Hi guys, great video as always. I wanted to know, is a grease a grease a grease? Should I be applying different products to different components, e.g. bearings, screws, skewers/thru-axles etc, or are they all pretty much the same product? I have some Fenwicks assembly grease, but I don't know if this is suitable for all jobs, or if I should be using different products for different jobs. Thanks!

I'm using the "gateway drug" of Silca Super Secret drip-on wax. Only the other day I was importuned on the street by a shady character trying to entice me with the hard stuff (a baggie of wax pellets). It's a slippery slope. Well lubricated, you could say.

@@frodo5882 you can re-use the wax many times, for the same chain or different chains. I don't know what the upper limit is (maybe it says on the bag?) Agreed that - like everything in cycling it seems - it is expensive. A chain is stupidly expensive when you consider that it's probably knocked out of Chinese factories for less than a quid/dollar/euro, and they don't last more than a few thousand miles, unless you wax them (allegedly).

On the point of the tire wear and pressure exerted, I've had a very similar experience in a *real-world" application. Caterpillar created a bulldozer with the suffix designation LPG, standing for Low Ground Pressure. (The one we had was a D5LPG vs a D5H. Both were "high tracks"). The tracks are optimized to exert the minimal amount of pressure possibel for the equipment, without changing anything else, except the tracks. The 5LPG vs the 5H track size is almost double in width, if I remeber correctly, for the LPG That piece of equipment could walk across a bog, swamp, wetland, silt pond-- right over the top of it, and not sink, where the other one, just the same, save the tracks, would sink up to the engine, over the tracks, and have to be winched out. It was amazing.

The whole weight of the vehicle is shared over the square inch footprint of the tyres or tracks. A 180 lb rider and bike has approx 95 lb on the rear and 85 lb on the front. 95 psi in the rear tyre gives 1 sq in of contact. 85 psi in the front gives a 1 sq in contact. The larger the contact area requires more tyre wall deformation to achieve. It takes energy to deform stuff. The energy finishes as heat.

9:20 that's the actual definition of pressure. Force per area. Car tyres usually have a pressure of about 2 to 3 Bar. Even a Porsche's tyre. Bike tyres... you know your tyre pressure 😉 The higher the pressure, the more the same force (=weight) will be concentrated on a smaller area.

Hi Alex and Ollie, Thanks for the great work : ) I have a question about the Strava app malfunctioning wildly. For example, last week I did a 10 mile ride (according to a simple wired bike computer that measures wheel revolutions), but the Strava app said I had covered 763 miles in 35 minutes, and the path included very straight lines across great distances over the wide open Atlantic. I'd have had to have been riding at greater than Mach 1 over deep ocean. On the plus side, it would have been my longest distance ride. On the negative side, I had to delete the erroneous data. I see less extreme examples of weird data pretty regularly, sometimes an extra 10 or 20 or 30 miles will appear, usually with more strange very straight lines that do not match any roads anywhere. Do you know what could be going wrong?

Still running rim brakes on a 10yr old carbon Ribble. And the Shimano parts be compatable with the Chorus 50 34 crankset. Main reason is to build new running gear for next years Peaks Challenge here in Australia. Need a 11sp cassette with a 36t for its lowest gear. Just trying to change specific things in the most cost effective manor. And find that Campag has lost its way a bit on parts and compatability. Thanks for any advice.

@askgcntech Just a quick update. Last week I sent a question because after 120km my tyre had started coming off the rim. A friend suggested dropping the pressure a tad because the inner tube expands due to heat from friction increasing the volume to increase which pushes out the tyre (think i got that right). I did that and have since ridden 102 and 140km plus shorter rides without issue.

Narrow 28c tires are slowing the peloton down. Tires will continue to get even wider. Chainrings have gotten larger & cycling has gotten faster. The weakest link is having to go so slow in corners because of lack of contact patch. Motorcycles have pretty wide tires for cornering upwards of 100mph and bike tires will certainly evolve to be much wider.

#AskGCNTech Thank you to the team for all the advice over the years! I am a heavier rider (around 95 kg) and finally got a bike fit. The fit itself went well, with my flexibility, I am lower on the front end than I ever imagined! My question is my saddle is tilted with the front half level with the ground and I still tend to experience perineum numbness after 15 minutes fully seated on my indoor trainer with my hands on the hoods. Is this more down to having excess weight why I cannot be on the saddle for a more extensive period of time, or could the saddle not suit my sitbones? Should I be out of the saddle by nature every so often, anyway? The bike fit was quite a drastic change that may take more time to get used to, just wondering what you all make of this. Thank you!

0:30 if you are considering wider tires because of comfort then they might actually also be faster because when your body is constantly moving up and down because you don't have big enough tires that also slows you down alot because it ofcourse takes energy to move body up and down and that same energy could be used to move you forward instead. if you have ever gone to gym you know exactly how much energy it takes to move like 60-70kg of weight up and down constantly. it's alot.

This time I did the ride at an average of 20w higher than last time, but I was only 4min faster despite it being warmer and in the dry (the first ride was cold and wet). I’ve checked my wheel bearings and bottom bracket, all of which seem to be fine. My chain is freshly waxed. What could be sapping my precious few watts? My tires are about a year old. Could they have degraded that much that they’re holding me back by tens of watts?
@feedbackzaloop

Regarding wear rates, what tyres gain in lesser pressure in the contact patch they lose in greater leverage across the contact patch. So the main reason for wider tyres to have less wear is rather simply having more compound to begin with.

#ASKGCNTECH Hi, GCN Tech peeps. I use a Wahoo Kickr V5 with Zwift over winter, as it’s often too snowy at 7,500 feet elevation here in the Colorado Rockies to ride outside. In preparation for spring, I recently got a 4iiii Precision 3+ single side power meter (on a GRX 800 crank) and paired it with a Wahoo Elemnt Roam V2. I was surprised to see that the 4iiii registered significantly higher watts than the Kickr trainer, so I set the scale factor on the crank power meter to 0.781 and now it produces readings in line with the Kickr. But is the 4iiii really recording watts 20% higher than the Kickr? Should I keep this scale factor when I start riding outside again? And how do I know which, between the Kickr and 4iiii, is accurate - if either? Thanks for your advice.

Contact patch -- IT IS ALL ABOUT PRESSURE! The pressure in a (road) bike tire (tyre...) is about twice the pressure in a car tire, so the pressure on the ground - or your foot - is the same. The system weight determines the contact patch. So, if my system weight is 160 #, or about 80# per wheel, and I have 80 psi (ok, Silca says 72 in the rear for my GP5000 measuring out at 29 mm) then my contact patch is 1 square inch. Full stop. The casing's ability to transfer load in compression is essentially nil (ergo riding on flats sucks). I actually started to go for "wide" (as in 25) tires about a decade ago as I was starting to get serious about the Pittsburgh Dirty Dozen and was trying on 23 mm Gatorskins and coming off whenever it was slippy and 30 % grade. Nevermind that Gatorskins have horrible grip, and changing to high quality tires of any width was a major help, I also figured that a wider tire would have a *wider* contact patch even at the same pressure - more or less a rectangle perpendicular to the bike rather than parallel to it with a stupidly thin track tire. So, at least my reasoning went, if I rolled over some oil or other road lubricants, I would have a better chance that at least part of my tire would find some grip, as opposed to all of my contact patch rolling over the exact same drop of lube. Does that make sense? The top of Logan St (Hill 4) is shockingly steep, narrow, has (had) a horrible broken surface, and old cars parked on the right hand side. When it rained you could literally see the oil slicks on the road. I learned quickly (and painfully) to stay left on Logan. (I never have been that good at unclipping on steeps - like that double unclip Ollie once described on Hardknott, which thankfully I encountered on a dry FW in 2019). I also once went up Boustead ("the one that hurts" - just after more famous Canton) immediately behind a delivery van that was literally streaming oil. That was a week before race day, and did I ever know where that slick line was and where to avoid. Carnage. So yea, the question is "Does lower pressure on a wider tire, and thus a WIDE contact patch give better overall grip?"

Quick question. I am ordering the all-new Canyon Grizl 5 AL tonight. It has a 2by set-up and is gonna be a frame size large (as I am very tall and large; 185cm is a very good fit). However, since it comes with 40mm "Continental Terra Trail ProTection SL 40-584" tyres I was wondering, how well would these last in a city say like the typical Dutch student cities. So good roads for the most part but also some cobbled old roads in the centre). As I will be using it both there and off-road in the forest environments in the dunes across the western coastline of the country I want to be sure they are good for both asphalt and off-road. I was/am highly considering buying Schwalbe G ONE R 40mm tyres as an additional set/replacement set as they would potentially suit the environment I cycle in better. But yeah, how good are these tyres? And could you perhaps make a tutorial on how to make your tyres tubeless one day? Would be a great addition for the beginner (road) cyclist. Cheers!

Typically rear wheel is 12 / 142 mm and front wheel is 12 / 100 mm (where 12 mm is the axle diameter and 142 or 100 mm is the width, end cap to end cap). There are other dimensions so you need to check what you have. Rear wheels may or may not be compatible with 10, 11 or 12 speed group sets…you need to check. Some come with spacers to go on hub to convert to different speeds or you may need to buy them separately.

#askgcntech Hi guys. I noticed my pulley wheels were dragging a bit so I serviced them. Once they were completely clean inside (I mean no grease whatsoever) they spin super quick and easy. I applied some grease and immediately they felt like they were dragging again. Is that normal? Should I use thinner grease? Thanks.

If you overpack the bearings, they do feel slower, but you get maximum protection against the elements. You can experiment with thinner grease with a lower percentage fill.

Hi Olie and Alex, I currently have a Dura Ace 9100 mechanical group set and am thinking of switching over to Di2. In your opinion, is it worth downgrading to Ultegra Di2 for better shifting performance, or staying with Dura Ace for weight gains and bragging rights. P.S. love the show, been watching GCN for 5 years now, you guys made me passionate about biking! #AskGCNTech

#askgcntech I have Kross Esker 2.0 MS from 2023. Microshift Advent X group set and Tektro mechanical disc brakes. I bought Challenge Getaway tyres, a 40 mm wide, foldable version. This was a mistake. I can't fit them together with the (TPU) tubes on the original rims - the tyres are too tight. What wheels from DT Swiss would you suggest buying to resolve this issue (I'm considering switching to riding tubeless)? I'm afraid of buying something incompatible with my drivetrain and disc brakes. I know you may not be allowed to give such a direct answer, but maybe some general guidelines at least?

#ASKGCNTECH Hi Ollie and Wilford, I am getting ready to buy a new set of Elite wheels for my Canyon Ultimate. I noticed that their road wheels in the Drive model are an internal rim width of 21 mm, with an external rim width of about 28 mm. But their gravel wheels have an internal rim width of 24 mm, with an external rim width of 31 mm. The weight penalty for their gravel wheel set is only about 60 g for the pair. I should note that I only ride on paved roads. But I am drawn to the wider rim width, and would like to run 30 mm tires. Which wheelset would you recommend? Thanks!
@GCNalex
@GCNalex 2 ай бұрын
I asked this exact question to Elite Wheels a few weeks back because i wondered the same. The answer is both would work fine. I would suggest if you are set on 30mm tyres (which i think are a good choice), the wider Internal rim would be more suitable. The Drive road is optimised for 26-28mm tyres. I am yet to try the gravel Drive on my road setup yet, but plan to soon.

0:55 yes, you are paranoid. The difference in the size of a 28 and 32 mm tire is theoretically 4 mm, and practically the 32 mm tire has a greater deflection, so depending on the pressure it will be closer to 2 mm. With a bicycle wheel spacing of 1000 mm, the angle will change by less than 0.2 degrees

I live in the Pacific Northwest in the USA, very similar if not exactly like the weather in the UK, only with less castles and a few more mountains. What does each GCN presenter use for chain lube? I know that Josh Poertner said, in an interview with Alex & Ollie, he uses wax year round, but can we get an answer from the whole crew?

#askgcntech Wide tyres vs narrow tyres and wear rate - part two. Isn't this like that, when you inflate both tyres to 'proper' pressures for each of them, the actual area of the ground contact patch will be the same and only its shape will be different? Isn't this a reason why both tyres roll exactly the same on a perfectly smooth surface? Hence, does the wider tyre rally is supposed to have a lower wear rate?

Staggered setups not only bring the weight down a little, it also helps with crosswind stability. For example, 40 mm front and 50 mm rear. Some 50 mm rims don't feel stable when used as a front wheel except something like DT Swiss' ARC lineup.

#askgcntech I think it is well-established that dry lube is kind of bad, but what about using wet lube for dry conditions? I have been using wet lube even when is dry, taking "extreme" precautions: applying it at least 5 hours before the ride, removing any excess from the chain a couple of hours after the application, and doing it again (cleaning the chain) after riding... mostly after the first ride. What are your thoughts on using wet lube in dry conditions? From my experience it lasts longer than dry lube, feels smoother, and with proper precautions is not that dirty.

#askgcntech Dear lovers of well maintained drivetrains, most all chain lube instructions say "wipe off excess lube" as the final step in the application process. Does this mean only the outside of the chain (the sides) or does this mean the top/bottom as well (including the rollers). Phrased differently, hug the chain with a rag or pinch it?
@robbikunkle4700
@robbikunkle4700 2 ай бұрын
Hug. When the derailleur is adjusted right, the chain makes gear contact on the rollers and sometimes inner plate surfaces. Most of the friction in the drivetrain is internal chain friction. If you thoroughly lube the chain and then very thoroughly hug it with a rag during some zesty backpedals, you leave lube between those pivoting surfaces, where it prevents sticky links, the true sign (along with chirping) of a chain thirsty for lube.

Is there something to pedalling disrupting the airflow vs simply staying put? I'd assume there's a tipping point in terms of speed where it would cause so much drag that you might begin loosing speed.

A lighter tire will rotate and move easier. A narrower tire will cause less drag in the wind. A narrower tire, on the other hand, will require a higher pressure to function.
