a better theory that i made up myself is that its cos he was meant to be written as a ronin(also why he was a ronin in wano). When oda made zoro he was probably thinking of a wandering samurai who doesnt obey a feudal lord and hes not staying in a single place. In the first place, he joined the crew in order to improve his swordsmanship along the way which is what he did. Ryuma was the same, in fact zoro was probably inspired by ryuma in that one chapter oda wrote before one piece who never really had a destination, he was just a wondering ronin who was just traveling wherever. So without a destination, it only makes sense that a ronin would be bad at directions.

the real reason is because of his sword wado ichimonji which means ‘straight line of harmony’. zoro has this characteristic of his sword since in one piece, it’s stated that great swordsmen create a connection between their swords and themselves, and wado ichimonji is the one he has had the longest

Zoro "loses his way" both physically and figuratively. He only knows the way of the sword which is battle. He trains with monkeys when Mihawk doesn't let him drink. Making him literally fight the monkeys on his back. Like oversleeping and drinking. He can't follow anyone because it has to be his way. It's probably the most nonchalant and comical way to just let "one piece on the chessboard have its own rules". Oda is truly a genius

Zoros actually strong enough to casually survive most anime. I’d like to imagine he regularly enters other animes, defeats baddies, then walks out said universe with knowledge. It would explain how he’s so strong despite only being human. You cannot convince me Zoro hasn’t ATLEAST ONCE been in the hyperbolic time chamber with the amount of weight he’s lifting. I wish we could get a reference like this in rezero,Vinland saga,jujutsu kaisen,demon slayer, full metal alchemist, Naruto etc. Then next they fight he pulls out a super move no one recognizes. When asked he’ll say “I learned it from a petite blonde with a metal arm 😈”
