Something I wanted to note, this comparison is solely for the previous Yugioh anime! I'm not trying to make the case that the girls of SEVENS are amazing from an entire anime perspective, because I don't think that they are. But from a Yugioh anime perspective, they certainly are well above what we are used to IMO

I think the saddest part about this is that what they're doing isn't anything revolutionary to what's out there nowadays...they're just giving the girls more time to show their skill, personalities which then allows them to be more fleshed out and breathe. Imo Gallop was so scared to change their formula so bad, that the only way for things to change would only be with "new blood" and ideas.

it is good to know that the yugioh girls in the seven anime are not 1: brainwashed 2: turned evil 3: trapped in another place 4: erased from existence or in alexis's case all of the above

We’re still only 40 episodes in so I’ll personally approach this topic with caution, but it’s undeniable that Sevens has done a big contribution to stop the curse of the yugioh girl.

I absolutely LOVE how Sevens is handling their female characters! This is something I’ve been waiting over 20 years for! The only reoccurring girl who hasn’t dueled yet, other than Princess G, is Nico from the news club. They’re giving the girls great development and making them relevant to the plot.

I have to say its not just the female characters that got better writing in this series- it's ALL of them- even the one-off characters are actually memorable and enjoyable which isnt something I can really say about the other yugioh entries

Romin, Asana, Tiger, Princess G, even Mimi and Sushiko. Sevens is nice to the ladies.

I watched Romin's duel twice. Her combos were jaw dropping.

Eight months later and Romin managed to defeat Roa, Asana beat Neil (and Tiger) and Tiger also defeated Yuga. Not to mention two new relevant girls with Yuka (part of the Goha Siblings/Presidents and who defeated Romin) and Nanaho (Ranze and Rinnosuke's cousin) where the former was one of the antags in the 5th arc while Nanaho is currently an antagonist. And unlike Asana and Yuka, she is way more evil and actually has fun messing with people. There's also Kakoko and Umiko but since they disappeared after their duels (and didn't win them) I don't put too much thoughts into them tbh. Oh, and now we even have Yuga's mother so Mimi's finally not the only parent we get to see properly lol.

I am worried if we might be calling things too quickly, because at this many episodes Yuzu was given praise for her story presence+duels. Then later Arc-V. or Carly+Aki being huge deals early on. Although having a main girl beat a protag fairly, a female antagonist (a new innovation) beat the protag fairly and Mimi possibly being another female antagonist with greater ties leads to Sevens doing pretty well. Romin has had just as many onscreen wins as Aoi in 40 episodes compared to the entirety of Vrains. She was also an active duelist who mattered more to the story than Tea, Alexis and Tori. So I could see her being in the higher tier.

About the girl characters ? He totally agree. Studio bridge did really good job. It kinda makes me wonder if this makes girls pick up rush duels in Japan more ? I’d say that bridge handling the girl characters in similar way that they are handled in Cardfight vanguard. It’s awesome to see that finally yugioh does give proper treatment to them. I wish that they won’t change this treatment later in the show. It’s really good that we have female and male characters that are getting fair treatment. I’m really I liked the bracelet girls but Arc-V really destroyed them as characters. I guess the same could be said about Aoi zaizen, Asuna & Akiza. It shame that many characters that had so much potential went uninitialized.

I absolutely 100% agree. As much as I love some of the previous Yugioh girls such as Aki, Rio, Serena and Aoi, they were treated poorly later on in their respective shows. With Yugioh Sevens, Studio Bridge has done an incredible and phenomenal job with the girl characters. This is what we've been waiting to see for a long time. Each of them have different yet unique personalities and traits that make them incredible and such a joy to watch. All it took was 1000 episodes and a change in studios for it to happen. I know that people like that SEVENS is lighter in tone, and I do too (wouldn't have it any other way), but I do hope that we see this level of writing for female characters against a more serious backdrop next show.

I remember back when people said that the only way for women to get any respect in Yu-Gi-Oh was for the main protagonist to be one.

I haven't even seen the rest of Sevens but for some reason I always predicted Romin would be treated better than the past female leads, even though everyone's first thought on her was that "She's wasn't going to be a duelist." What I DIDN'T expect was that this wouldn't be exclusive to Romin as a character as Sevens. Glad to know the show exceeded my expectations. Still gonna be wishing my namesake was done better!!

I am glad that female yugioh characters are actually done well so far in yugioh sevens. I still think that Anzu Mazaki aka Tea Gardner was a female character done well in yugioh, and she's still my favorite female character in all of yugioh.

I feel you made a great case for the girls in the show because they actually feel INVOLVED with the events. I might wanna catch up on Yugioh 7s if the writing is really good. I just was a bit put off at the animation change and change of dueling but I'm willing to give it more of a chance after this. I was rewatching 5Ds first 64 episodes and I noticed how involved the girls felt on that season when compared to something like duel monsters or Gx. Aki's duels in that season were honestly some of my favorite duels and it just makes me more upset that she wasn't considered important enough to even duel Goodwin at the end of it despite having more screen time than someone like Crow (who isn't bad but I just wish Aki wasn't shafted cuz Blackwings or whatever it was) and I really just loved the immediate duel between Carly and Sayer (I'm sorry I forget his sub name) right after Carly becomes a dark signer. It was cathartic to see someone put him on his place. And Aki vs Misty (both duels) had some of the better interactions in my honest opinion.

Sevens is currently the strongest show regarding Females and minor characters. Both really get a lot of development and attention. Girl characters prior had following issues: Brainwashing, couldnt duel at all, were cheerleaders or all of the above. Which is just sad, because they had potential and were thrown away because no real reason

To be fair, Carly in terms of 5D's got shafted due to her JP VA being involved with that cult. If that wasn't a thing, I think her character as a whole would've stuck around for longer and more prevalent instead of like you said, being a comedic character. I just finished watching 5D's and to see Carly go from this very in depth, facing death, overcoming death and accepting it to hiding in Jack's trunk thing with all those gifts.....yea not a good change

Having not watched Sevens yet, I'll say one thing... That guitar-duel-disk has me asking so many questions...

There's no way people are going to be upset at this for too much right? it's a valid argument So far, YuGiOh Sevens has: Avoided the brainwashing and possession joke. I never had a problem with Romin's berserk mode because A) it was a power up that she had earned herself via training, B) she used it on her own and beat Arata, C) it was something they made clear she had to overcome, and D) for fictional sports series like YuGiOh, character development and wins need to be in sync to feel natural, which is something that plagued Aoi. If she had a rematch against Spectre and Ai, it definitely would've helped her character, but Romin started out as a novice compared to every other girl, and she's made strides to the show's tagline: create your own roads, and Romin's journey on that has been so strong so far. YuGiOh tends to give us cool girl secondary's to contrast. Mai was good, but a lot of her wins were from the anime only arcs and it did flesh out her character (she beat Pegasus and Joey to be fair), Sherry, but again offscreen duels, Anna and Kathy were engaging characters but only Anna had a win and that was in a tag duel, Serena ultimately had more wins than Yuzu, and Emma had character development but wasn't allowed a key win. Tiger fit exactly what Kari and Mai's role as a cool big sister that could mentor the other duelists and be a strong dueling rival, but she actually got a solid win to prove it. After all Mai lost to Joey, then Yugi after earning herself up, beat that dude who tried to force him to marry her, and then lost to Marik even though in a normal duel, she would've won. A lot of people are going to negatively compare this to other anime, but it's been a problem for YuGiOh as franchise. Like until Boruto, this was also a problem for Naruto for the longest time. If I were to compare the two, Naruto's problem were that the girl's development was only shown at the beginning and the end, and YuGiOh's problem is that between Alexis and Aoi, they had strong starts, but the writers never bothered to finish their storylines in a meaningful conclusion (aside from Akiza but still.) And for those that are suddenly asking why this is a problem, think about this from a writer's perspective. Why can't a bunch of men write a girl and give them a story, wins, and proper development like the other guys. Give the show a chance if you haven't. For all the #NotMyYuGiOh comparisons, this show does a lot of things right and plays with a lot of the tropes we've used to see, love, notice, and groan at in previous YuGiOh series.

Anything that doesn't involve going the same path Vrains did, I'll have faith on Sevens and Rush Duels.

Honestly, my first thought that Sevens was going to be another Zexal. (Not hating, just that it was something new that not everyone is going to like.) But after 41 episodes, I must say that it’s phenomenal. The characters are fun to watch, their quicks makes them relatable. I would say more but I don’t want to repeat what’s already been said. So I’m going to continue watching Sevens for the foreseeable future.

Sevens is indeed doing a great job with its treatment of girls in YGO. Let’s hope they keep it up without them suddenly going off the rails. There are actually four girls who dueled in VRAINS: Aoi, Emma, Baira, and QUEEN (granted queen only dueled once, in the 3rd arc, and lost)

Aki and Serena are my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! girls of all time but even then... I'd be surprised if _ROMIN_ specifically won't join those two as my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! Girls. See, despite how poorly the former two were treated in the end, the impact they left was still felt. And their designs are also top class. Say what you will about SEVENS and its style of narrative and artstyle... As someone who (again) has AKI and SERENA as their favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! girls of all time... Some of these new girls feel like they could soon be among those two as favorites. I just hope the studio doesn't pull a fast one and all of a sudden, they get treated just as bad as the ones before them. That would... Honestly be super disappointing. And I KNOW I'm not alone.

Now yes, leaving the joking and sarcastic comments. It feels strange to see a video where the female characters are spoken well since Yu-gi-oh is not characterized much by that. Now yes, about what SEVENS presented to us in the mass about female characters. Romin: The series makes it clear that she is a quite skilled guitarist and has her own rock group called RoaRomin (Romin is also a duelist, but makes it clear that he is not a hobby unlike Luke and Yuga: something like Tea). Romin also has aspirations and dreams that are alien to the things of the protagonist (Elements that we could see in Tea and Aki). Her Berserk mode is very similar to the unleashed power of Aki's Black Rose Witch (Interestingly, they both lose this battle mode later in the series). Asana: Yu-gi-oh's first female rival (I don't say so, her descriptions of the series in Japan say so). She is quite unique among all the rivals: while the other rivals have some problem with the protagonist, they are bitter and sometimes they are believed. Asana is quite friendly, she is not bitter, she gets along well with the protagonist and respects him too (For typical Yu-gi-oh rivals, there is Roa and Mr. Proveniencia). She is also one of the few antagonists who are not 100% bad (In fact, Asana is a good person who only stands against Yuga for saving her legacy) Tiger: It is one of the few cases of an independent, rude and aggressive girl in Yu-gi-oh (Similar comparisons would be Serena and Anna). She is described as a great duelist by Luke (A similar treatment to Asuka, but here only Luke believes that her sister is a great duelist because he never wins against her). She also she is one of the few people who has defeated Luke, the invincible, in a canonical way. Mimi: I think she is one of the few adults who actively participate in their respective series. She also she is one of the few female characters who achieved her goal in a short period of time. She is the closest you could get to brainwashing in SEVENS. However, so far, she is quite well and is independent of what President Drone says (I'm sure the only evil thing the Drone is doing with her is that it is taking her salary for being a terrible Goha president) Ranze: It's funny that she is present in the series from the beginning, but she only had development or greater participation in the third mini-arc of the series. Ranze's involvement is something Luna must have had during her series (Not to mention Ranze has more duels than Luna in just 41 episodes). I could talk about the other female characters, but I think those five are the most relevant when it comes to female representation in SEVENS.

Romin vs Sushiko round 2 Romin vs Roa (a duel that could go many directions and I good opportunity to advertise the new card they might use from the newest RD box) Romin vs Luke (in my opinion, she should be the one to give him his first onscreen loss) Luke vs Tiger Romin vs Princess G (that’ll nearing Sevens conclusion I think) Mimi vs Yoshio round 2 (a fight for son to save mother from Goha should something happen to Mimi) Ranze vs Gakuto or Rinnosuke round 2 (1 v 2 or individually) That’s all the ones I can think of right now. I want Nail to duel again but his account has been terminated so I’m not how that’s gonna work. What do you think? Anything else you can see happening with the girls?

Its almost 3am but I dropped everything to watch this video. Really loved your discussion and I do agree the girls in yugioh sevens are just way different from other Yugioh shows.

This feels like it was rushed too much. The video should of been out like after the show concluded. We get YGO doesn't have a track record of females (but still better than modern media girls) this feels like it made to make me wonder if Konami wants to fuck up YGO with the next season having bad girls because they lost the females.

So far it's really does seem like studio gallop was the problem , hopefully it stays that way and they can keep up this pace It's a shame, sky was so close to being one of my all-time favorite Yu-Gi-Oh characters, hopefully romin that's what her predecessor couldn't

Only caught up with sevens after stopping after the first hiatus recently but absolutely agree, romin is by far my favourite character in the show and the other girl characters are great too, only hope we don't change our minds by the end of the show

This is a tad depressing video to think about but it's totally true, even only by the fact that you have a lot more characters, and the default isn't male for any role,makes a huge change in how they are perceived. And as a bonus,sevens have the very slice of life,one ep for duel structure from gx which helps immensely giving more characters chances to show themselves and duel, let's hope they don't lose it. Note: Aki is still best girl,now even her tcg deck is finally complete!

I think what Sevens does best is that they know how to juggle their characters. Minor characters are introduced from time to time and have a reason to be there. Major characters all get their own screen time as well.

I know this video is old, but I may as well through my ranking for every primary Yu-Gi-Oh! girl Category: Best -> Worst Duelist: Romin, Aki, Anzu (while she went the whole series undefeated, she didn't duel enough to earn #1), Asuka, Yuzu, Aoi (I rank her low because she's playing Trickstar in a 4000 LP format, and doesn't win every time), and Kotori. Character (Design and Personality): Kotori, Anzu, Romin, Yuzu, Aoi (human), Aki, Blue Angel, Blue Maiden, Blue Girl, and Asuka (Personally, I like Saotome Rei a lot more than Asuka). My guess is that I am not in the majority, but here you go.

Series like Avatar the last airbender and Legend of Korra is a perfect example of how to write great female characters, haven't gotten to Yu-gi-oh Sevens yet but this sounds interesting even though it looks like the switch to different studio productions is working wonder's for their female characters i feel I can't completely give it the benefit of a doubt just because of Yu-gi-oh's track record of handling them throughout the series so I'd wait until the end of the series on an end note Aki will always be best girl to me 😁

Why do everyone forget sherry though? Sure she didn't have a 1v1 win but she was said to have done even better than Yusei in the WRGP qualification by taking down the entire team by herself, like, she defeated a team of three without taking a single damage. And she was a really good character, they could have done more with her but she was amazing

The girls of ygo Sevens really are a cut above the rest. Hope their treatment has made the studio and art transitions easier for people who were cold on this show.

The only girl besides Kakoko who needs to duel is Nico. Hope she gets a chance in the Rush duel tournament. So far, I really like every girl we got in SEVENS. They are all so different but likable and/or interesting. Heck, even Ranze who crushes so easily on guys (which usually annoys me) is great especially seeing what happened in the recent episode. I hope SEVENS won't disappoint in the end and still continues to give the girls development and time to shine.

If I remember camula and tonya in gx were the only wins who got wins in 1 v 1s. Akiza Carly got wins pre season 2. Mai did beat peagasus but can’t remember others. Rio beat like 3 people can’t remember their names though in zexal and we all know what happened in arc v and vrains. So yeah this series is great. Hopefully the next series they go back to main dueling but keep the formula. I keep getting surprised when yuga loses

While this may be your thoughts, I cannot fully agree with you. Sure, Tea and Tori (using English dubbed names here) don’t really duel and Mai did not really do great, turning on her friends for the Oricalchos, but you seem to forget about Rio Kastle when she became a Barian or even the female from ARC V that used Gem Knights. I feel like you glossed over some good matches, like Akiza dueling for her Turbo License. What mattered more, to me, was their own character growth outside of dueling. Akiza is still a great duelist and has made massive character growth when she was shown the true light of the Arcadia Movement, Yuzu is awesome because of how much she mattered in the later plot and on how crucially important she is to Yuya’s life (they truly love each other). Also, if you think about it, Carly us still a major supporter for Jack even if she isn’t a diehard duelist. Her deck couldn’t really be called a “deck” back then because it was more used as fortune telling. Becoming a Dark Signer was not that great a change. VRAINS and GX are kind of lackluster when it comes to the girls, mostly for VRAINS’ sake because I could not stand the characters, story or Link focused gameplay. With all the “kid friendlier” rules in Rush Duels, anyone could win. And their cards look like jokes compared to the main OCG.

During Zexal, during Arc-V, during VRAINS, I always thought that the easiest way to make a new Yu-Gi-Oh series financially successful is by making the female characters play more active roles in the plot. My main issue with this franchise has always been its treatment of female characters. I've been a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh since the English dub of DM was still releasing new episodes for Duelist Kingdom and the rest of DM afterward. I love the franchise as a whole and will always love it regardless of each show's individual flaws. However, I believe Studio Bridge is familiar with the history of female characters in Yu-Gi-Oh. While I have no issue with female duelists losing or the occasional female character that is a damsel-in-distress, variety in both male and female characters is important. Not every female duelist should be there to give a male character another win. Now, here's the challenge. Can they keep it up until the series concludes? And, if they do that, can they keep it up for any future series in the franchise that they're in charge of? I'm hesitant to believe the curse has really been broken after less than 50 episodes into the series. Writing good female characters is nothing worth praising either, but I do admit I love how well Sevens has been treating their female characters at the time of this video being posted. I truly hope this video doesn't age badly. I wonder how many Yu- names are left. Obviously, writers can just make up names, but at what point would the YGO franchise arrive at the scenario of it being far easier to select a female Yu- name for the new main character and introduce a female YGO protagonist? It's food for thought only in my imagination. They still have to break the curse and keep it broken first and I don't necessarily disagree with the decision to keep the protagonist male for each series.
