Wicca Self-Initiation Course: spells8.com/courses/wicca-sel...
This video is Lesson 1 of Day 2 in the introductory course to Wicca. This set of video lessons will guide you through the fundamentals of Wicca in theory and practice.
A short video to understanding the Wheel of the Year in the neo pagan traditions, its origin, history, festivals and how to celebrate them. Wiccans and other pagan/heathen circles such as Celtic religions, Druidism, Dianic, Anglo-Saxon or Secular, track the change of seasons using the Wheel of the Year.
Natural processes are seen as a continuous cycle. The passage of time is also seen as cyclic and it is represented by a wheel or a circle. Birth, decline and death, as experienced in human life, is repeated as the seasons progress. The change of the seasons is traditionally celebrated in the form of holidays called Sabbats.
The history of the wheel of the year is long as it can be traced back to early agricultural practices. The solar cycle was broken into eight periods, which Wiccans today celebrate under the name of Sabbats. In order from beginning to end of the year, they are:
- Halloween/Samhain (October 31)
- Yule (December 21)
- Candlemas/Imbolc (February 2)
- Ostara/Spring Equinox (March 21)
- May Eve/Beltane (April 30)
- Litha/Summer Solstice (June 21)
- Lammas/Lughnasadh (August 1)
- Mabon/Autumn Equinox (September 21)

New to walking the wiccan path, I've been asked to research the 8 sabbats and learn about basic coven structure. Then return with what Ive learned.. Im reading "A Witches Bible" by Janet & Stewart Farrah and "Bucklands Big Blue Book" and finding parts of it a bit confusing and a lot rather fascinating.. Your video has helped me a great deal especially with the pronunciation of the sabbat names and where and when they fall on the wheel..

Stop. Right now. Get that mindset out of your brain. I stopped my progression on my path because my parents told me it was evil when I was 15. Our home was filled with pagan symbolism. We're proud Irish and German...but my mom is a devout Catholic. I'm 34 years old and am JUST getting past this idea that what I do could possibly disappoint somebody else that I love and respect. But that's not right. If they love and respect me, they will value my views and not push theirs into me. I'm not in danger and I'm not hurting anybody or doing anything illegal or wrong. I've lost 20 years of education, personal growth and spiritual progression because for decades I have put my parents and societies values ahead of my own. From someone who's been there, done that...I urge you to stop allowing yourself to be held back solely based on what you think others will say or think. Start listening to your heart and valuing your opinions and viewpoints. They are valid and yours to have. Own them. How do you learn and grow as a person if you're scared and worried about learning and trying new things? End the archaic church views and embrace botony, astronomy, quantum physics, cooking, gardening, animism, medical science, herbology, philosophy, history, etc. It's all encompassing and encourages you to learn about the universe as opposed to just under rationalising things with the justification of 'God and God's will'.

I live in South Africa, and our December is summer... So how do I go about celebrating Yule? In fact, for me, everything is backwards. March is autumn this side instead of spring, and September is spring here instead of autumn... So how would I celebrate these holidays?
@Spells8

Every season has its own energy. When you work in harmony with that energy, you increase the power of your ritual. If you live in the Soutern Hemisphere (Australia, South Africa, etc) the Wheel of the Year is reversed so that it works in accord with your natural seasons. Samhain: May 1. Yule: June 21. Imbolc: Aug 1. Ostara: Sep 21. Beltane: Oct 31. Litha: Dec 21. Lammas: Feb 2. Mabon: Mar 21 Find a table of correspondences with each sabbat here: aussiewytch.wordpress.com/sabbats/

A lot of this religion is about following your own path and going with your own personal instincts. I.e.: whatever feels natural and common sense to you in your environment. If you feel green is a colour of love and that purple represents healing, use them for those purposes. Just because you read tables of correspondences stating that green represents money, does not make it so. Your intent is the most important tool you have. What you sow is what you reap.

In my opinion, Wicca is based on ancient traditions of the northern hemisphere. It dosent make sense to follow this version in the Southern Hemisphere. The Southern Hemisphere should make its own neopaganism based on various Southern Hemisphere folk traditions .

Beltane is 8 months before Yule, so wouldn’t the Goddess become pregnant on Ostara?
@Spells8
@Spells8 5 жыл бұрын
There is no right or wrong answer since people have different views and interpretations about this constant cycle. Ostara is traditionally the time when The Maiden celebrates her fertility and is ready to become The Mother. This happens in Beltane, when the sacred union (or consummation) occurs. If you're asking why it's 8 months and not 9 months (as in human pregnancy), the Wheel of the Year is not really about human beings but about Earth itself, which has its own timings.
@techaushguy786
@techaushguy786 5 жыл бұрын
Spells8 I did some more research, and I believe you’re correct. Raven Grimassi’s Encyclopedia Of Wicca and Witchcraft puts the Goddess becoming pregnant at Beltane as well. Plus Beltane is actually 8 months 3 weeks before Yule, which makes it easier to see the spring Sabbats as a celebration of fertility and Beltane as the Sun God’s peak, and where he insures his eventual rebirth. Thank you!!

Do we have to be pagan to celebrate these?
@mollyziebell4791
@mollyziebell4791 4 жыл бұрын
From what I know, as I'm rather new but have been working with a coven, no. Many, like Yule Ostara and Samhain are already worked into the calendar through the Abrahamic religions. As well, many pagan and wiccan practitioners are open to celebrating with anyone who wants to celebrate with us. My coven for sure, if you are open to our practices and customs and even just want to learn we are more than happy to work with people, even if they aren't a part. That being said, its a respect thing too though. I also do not speak for all of us for sure, I only speak for my own coven, but its always been a very welcoming group of people for me personally. I hope that helps. It's a rather long winded answer isn't it haha.

Why is autumn the beginning of the new year and not spring?
@Spells8
@Spells8 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Back in the day, before there were clocks, there was no concept of midnight (when one day ends and another begins). So it was considered that the day ended at sunset. Because of this, the night was considered part of the next day, in other words, the day also started at sunset. This carried into yearly calendars so traditionally it's considered that the year starts with the dark half, making winter (the sunset of the year) the first season.
@umwha
@umwha Жыл бұрын
@@Spells8 I doubt that all ancient European cultures considered time that way. They did split the year into the waxing and waning year. Surely some would consider the beginning to be the start of the Waxing.

I am mind fucked. We worshipped the sun. The wheel of the year is time in a wheel representing the sun. Sun cross. Celtic cross. Look at the Scottish saltire flag. It’s not st. Andrew. It’s the sun. The UK flag IS the wheel of the year. Look at the butterfly cross in orkney, look at the chalk drums in Yorkshire. Look at the inside architecture of Newgrange in Ireland it’s a cross inside of a circle!! The Roman Empire worshipped sol invictus. That’s the “unconquerable sun.” The only time it’s conquered is when there is a solar eclipse. Rome sacrificed Jesus under a solar eclipse!!! It’s called “crucifixion darkness” in the bible. So Rome took the cross which is one of the oldest symbols in the world and put a man on it at the only time the sun gets conquered, Jesus becomes the “sun of god.” So polytheism is wiped out, and our nature is taken away from us, our attention shifts to a cross on the wall and the power of man. Think about what Judaism is, it was distinctive in being monotheistic. Rome goes there and tried to make Europe monotheistic after! when there is only one god, religion becomes power, political power! This is how Rome got its power, and it has shaped the past 2000 years.
