This should have a million views. Thank you. In the last several months I've gone from spray cans, tape and stencils ( did plenty of rc car bodies that way) to a real airbrush, createx paints, liquid mask, and a lot more freehand strokes. And I keep learning more every day

Hey Mark! I actually created this video months ago and planned to use it for another purpose originally. So, I apologize if some of it didn't quite make sense or was harder to follow than my usual content. Part 2 will be the next upload.

You can use a shield on the base layer while maintaining decent dissipation. Just pull the shield off the surface an inch or two. That lets the paint blow around the edge, giving a softer line. But it still gives you a bit of structure from the line of the shield. Great video. I've always wanted to try this. Your tips really helped me sort it out in my head.
@wickedartstudio
@wickedartstudio Жыл бұрын
Very true. I try to avoid shield use more when teaching because it becomes very easy for the artist to continue using the same shape over and over. I agree a soft edge is easy to obtain by holding the shield away from the surface though. I also appreciate the kind words!

Yeah Trevor, True Fire Flames are a real trick to get right, without studying really good fire photos, the size and shape of the item being painted (like a car body or non flat surfaces) and lots of practice. But remembering fire is just burning gasses, effected by it's own heat, turbulence, airflow around it, is something I think a lot of us new airbrush fire painters forget. I also think using the House of Kolors True Fire Flame paint kit ( everything you need ), would make it easier to learn with. Colors are already figured out, plus Mike Lavallee made a how to video, on reducing it and doing flames with it. After you get licks, fades, shields and soft edges figured out, then go try water based paints. I think fighting the water base paint mixing / reducing, tip dry, Plus trying to get the flame shapes, colors, fades correct, along with hand control and shields, all rolled in one, makes things harder, especially for beginners . It's just too much to get right at one time. Plus there is no shelve life limit with House of Kolors, like the water base paints have. Just mix up HOC and use as you need it for months on end, til it runs out, as long as you keep it in an air tight bottle. Mikes True Fire video, in English, not in whatever language the title is in.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aq1mast_xJ6skok.html

Hey Mike! Unfortunately, many airbrush artists are airbrushing in their residence, not a garage, they're working inside their living quarters. So, using solvent-based paint is not a good option. I would also recommend sticking with the product one intends to use, whether that be solvent-based or water-based paint. Both have pros and cons, but they are totally different animals. Switching from one to the other can lead to frustration. I agree there is a proven process Lavalle worked out using House of Kolor products that works; however, that was early in the "true fire" portion of his life and career. If you look at what he created during that time frame and compare it to what he was doing toward the unfortunate end of his life, the results are very different. His choice of colors and even some of his techniques changed and evolved with time. That is something I recommend to all artists. Every artist should constantly be reevaluating their work, trying different things and continuing to improve. As I mentioned in the video, the process, colors and techniques I use have changed over the years as well. That's true for a variety of things, not just recreating fire. All paint has a shelf life. The shelf life varies, but none of it lasts forever. Paint will last longer if it's stored properly, but it will eventually fail with time. I have personally had House of Kolor products fail after being stored for long periods of time. Adding reducer to any paint decreases longevity too. I don't recommend storing reduced paint for extended periods (solvent based, or water based). I have bottles of Auto Air Colors that are more than fifteen years old that are still usable. I have also seen some of those old water-based paints fail over the years. Even with proper storage, nothing lasts forever.

@@wickedartstudio So true on everything you said, I forget most other people don't paint inside the house like I do. But when I said the HOK paint lasted for a long time, I was talking a month or three for a small kit of 16 oz bottles, not a gallon premixed sitting on a shelve for a year or two, but I do get your points on everything. Thanks for the info and reminders.

@@thomasduchene9415 Well, you might be in luck my friend... but then again, you might not... we'll have to wait and see, 🤣. I had an idea within the last two days for a completely different approach when teaching others how to do this technique, at least it's completely different compared to what I've taught in the past and I've never seen anyone else use the same approach. I don't know if it's good or not at this point because I've yet to teach it live (my KZfaq viewers will literally be the first to see it) and I'm not completely happy with what I did in the end, but I don't have time to change it and still have an upload for tomorrow. I think it has potential and could use some refinement, but I'll be very interested to see what viewers like you think.

I noticed on the mailbox, since I draw and practice fire for lots of pen and ink drawings that the artist did a geometric pattern with semi circles which a lot of drawing artists think of as a no go.

You have no idea how long I been waitin for a video like this lol I’ve asked several people to do somethin like this numerous times and never nothin, you hit the nail on the head for the kind of video I was wanting. Its like yea it’s good to paint it and talk some things and what not, but for folks like me, I over think and want to understand why is this this way or why that way lol jus a detail breakdown of it, not jus paint and talk in 10 mins, but explaining it. Great job buddy forreal. And yes I have been airbrushin lil over 2 yrs and I have been OBSESSED with true fire and gettin like I want it. Most people would be satisfied with my fire, even have a lot ask me how I do mine and honest answer is I have no idea. Lol I got a standard and it’s high lol Do you do live classes?

The reason we struggle when making fire is because it is consistent and our minds need consistency. I use plaster to create an interior wall finish and when describing it too to home owners I would use two words, inconsistently consistent. When creating the design of the finish I would leave it to chance to create a look that is appealing. I would never know what the wall design was going to look like as I was creating it only because you would not know what it looked like until it dried 2 days later.

Hi Kirk! That's a great explanation and I'm totally going to steal "inconsistently consistent" in the future! Thanks for sharing!
