Why your sidechain sounds bad | Best way to sidechain in FL Studio 2020

If someone tells you sidechaining sounds bad or horrible, it's a tell sign that they don't know how to sidechain properly. Especially when it comes to hip hop, trap and or any other bass heavy genre. 9 out of 10 times, proper sidechaining will absolutely improve the sound, add more power to your track and clean up your low end to deliver even more impact. It also helps your mastering chain in terms of any extra compression or limiting you add to your mix.

An even better way (IMHO) is using the fruity envelope controller. You have even more controll, and you don't need the hassle of setting up a sidechain sample etc.

So I just tested this out. While it definitely has more control, I'm finding the best sounding are still the basic shapes, so there isn't any need for more control outside of what peak control does because the sound gets worse otherwise. I also noticed it's harder to match the original output of the volume. The way I copy and past the volume onto the base knob in peak controller doesn't translate to envelope controller. This is due to the increased amount of control with the envelope knob. So even copy and pasting doesn't get you the exact value...you have to manually adjust the knobs. When I finally did get the settings right, I A/B with peak control and there are obvious artifacts coming from envelope controller. I can't seem to dial in settings that are equal to or superior to peak controller. Definitely test this out yourself because it's a night and day difference. I originally loved the concept because of what you said about setting adding the sample. Turns out, you're still adding env controller like you would add the sample anyway. I already have mine setup in the template so it's no hassle at all really. Overall, it's easier to dial in settings on peak control and actually sounds better. The extra amount of control on env control isn't adding anything beneficial in terms of how I like my sidechain to sound...it's actually making it worse. This might be why I don't see anyone really digging into this plugin. In theory, this should be a go to plugin for automation. It's just not stacking up vs. just doing it in the playlist or using peak controller. Again, don't take my word for it...actually test and do what's best for you.

Always Aloof also you’re not using the technique I’m speaking about. It probably does work well with fruity balance. The artifacts are with the eq ducking. Again it’s a night at day difference. But I already see this isn’t something you do so we are talking about two different things here. Definitely keep using it with fruity balance if that works for you.

Nice work bro. Wondering how long youve been working with FL for? Seems like you have an extremely thorough understanding of the details within the DAW. Do you have any tips for learning the intricacies of FL? Ive been working on 12 for about 3 years and have a broad understanding, but I would love to further it by learning the smaller details
@Inflightmuzik
@Inflightmuzik 4 жыл бұрын
Since version 4. Read the manual for the smaller details that people look over. From there you can do specific youtube searches for more information that you're missing after that. The forum is incredibly valuable. But you need a legal copy of FL Studio. I assume since you're on 12, it's cracked. FL Studio has lifetime free updates so anyone using older versions, specifically 12, I usually come to that conclusion. Hopefully you'll make your way to the forums one of these days and you'll get to where you want to be in FL.

Those weird artifacts is the distortion which is made by the body of the kick so it's better to use a sidechain trigger which is like a ghost kick typically made of white noise and you will get nice clean sidechain effect even from fruity limiter. So all you gonna do is load up and 3xOsc set all oscillators random and make a tight volume envelope
@Inflightmuzik

Blue Eyes you’re still compressing which inherently isn’t as clean as ducking. Peak controller will always be a cleaner sound. Again if you’re doing edm and actually want that pumping effect, different story

are you using Floorfish on your Vocals in your Videos?
@Inflightmuzik
@Inflightmuzik 4 жыл бұрын
no. There is like a string of videos for like one or two weeks where I tested using a noise gate in SLOBS during the recording. As you can tell, the vocals get cut off and the sound is jarring when the background noise peeks through in some videos, so I stopped using them months ago. Also, floorfish is a noise gate. So whenever you hear that effect in the future, now you know what that effect is called. Floorfish is just the brand name of a specific noise gate. It's great for a free plugin. But most daws (or audio recording software in general like slobs/obs) have noise gates that come stock anyway.

Moky Larry because they don’t care about manipulating their drum hits in the sampler. This is common in EDM where they have a ton of drum samples and rather just scan for the best sample vs. manipulating one.

thanks for this vid it helped me. i still struggle getting kicks and 808s to sound great together. sidechaining still confuses me a bit because i know a good 808 has that initial knock that comes from quickly moving from a higher pitch to a lower pitch, but i feel like sidechaining just takes that away. This is why it makes more sense to me conceptually to mix them without sidechaining. i know that alex tumay (the best mixer of trap music right now imo) doesn't sidechain, but i'm not sure what he does do to mix kicks and 808s. for me right now, it definitely sounds better to sidechain, and the tips in the video help, but i'm still not sold on sidechaining conceptually. hopefully in the future i can figure out how to make kicks and 808s hit hard without sidechaining. i would appreciate it if u could try to help me understand the point of getting 808 samples with that initial punch if sidechain is gonna take (most) of it away anyways
@Inflightmuzik
@Inflightmuzik 4 жыл бұрын
Because the kick and 808 don’t always play at the same time. When they don’t, people still want the 808 to have an attack just without the knock of the kick. If you did that right, then combining them will cause a spike in volume and makes your final limiter/master chain work harder. Sidechain fixes that
@MghUnit407
@MghUnit407 4 жыл бұрын
I don't understand how that highhat sound comes into play. You said that we're gonna take its transient but you didn't seem to use it during the sidechaining?
@Inflightmuzik
@Inflightmuzik 4 жыл бұрын
I think you missed something because it's literally what I'm using the entire time. The channel that says sidechain is the hihat. The mixer track that says sidechain is the hihat. The envelope and the out knob is adjusted so that I'm mostly only using the beginning of the hat (the transient), which is why peak controller has a perfect angle to the volume ducking. No part of the video other than showing you fruity limiter isn't using the hi hat. Hope that helps you understand what's going on.

1:40... this is because you have sustain in 0, so, turn up sustain almost in 50% or less to get rid of that weird compression.
@Inflightmuzik
@Inflightmuzik 4 жыл бұрын
Duvan Camilo Rueda Salcedo You don’t have to turn up the sustain. You can turn up the release and clear that up as well. Neither of those are a solution. You turn up the sustain and you no longer have the curve you want. You turn up the release you no longer have the curve you want. All you did was create more compression, which is the point of the video, to avoid having to do that and get the exact ducking shape you need/want without artifacts. There is a cost to everything you do when it comes to sidechain compression. The technique I showed avoids all and any of that. But definitely keep doing what works for you. Again, I think I mentioned in the video if you’re doing Edam and are going for the pumping effect, then yes, sidechain compression with fl limiter would be an option.
