Hey Dave! Lol, you're such a card! If you are serious about a beauty and skin care channel, hey, why not? You have good skin. Do you have hats for styling or other tips to share? I really like that hoya sp. bogor, kind of reminds me of my hoya India. Yes, the way we rear children, raise pets and grow plants there is no one way. Between 2020 to 2022 there were so many newbies who pretended to be experts during Covid and I tried it all until I came to my own conclusions and concoction. Let me tellya, I was dancing today by myself- salsa, afro pop, and chutney soca ( Indo Caribbean music from Trinidad west indies) and didn't care who saw me ! I need to release stress and loosen my joints after dealing with the high supermarket prices, lol, and having to deal with long covid, loosen my mind. Be careful of getting into orchids, they can be quite addictive! As for recommendation, _Dendrobium nobile_ is a very popular species. You can find a lot of care info here on KZfaq. _Phalaenopsis schilleriana_ is a good one, kind of a more interesting alternative to the regular complex hybrid phalaenopsis. Also paphiopedilums and phragmipediums especially cool growing ones which a lot of them are.

Once I was able to grow store bought phalaenopsis, I bought a true phalaenopsis from Borneo name phalaenopsis Belina. The blooms are nothing like the store bought, and it has a great smell. I have mottled leafed phalaenopsis and then I moved to jewel orchids which you grow more for the foliage than the blooms. I also have several catleyas and oncidiums. On the oncidiums, I have more twinkles, that are miniature oncidium orchids. Most of my hoyas are fragrant and the blooms come in such a wide variety of colors and sizes of blooms. You will enjoy the orchid growing journey. I want to try growing a hoya from seed. I'm intimated by it for some reason. Do you have any cuttings of Jennifer available??? You and your wife have a beautiful Iowa evening.

There are so many types of medium out there and so many recipes! I still have a compiled list with like 3-4 recipes (from the “all knowing” internet) for each type of plant, but I hardly use it anymore. If a plant needs water twice a week, then it needs a bigger pot or more moisture retentive ingredients. If it doesn’t need a drink after 2 weeks, then it needs less moisture retentive ingredients, for me it is now as simple as that. As you say: 3 ingredients are enough! (Still slowly mixing away the rest of the stash though 😂) And for new plants I’ve become even lazier recently…. Propagating everything in moss-perlite mix and then sticking it into pure tree fern fibre. So far only a piper didnt appreciate that, the pipers now go into pon for me. And if I have to water more often than I want to… that plants goes over into a 3 ingredient mix I don’t like propagating in tree fern though, so far it had a much lower success rate than moss-perlite mix for me. I don’t think tree fern is “better” than a good soil mix. But it for sure is easier. While expensive, it doesn’t really need amendments (mixing it with things like cocochips/cocohusk, perlite, bark would make its use cheaper) and when it gets dry-ish the colour becomes lighter, so when checking on the plants it is easy to see which ones needs water. This is good for plant parents who check on their plants often and tend to be on the over watering side like me 😂 It has a property that is nice for underwatering plant parents too…. It doesn’t get hydrophobic. So for someone who underwaters it would be great to put into a regular mix, to rehydrate the hydrophobic substrate quicker/easier. (If not for underwatering it would be a waste to mix it into a soil/peat/etc based mixture) Still on the same repots here, though I did half of my friends repots in between so its ok to be behind on schedule 😊 (KZfaq rarely shows community posts for me) Im glad you have things that still make your day while suffering the effects of long Covid. Losing the ability to do the things you love and enjoy can be devastating. But then sometimes when we find something that we can still do, it brings all the more joy! Do you have a plant limit? I mean like a certain amount that you can manage to take care of If we would all worry about how others would judge us for being stupid, the world would be stiff and/or fake. As for strong opinions………… If they make sense……. 👍 I mean.. the nonsense opinions out there are strong, so they need something to counter that 😂 Looking forward to your experiment with all those different substrates! 😊 And to your styling vid and whatever other planty video you post, though I’m sure you could make the skin care successful (maybe even together with your wife?) Will leave it at that, this comment already got waaaaaaay too long 🫢

What is your opinion on long vines that grow bare? Do you cut them back in hopes to stimulate new productive growth? Or do you just let them keep growing?
@soberplantguy
@soberplantguy 27 күн бұрын
I take this plant-by-plant. I have an AH074 with very long vines that have no leaves because it's hanging--but, the inner-nodal spacing is tight, and it wants to produce. I'll trellis it. If I have a vine that has scarred over nodes, are huge spacing between them, I'll cut it, stand back, and watch it push out new growth. I have never once regretted doing it, either. Quick pro tip: do not give up on that pest treatment when you see new growth start to explode. It's a trick!!! 🤣 Flat mites have a very, very long life cycle, and eggs will hatch way on down the road. Be vigilant. Yes, I have killed a cumingiana, but am growing the other one really well. If I do say so myself 🤭

Hi Dave 👋 when you water your plants, do you first water with tap water to moisten the roots, or do you water the plants right away with fertilizer water? Edit to add... I love your directness! You're not mean but you speak your mind! It's a great quality in a human IMHO 👌 ❤🌿

Hi! Your Merrilli looks beautiful. I like your substrate recipe. How long have you been collecting hoya? I used to think hoya needed to dry out but no longer. They're thirsty plants

I got really earnest about it a couple of years ago. And agreed, drying most Hoya all the way out at best leads to slow growth, at worst, well.....

I have two dozen Hoya and I didn’t have problems until recently with flatmites on my Hoya. It appears that a Hoya from Lowes or Home Depot had some and I keep my plants apart and those buggers have spread to almost all my other Hoyas. . I use systemic granulars and spray them weekly and cannot get rid of them. They pop up on the new growth chomping the leaves. I had removed damaged leaves as soon as I saw them. I have tried sulfur, jacks dead bug brew and now I have to clean all the sulfur off before I can order beneficials. Do you have this problem and what do you do?
@soberplantguy
@soberplantguy 27 күн бұрын
Because of how those things munch, the systemics won't help (which is how they got the rep for being super bugs). I use my DIY spray, from the video I shot. But you must be vigilant because they have an incredibly long life cycle. I think most people feel their in the clear when new growth starts, but it's just a break in between outbreaks. Sucks, and I'm sorry.

One more question- Do you buffer your coco coir/husk? Or do you use it straight out of the bag? I hear about people buffering it to prevent nutrient lockout but don't really know how to do this or if it's even necessary
@soberplantguy
@soberplantguy 20 күн бұрын
In theory, these products are ready out of the bag. And I've had no long-term ill effects. But this is a timely question as I just bought some granular cal-mag for a a couple of plants. Same species Hoya that just look sickly. Since I like playing in substrate, I am going to buffer it starting with the new batch I just made, and water through the others. The products I use have been rinsed and are PH neutral, so you don't need to go through the rinse process, just hydrate. You can soak the coco in the cal-mag solution, and drain it. Or you can put the mix in a container with holes in the bottom and fill it it with the solution and let it drain out slowly. That, of course, is if you choose to do it at all. Cheers ☺

So how do I get to buy a plant from you? Hoyas are so addictive and I already have quite a few, but each time I see you introduce a new one, I have to have it. You're getting me in trouble with my son who insists I have way too many already. I thought I was buying a Jennifer but it turned out to be Joy x Jennifer. I'm kind of worried about it as the stems are all woody. Please save me a Jennifer when they are ready.
