video and it has beaten every single one of the "better" knots. A lot of the other knots broke very easily, so I can't understand why everyone thinks they are so good. Maybe they aren't tying the palomar correctly, but some of the guys making these videos are pros.

Yes, I've tried it thanks, it's a good knot. Every now and then I'll give something different a try. At the moment I'm using a uni knot, which I know some people will say is not so strong. But it's quick and easy and I'm tying swivel clips to 20lb leaders with it, so it's strong enough. If you are looking for a braid to leader knot, I can highly recommend the FG knot, if tied correctly, it's excellent.

Qoul Wan Rite on, yea the fg knot is the best leader knot, I like the uni to uni also it works well but the fg is more low profile and goes thru the guides well, it took me like 5 trys when I first watched how to tie it but it is a great knot, like a Chinese finger trap
