Wide and Abstract / Catalyst Wedge Alcohol Ink Art \ Step By Step

I took a very long piece of paper and built a wide, abstract alcohol ink painting. You'll be able to see the process I used as this is a step by step painting tutorial for you. I really started out with some harder edges and then softened the whole painting later in the process. On that note, here's some of the timecodes you can use to see the different parts of this alcohol ink abstract painting!
00:00 - Ink drop
1:30 - Using the Catalyst Wedge with my paint
2:30 - Heating to dry the alcohol inks
3:40 - Adding more alcohol to get it moving
4:30 - It looks like a fantasy abstract art piece
4:45 - Moving and softening edges
6:10 - Drying some of the softened edges
7:10 - Getting it moving and adding colors
8:25 - More gold mixative
9:10 - Softening the top half
10:00 - Closeups of the gold and heating
11:00 - Creating ripples with alcohol inks
12:00 - Final drying

Thanks for watching! I’m using grafix craft plastic paper, it’s non porous so you can apply the inks directly on it or you can paint wet on wet with isopropyl alcohol 😃

I put the alcohol alone in the precision tip bottles for easy dispersing, the colored ink I leave in their original bottles. I will mix the metallic ink with alcohol and put them in a precision tip bottle to dilute the metallic ink.

Hi Nancy! I’m using a gold alcohol based pigment. The brand is Piñata and the color is “Brass” Ranger inks also make what they call Gold Mixative which works just as well. Thanks for watching and I hope this helps!

I am using it on Nara, but it starts to smell the minute I turn it on, without even aiming it anywhere near the artwork. Does this happen when it’s new, or should I try another one? T.I.A

I’m using a mini heat tool purchased on amazon , you can also use a hair dryer on its low setting it works just as well 😃 thanks so much for watching 🥰

Uso todo tipo, principalmente Jacquard Pinata y Ranger Inks. También uso tintas Marabu y Copic de vez en cuando. ¡Gracias por ver!

Yes absolutely! You will just need to seal the canvas with an acrylic varnish before applying inks. I use 3 coats of Liquitex acrylic glossy varnish. Hope this helps!
