👍 Never had the most money or technology to film my swing when I was growing up, but my dad and I would just go hit buckets of balls at the cage at the field nearest our house and always preached to me that the back shoulder will cause your head to rotate regardless of if you hit the ball or not if you made a full swing. Really helped me as I grew up because I realized the coaches that said that really seemed to be falling for the cliche.

Helping my now 14y/o son, I figured this out as well about 1-2 years ago. Now I look for the head pulled basically before barrel is in the zone. Typically this is simply a result of something else going wrong (typically bat drag, due to a few potential reasons).

Wow what a great break down. I have told my players to keep their head in there when I thought their head was pulling out. Definitely has me rethinking this one.

👍 Good one Matt!! As you mentioned, the head follows the rotation of the body. Most people do not understand or are aware of the force a pitched ball exerts on the bat and how it diminishes one's follow through. On my iphone, I have a high-speed, slow motion film of a MLBer at bat/ball contact that reveals the bat slowing, which is imperceptible to the naked eye at normal velocity. Now I will video the video you just posted to further support the "head pull" misdirection narrative. Thanks a bunch!!

10000000 percent!!!! We provide insights on every single swing and its terrible. All we should do is coach at practice - and only focus on one aspect of a swing at a time. Move your hip this way, your doing this, this, this, this. Wiggle your ears more, you big toe is out of alignment. As if the batter is going to listen, adjust, and hit a bomb. One aspect - 50 swings to try to get that aspect in flow. Batting is so complicated and no one goes from bat boy to Aaron Judge in one barrage of hyper active coaching.

Being on-time hitting a moving ball is so hard. Learning to become aware of swing timing in the box is what a good hitter does. Guilty of saying hitters don't keep eyes on the ball long enough when seeing their head movements after not so good swings. Great video on old-school verbal coaching that isn't always helpful to players.

I feel like a goddamn fool as I'm the one who throws live batting practice to the kids and I'm always telling them to stop shifting their head like that😂 but the breakdown makes absolutely perfect sense

Definitely agree when it comes to older kids but quite a few younger kids really pull off the a lot.

I agree they do, I just think too many coaches think they do every time they swing and miss

good analysis. however, IMHO, it would have been nice to see an example of a hitter actually pulling out of the swing.

technically he did pull off the ball, but with his lead arm/elbow, he took an inside pitch swing on a ball on the outer third and ran out of barrel. so did he pull his head, no, but he did pull off vs push through extension.
