Hey Guys,
Coach Omar Zeenni here. So a few of you have been asking me about the wide vs narrow stance set position. So I thought I would make a breakdown for it! Let me know if this video helped. If you have any further questions, feel free to DM me:
Clips 1-3: Okay guys, so as you can see from these three clips, Alyssa steps into the angled shot in a narrow stance, but as the shot comes, she quickly jumps into a wide stance.
Now, while she is making the saves in that wide stance, notice the location of those saves. They’re in an area that I call the Reach only Zone.
Reach Only Zone: Notice how when Armando jumps into that wide stance, his feet are now rooted to the ground, which means he can no longer pick them up. Because of this, he can’t push off of them. Now, he can only stretch his arms as far they can reach. By the time he repositions his feet, the ball will be past him. This wide stance limits and delays your lateral movement, and that can slow you down when you need that extra half second to make a save.
Alyssa Clips: Now I want to show you guys a few more examples of this, notice in these next two clips how Alyssa uses the same wide stance technique, but now the balls are being hit out of her reach zone. Because her feet are in that wide stance, she now becomes immobile and she’s limited to her reach.
Ryan Clip: Let’s look at Ryans feet as he prepares for this shot. As he steps forward, he jumps into a wide stance. And as you can see when we slow-mo the clip, that wide jump takes away all of the power from his legs. Now, because of this, he doesn’t have time to reposition his feet back into that narrow stance where he would be able to get a power step off, and as a result he can’t get any extra push and he ends up falling as far as his arms can reach.
HOW TO FIX THIS:
So, one way to combat this bad wide jump habit is to constantly remind yourself to:
1. Keep your jump small
2. Keep your feet shoulder width apart.
After watching film with Armando, we were able apply those two concepts into his next few reps.
First, let’s take a look at his small jump. With it, he’s able to release the pressure off of his feet and keep them active. This small jump allows him to get his feet back to the ground in time to take a power step. By doing this, he keeps his legs in the equation and now his body is moving in together instead of being split like we see with a wider stance.
Next, notice how his legs are shoulder width apart before the shot and only slightly wider after the shot is taken. While that wide stance limited him to a reaching zone, this narrower approach now gives him the ability to use either foot to power step as far as he needs to. This helps him break out of that zone and extend his reach.
Now, let’s watch these next few clips and see how this new technique is working for Armando.
Remember, it won’t come easy. It has taken Armando a few months of consistently reminding himself to stay discipline with his approach.
Try this in training and message me if you feel a difference in your technique and shot stopping ability!

Great demonstration of why not to set wide. We'll try to keep Henry's stance narrow at his young age so he doesn't get into the wide-stance bad habit that I have (Henry's dad)

You need to talk about where the shot is being taken. A wide stance should be used from medium to close distances because you don’t have the time to move your feet, especially if the shot is powerful as the ball will be in the goal before you’ve dived. At a medium range you should have you feet starting where your ‘power step’ would be and then lift your opposite foot off the ground and dive from there. A narrow set that your talking about should be used from longer distances when you have time to move your feet. a narrow but really tall set should be used from wide shot at a tight angle because the goal that the player can hit is small so any fast low shots can be foot saves, and the goals that your women goalkeeper was conceding would be easy catches.

Wouldn't the same be achieved better not by varying the stance width, but with varying how low you set? I think goalkeepers often get set wide instinctively because it allows for low center of gravity which allows to get down quicker, but I think a low (but not wide) stance achieves the same without compromising mobility.
@kimcarson4219
@kimcarson4219 2 жыл бұрын
Not really i think. I think the case is almost similar to penalties, you shouldn't widen your legs because it'd prevent you to get better reach. If you want to go lower faster just bend your knees and lower your back more with your hands ready on both sides. Just keep practice it

The other day I started training with a gk coach. During a drill against different shots from an attacker I kept widening myself before the shot was taken and if I wasn't able to extend and reach it I would concede. After conceding a tucked shot because I set too early the coach insisted I should wait until the last moment before committing, to keep my body narrow and store power into my movement. I proceeded to make one of the best saves straight after followed by multiple good saves. In the drills I went from conceding about 50% to conceding about 10%.

@beastyboy2529
@beastyboy2529 3 жыл бұрын
@@xawitzshaj3640 personally it depends on the shooting situation. For close or low down shots I would use my toes and slightly forward so its easier to drop to either side, however if the shot is from range or looks to be high up I would keep a more centre towards balls of feet approach so I could move back and to the sides whilst staying high.

So many coaches and training programs say not to use wide stance. Yet so many tall world class goalkeepers use the wide stance. Ter Stegen and De Gea even do the hop and arm swing as well. So why would youth/younger keepers, even those in college, be taught not to do this while they watch the best keepers in the world doing it?
@progkacademy
@progkacademy 4 жыл бұрын
Josh Pierce imo, the wide stance is great if you start wide. if you start narrow and then jump wide, that’s where you can run into problems. In these clips, that’s what I’m eluding to. If you watch all of the pros, most of them start wide and stay wide. That’s why they’re so effective. That’s an important note for young goalkeepers.

Imo, wide stance ain't a problem(a bit more than shoulder width) , an extra wide-stance (which limits you to your reach only zone) can cause you to screw up your dives. If you keep your feet too narrow, it'll be difficult to dive as your feet won't have enough space to make efficient movement.

Also Ryan’s feet weren’t the problem for the goal. Firstly, he was too close to his near post but that can be easily fixed. His jump that you and the rest of the goalkeepers make is a big problem. Your feet are in the air as the ball is being hit. If you really need to jump, try to time it so you jump before the ball is being struck.
@SeriousGoalkeeping
@SeriousGoalkeeping 3 жыл бұрын
This is not true. You want to time the jump so that you leave the ground just as the ball is being struck. If you time it properly, you will be in the air for a fraction of a second (6/30th sec. to be exact). It takes the brain a bit of time to process the flight direction of the ball. By being in the air it will give your brain time to process and then allow the goalkeeper to land favoring one foot or the other depending on the direction of the ball. For example, if the ball is travelling to the goalkeepers left, he can land heavily on the right foot and then immediate power step onto the left foot. In tennis it is called a "split-step". You can google it for video. Watch frame by frame video any of the top goalkeepers in the world, they all land well after the ball is struck and they almost always land favoring one foot or the other, rarely do they land with both feet at the same time.

You explained this nicely, but why are all the top-level goalkeepers, for example De Gea, Neuer, all in a narrow stance position, but when the player shoot all the jumps into this wide stance?
@progkacademy
@progkacademy 5 жыл бұрын
a short answer to your question would be that goalkeepers like De Gea and Alisson are taller than the average goalkeeper, so they can get away with being in a wide stance because their reach can make up for it, however, I believe that with shorter goalkeepers, it's key to stay in a narrower stance to give yourself the opportunity to take that extra step to make up that ground that our reach can't cover. Hope that helps!

@@progkacademy It may be so, but again I watched the Neuers and De Gea when they were younger that they did the same thing with wide stance, for example I am from Serbia and Serbia did not have a European goalkeeper until now, but now there is Milan Borjan, who also works in wide stance No one, like before but before, did it. Coach, I think, the first issue happens not because of stance width, but due to the kind of a hop and the timing. So it was pre-hop - no shifting to the ball side and it was done too late. The second example is not a pre-hop - there was significant lean towards the ball, timing was right and stance also became wider. But why should we start with narrow stance and then widen it ( too let our back leg push us to the ball more efficiently) ? There was a research, shown that relatively wide( 75% of leg length) stance is optimal. Of course with pre-hop at the correct time. It allows back leg produce more forse, because it's longeer on the ground( we don't bring it outside).About this research: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hatzjLx4zLLUkqM.html (starts at 59:35), also there're a bunch of other gems.

@progkacademy
@progkacademy 5 жыл бұрын
Ter Stegen starts wide vs jumping into a wide stance like we see in these cases. He's also a professional at the highest level, so even if he does jump wide, he has such quick feet that he can still get his feet right before getting a dive off. Also, I'm not trying to say that the wide stance will NEVER work, I just believe that from the evidence I've seen through watching film and from my own playing experience, I feel like jumping into a wide stance will significantly lower your chances of saving a ball outside of your diving space.

The big jump helps in making a spring to make a huge dive, but I've seen keepers who move their power step from wid (after the jump) to shoulder length to make a low dive or a top corner save so that they can push the ground better. Take Ter Stegen for example, that save against Dybala's bottom corner shot

Disagree. Arturo jumped into his wide stance right before the shot. Any high level experienced GK knows to never jump/hop right before a shot is taken. Feet must be set no matter wide or narrow before a shot because as you said it takes away that .5 second that is needed to make the save.
