Truth. I went from a Rebel, 20D, 1D2N, 1D3, 5DIV, EOS-R and there was never any jump in image quality (besides maybe noise at high ISOs) whenever I got a new camera. I had to practise and practise and research to make slow gains and whenever I stopped practising, I got worse again.

Nice vid! Definitely agree that people should be focusing less on gear especially for photography. Applies for video as well, but I think you can see the difference in gear a bit more for video than you can photos....especially if you start getting into editing styles and some of the more retro/filmy edits that are popular right now, it really makes the camera not matter much at all.

Good points! I started with a 30D, upgraded to an 80D, now rocking the R5. The 30D will always have a special place in my heart. A handful of my most memorable shots were with that cam and the kit lens which I still own, EF 28-135mm. Side note: I like how at 1:31 the model's face looks nice and soft on the apsc vs all the detail of the R5.

Yeah for some reason I feel most of us will always have a soft spot for our first cameras lol. And yes! If you’re someone who wants to keep retouching minimal and natural.. lower MP cameras and “lower end” lenses help!! I personally like to do retouching so the extra detail comes in handy!

You are so right. I remember going from a t2i to an A7iii in 2018. The first thing I remember is how much I loved my A7iii and then I decided to compare photos to my old t2i photos and I was like “wait I like the look of my t2i photos more” haha. I felt like I had just played an expensive joke on myself. And that’s when I learned that it’s not always about the gear. The superior video capabilities did ultimately make me keep the A7iii though.

@@cammackey can I make a suggestion for a series with your X100V as you have used it as a ‘digital film camera’. With many old film stock no longer available, such as Kodachrome 64, I would be interested in your opinion in how you can replicate such a classic film - you are the master at colour grading digital files (which is why I subscribe to learn). I use my X100S as my JPEG film camera and would like to create some presets in Capture One. Two of my friends at Woking Archery club have been selected for the Tokyo Olympics - however I’m rubbish in comparison!

When you do a comparison, then yes you will see the difference between a cheaper Canon and something like a R5. But you don't say 'Wow what cheap Canon is that photo made with?' That does not happen. The only reason why you could react like that, is when the composition, light, or angle is weird.

*ART* I feel like people say this all the time and some people just don't want to believe it. One thing I have been wondering is did you watch a lot of movies made in the ’70s as a kid, page through a lot of fashion magazines? I’ve never spent that much time on the West Coast or in the Southwest, but I do know that New Mexico is like an Art Mecca, LA still has western movie royal blood and I’ve always wondered how that mixes and spreads to people in their art. I will never forget seeing a couple of people wearing pinstripe shorts 🩳 or pinstriped shorts with a button-up pinstriped vest and T-Shirt admiring how ”Old West” inspired it was and casual it was. That's shit you will only see west of I guess Chicago and maybe only in LA.

I use a canon 5d classic cause I love the colors... I also have a 645 with an aptus 22mpx digital back, it’s one of the last ccd sensor really 6x45 in size with a great light and colors falloff, this setup cost me less than 1200€ and give me results i’m proud of, but dealing with old gear ( 10/12 years) means some quirks to. No high iso (iso 25, 50 max on the digital back), auto focus struggle a lot, no video mode etc. But I don’t care, only count the final result, and all this limitations make me work much more on lighting, composition, styling etc.

I agree and disagree. In the past three years I’ve been through 10 different cameras from cheap to top of the line. Each time I post a photo or video, people can never tell what is what. And now people who have been following me for a while are now starting to leave comments like “I think you could jsut make any camera look good..” Not trying to toot my own horn haha. But the statements are there. This is where people start calling me cocky, but I’ve been shooting for over 10 years now. Give me any camera and I’ll use it to it strengths and still get what I want from it. I could shoot a commercial gig on the canon T2i and when using light properly, direction, styling, location, etc is all wayyyyyyy more important.

I was shooting an event one time on my canon and half of the shots the flash didn't fire from the 580EXII...turns out the hot shoe plate on the camera was loose and failed to make contact half of the time.
