Great video as always. To give a little more info, the high price of the unit is the result of the diode being harvested from early, costly, blu-ray DVD players. Wicked would have had to buy one of these in working order, disassemble it, extract the diode, then built it into the host. I was going to say that the low power is a result of the low power DVD player diode being overdriven, resulting in high wear, but another viewer mentioned that the output is pulsed at 20mw. If so, that is extremely deceptive marketing.

The first 405nm Laser was built by a member of the LaserPointerForums....Not WL. Wicked Lasers was well known to exaggerate their power claims and their "First" claims.

are you sure about that? I thought I remember WL offering the Sonar about a year before an LPF member got a hold of a 405nm diode. I could be wrong though. PS good video XM360!

styropyro/XM360... I think you are correct styropyro. Did some deeper digging and found that the PHR-803 was harvested back in 2007 by Sam and friend Leslie Wright when it was added to Sam's FAQ. Then in 2008 IIRC Dr Lava built the 1st LPF 405nm Laser. I could still be wrong about Dr Lava. Couldn't dig deep enough since the LPF Format changed way back. WL Sonar was released back in 2006.

I used to have one of these. I measured its power output at 2.413816mW. The Sonar isn't a CW laser; it has a duty cycle of 0.1667 (approx. 17%).

You should try hardwire and then make it brighter. That's what I did my lasers.

Its a pulsed laser..though its still a collectable piece for some collectors. I cant recall the duty cycle, but you can easily measure it with a scope and do the math, but on an averaging hobbyist LPM.. you gonna get a fraction of the rated output, didn't Wicked laser emphasized it was a pulsed laser back when they sold it, when you check it on the WB machine.? Quite critical info for a pointer, where the pulsed aspect makes little sense..unless they think it will long the lifetime, but it certainly also limits the output, so pushing 20mW as its rating hence private consumers is a stretch, as they simply won't get the output effect they think they will, in regards to its rating... but it still works and it does look like it seen some heavy use, so pulsed lazing for the win..

Hey, Have a question. Which company is better for 1W green laser? Sanwu or wicked? I want to buy a green laser. I already have red guadian red 800mW and Striker 7W.. Your laser reviews have good informations..

I'd say Sanwu, as you'll get more stability and power from their direct diode greens as opposed to Wicked's DPSS Krypton

Your unexpectedly low LPM measurements are caused in large part by the pulsed operation of this laser; it is not CW like the vast majority of directly-injected violet lasers that you can obtain now. The Sonar's duty cycle is 0.1667. Try this: Irradiate the sensor of your LPM with the Sonar for 60 seconds (1 minute). Multiply the maximum reading 10. Multiply this by 0.1667 (the laser's duty cycle) to obtain the final reading.

That is a little deceptive to market a pulsed laser at 20mw and give no mention of pulsed operation on the product page. I guess wicked lasers has always been exaggerating power claims.

Damn I have a cheap eBay laser that I paid $15 for that is wayyyy brighter than that. It will heat up your skin from like 10 feet away.

Anything above 5mw is illegal to own with a federal liscence

It's legal to own a laser of any power in the US, but it's illegal to ship from countries, so people make it a 5 mw spec.

I don't want to be a smartass but as someone who dabbles in UV and full spectrum photography, I have to say this because it triggers me way to much. This laser is not purple, it's violet. Violet is a color we perceive when we see wavelengths shorter than blue. Purple is what we see when we see a combination of blue and red wavelengths. Aesthetically, there is little difference between the two (colors are confusing, I know). But given that this laser is not some technological marvel of a laser that would have two output peaks, this is violet.

Oh wow, are you sure? I was told that they're the same thing. I was also told that "violet" is mainly the word used instead of purple.
