I agree! I think its moreso a marketing thing. Mean Girls 🎶 flopped hard because it wasnt marketed as a musical. Tho Wonka somehow survived not being marketed as a musical. Which is a practice done in hollywood to "get as many butts in seats as possible to increase box office" and that practice has generally backfired. As for Wicked, youll still have non theatre/broadway people not know its a musical and just think its an "Oz" movie. I had a friend who commented that he didnt know about the "hollywood not marketing musicals as musicals" till he saw the first Wicked teaser. So thats not great for marketing. However i think Wicked has a much bigger fan base than those previous musical movies so itll be a hit no matter what haha. Just an odd marketing choice is all lol.
