Last year we had an idea for an EPIC DIY Halloween prop….a gateway to the underworld! We spent all year thinking of how to make this insanely awesome halloween prop and we finally did it! The Dark Portal is a classic element from the Warcraft universe and we used that as part of our inspiration for this halloween prop. There are also some other video game elements in this build…the runic carvings aren't from Warcraft, but another epic game that we love. Can you figure out what they say? 💀
How does the Dark Portal work?
It's built entirely from XPS foam and paint, with LEDs on the inside to make the runes glow. We used a semi-transparent material on the back and then did a rear projection of a hellish VFX scene, etc. to create the interior of the portal. During the day, the fabric is taken down and then at night we project the hellscape.
We've made a lot of awesome DIY Halloween Props but this one is on another level, it's absolutely EPIC. It's a great addition to our Halloween Yard Haunt, and we're SUPER excited for the kids trick-or-treating in the neighborhood to check it out! There's also the added benefit of being able to travel to other dimensions and worlds from our front yard. That's pretty good too.

I'm a light technician, I do concert shows. One free tip for you.... Use Kitchen Wax Paper as a diffuser, it can hold some heat without creating a fire hazard. Also, use Polyisocyanurate Foam Board Insulation, you can get it in Lowe's with one side with a aluminum layer, that will hold heat and will help for reflection or if you use pink foam, glue a aluminum foil layer inside.
@kimnobles7687

Hey, I work with pink foam and LEDs all the time, but nowhere near this scale. Do the LEDs really give off enough heat that the aluminum is necessary?
@My_daddy

@HighPoweExpress

Depending how strong power are the leds. Is not about is necessary, its just a recommendation, you can work with what you have. Aluminum foil its cheap, why not? The leds I do use are mounted in a heat sink and needs a fan for cooling. The leds on a tape for decoration you can touch it with your finger, almost no heat. The aluminum is not only for heat, also everytime you work with current, you have the potential to create a spark and then a fire. And the aluminum are good for reflect the light like a mirror does, making it more bright efficient, like a flashlight.

Parchment paper is even more heat resistant, and a little more defuse than wax paper. I’ve used it for photography diffuser. May not be as water resistant though; tends to get more transparent when wet

I realize this video is a couple of years old so this might have been mentioned. I used to build very elaborate haunted houses and projections were common. A give away to that effect is you can see the beam from the projector, especially if mist or fog is used. I solved this problem by shooting the projector through neutral density filters for video or stage lights. Window tinting will work too. Some times we had to adjust the brightness on the projector to balance the effect with the filters, but it worked great. People would see the image but could not see the source. This portal is awesome. You guys did a excellent job with it.

Green screen cover separate panels maybe out of cardbooard perhaps refrigerator boxes inside and put several together so you can walk thru them so you go thru them. Add the video then of the walk thru. Still be able to post the effect. Add a wave warp as your hand disappears as in stargate. Then whole body disappears thru. Then a wide shot of portal with an edit as your right leg is shown only going thru. Love the portal. Looks so real.

Just like dorthy did in the wizard of oz when she first seen munchkin land. They had judy garland in a gray and white dress and the room was in black and white. All practical effects. Really great effect for 1939.

When I made my HUGE Tomb Stones over 12 yrs. ago... and they are STILL In good shape... I used some old paneling pieces and glued the paneling to the backs of the Tomb Stones with Heavy Duty Construction Glue and then screwed them to the 2" Pink construction foam. Then I mounted the Tomb Stones into stair-stepped wood bases made from plywood for the bottom and the 2X4 boards and stair-stepped them to make them look AND FEEL Solid! And it worked VERY Nicely! :D

ALSO... FYI... If you spray the Pink Foam with Various shades of Grey Primer... it will PIT the foam making it look like Stone! THEN On top of that you can use a "Stone Texture" Spray over THAT... If you have cracks and/or lettering... spray them in BLACK PRIMER FIRST as I did with my Pink Foam Tomb Stones. The Primer ALSO Protects the foam from the elements VERY NICELY! :D I THEN Dry Brushed WHITE Latex Primer on corners and raised areas, then brushed Glow-in-the-Dark Paint on TOP of the white Highlights! Once Ultra-Violet/Black Light lighting hits the Glow-in-the-Dark paint and it INSTANTLY GLOWS! If you KEEP the light on it.... it REALLY GLOWS AMAZINGLY!!!

I'm 56. I've been into "HALLOWEEN" and Horror Movies, Costumes, Masks, Props etc. my entire life! I've done ALOT of "DIY" Stuff over the years! I started with a book called "Movie Monsters" by Alan Ormsby when I was like 9 yrs. old. The book teaches kids how to make themselves up as different Universal Horror Movie Monsters. My FIRST "WereWolf" was a cheap brown rubber mask from the back of a comic book, and REAL "Hair" taken from our two black dogs. I read ALOT about the Brilliance of The Late Great "Jack Pierce" and how HE Did Lon Chaney Jr. as "The Wolf Man" and so LIKE Jack... I literally applied the hairs in bunches of strands and built it up on the mask layer by layer. It took an Entire weekend, from Friday Night to Sunday Night to apply it all! I also used various acrylic paints in flat tones to paint the rubber mask BEFORE applying the hair. This gave ALOT of Depth to the entire look! So yea... I LOVE this stuff! Years ago I found a guy on the internet that calls himself "The Mad Scientist" that showed how to do ALL KINDS of "DIY HALLOWEEN PROPS" INCLUDING Some AWESOME Corps Tutorials! IF You can still find it on-line he is AMAZING! He basicly used Foam or Plastic Skulls for the base and a Wood Dowel and Foam from fabric stores for the chest, muscles and filling out the body. I modified his method and used skeleton arms and hands to make it more realistic. He used old T-Shirts soaked in brown and grey mixed latex paint for the "Skin" of the Corpses. But Again I modified the method using Thinner cotton cloth and later tissue paper, soaked in the same latex paint. What makes using CLOTH nice is that once it dries over the skull and hands and arms... you just cut away what you don't want or need like the eye sockets, mouth, nose areas and on the hands and arms. I left pieces "Hanging" to give them realizm and make them look more grose! I also used Fake "Ping Pong Ball" eyes from the Halloween Store to make the eyes look more real... but I dusted them with quick shots of off white primer then sprayed a satin gloss over them to make them look Aged and faded but still... "Juicy"! :D I also used Hot Glue dripping from their mouths and noses and eyes and what not to give that "STILL ALIVE" kind of look! I used Glow in the Dark Green paint under the eyes and on and behind the hot glue "Drippings" to also give it a VERY Nice effect! Sort of like maybe Toxic Waste is what re-animated them! Using old cloths from Good Will I then aged and distressed them but dressed them proper! I even split the backs of their Jackets like they do in Funeral Homes for "Realism"! LOL I even added thinning "Hair" to their heads layer by layer so they looked "REAL"! Later I animated one of them used an Old Rotating Fan as the "moving base" and mounted the corpse to it. When people/kids walked NEAR it... Motion detecters from the hardware store made it "MOVE" and BOY did IT SCARE the CRAP Out of more then a FEW people! MYSELF INCLUDED Because I had Forgotten they were ON! LOL :D

This is awesome I just found your guys' channel . Spray paint also works well to make insulation foam look like stone. The solvents that make it sprayable dissolve the outer foam and leave behind a hardened textured surface that's also primed for painting.

@@WickedMakers a round over bit on the edges and a v bit to make the "bend" in the cover really sells it! We glue foam to itself or to other things with 3M contact adhesive (we call it green glue cause we buy the green stuff to make sure we have full coverage). It's great- you paint both sides, wait for it to try, and then have ONE SHOT to stick it together, but once it's together, it's going nowhere.

I made it and it looked super cool and I am going to upload a video of it soon. I added fake moss which woked really well and is something you should try. I also noticed something after watching the video many times while building it. For about 1/8 of a second when the first clip starts to fade out the portal effect disappears. Did you edit the footage to show the portal effect in daylight? That would explain why it was so bright. It makes sense why you would do that because you cannot really see all off the detail of the stone at night and editing it would really help make a good opening for the video.

Love your channel and the effort you put into making Halloween incredible. But, I would love to see a summary at the end of the data of your builds. Things like Total Hours Spent on Project, Total Cost of Project, Space Needed to Store Project and Alternatives to Shown Techniques (like using a dense ball of aluminum foil to roll across foam to give a texture instead of a heat gun) would be great additions to your videos. Any, love the content and I'll certainly keep watching.

Hot wire cutters work on pink stuff very well too. Mod Podge mixed w paint will seal the foam to water proof. The wash works well with paint, water, and a little dishwashing soap.

This looks really elaborate but is surprisingly simple at its core. I also appreciate you could have your projector sitting in your home window to prevent thieves. And since all the power you need would be for LEDs that don’t take much you could easily install some covert solar panels.

Love the paint technique on this and the tombstones. I made tombstones out of foam several years ago and after applying the gray base coat, I put watered down black paint into a spray bottle to add the dark accent coat. It worked well. Just a thought for a way to speed up the accent coat process.

AWESOME! I LOVE working with the pink foam insulation. So far I haven't made anything 1:1 scale but I have built a lot of 1/6th scale structures with it. I have plans to do something like this but a whole room that looks like the inside of a pyramid, tomb castle etc. Just need my own house do do it in.
