I rewatched this like 3 times a couple years ago. The thing I remember most is that there was not a single milisecond of humor, not once.

I remember watching this when it first aired and thinking the animation reminded me of Marvel Superheroes' style. Not a whole lot of action but enough camera tricks and moving mouths to give it life. Your commentary on that aspect of the series sort of backs that up. It was like the Marvel show, just given an artistic upgrade via Doug Wildey.

I was just barely 10 years old when the cartoon series aired, but because I was already I dedicated PotA fan, I was thrilled, and never missed an episode! Thank you for the retrospective.

As a mere strapping youth of 15,i remember this cartoon and watched it regularly. GREAT memories...& a great episode as always 😮😊

I had the novelizations for this series. Loved em as a kid. This and Star Trek the animated series, original Land of the Lost, and Super Friends were never miss shows every Saturday Morning.

I was older than the average kid. I was 16 in 1975. I remember the show well. The animation was sub-par because this was during the Dark Ages of American Animation that started were Warner Brothers closed Termite Terrace, their animation studio as a cost-cutting measure. I think this was due to Hanna-Barbera's dominating the market with their cheaper animation. The Apes didn't have airplanes of their own. In fact, the airplane they had, a WWII vintage P-40 Warhawk was found by Ape Archeologists and restored to flying condition with the purpose of capturing humans with a cargo net slung under the plane. I know because this was my favorite episode.

Its a rare thing anyone talks about this great ape cartoon, I love it.

Man I loved that Planet of the Apes cartoon. So psychedlic it reminded me of Bakshi.

DePatie-Freleng. Y'know? Freleng? As in Friz Freleng? One of the greatest Warner Bros. cartoon directors. The same company that produced Pink Panther. As for the executives, my good guess is that they were responding to pressure groups of the time. That's why many of the 70s' cartoons were bland and always had a moral lesson. Filmation was huge on this. Your channel must be the most professional I have ever watched. I don't know if you're scripted but I appreciate you cutting to the chase of information. Many is the time when I watch other channels and wait 3 to 5 minutes as they hem & haw and speak off the top of their heads before they get to the reason I am watching. I find most my favorite channels are somewhat polished but yours is the best...and your voice is very pleasing.

I loved the ape's franchise, and i remember this cartoon being shown very irregularly on uk TV,btw i did read that the reason that the gorillas had jeeps and trucks was that they were easier to animate than horse's

Wow! I had that exact same comic book that you show on 1:55. I had a few POTA comic books that I treasured but my sister thru them out. I remember watching this animated series in the '70s. I don't remember a lot of it tho. I remember the 3 humans walking thru a dessert. I remember an ape driving a truck and a song playing over his radio with the lyrics, 'I'm going humanoid over you'.

Great video review! HUGE Return fan! I love that cartoon. I remember watching it back in 75 when I was just in the 1st grade. I remember in the 90's when the Sci-Fi channel re-aired the series on Sunday mornings. That was the first time I had watched the show since childhood. Then in 2006 I got the dvd set. Just love it. Watched it a dozen times over, plus 2. ;) Like I said, a huge fan. I make my own custom Mego Apes based on the cartoon. When I start my youtube channel, I will spotlight them and a playset I'm building. Great channel and keep up the good work.

Does anyone remember the comic book seriesKamandi: The Last Boy on Earth which was a direct inspiration (or ripoff depending on your perspective) of the Planet of the Apes. The difference was that in addition to apes many other species also had their own territories and fought among themselves. The main character as a young boy was clearly meant to appeal to the comic book audience of which I was one who loved both Planet and this series in tandem.

You should cover the cancelled Planet of the Apes movies. Especially the Oliver Stone one starring Arnold Schwarzenegger sounded bonkers!

I LOVED this cartoon when I was a kid! Though I was confused how it tied into either the movies or the tv show. However, I did dig that they had many modern conveniences. And I remember fondly watching an ape farmer drive his truck down the road while listening to someone sing "I'm going human over you!" on the radio.

Is the Tarzan 70s Saturday morning cartoon topical? It was pretty good, but not many episodes and they kept reusing cels. But well-drawn and a few good scripts, iirc.

Suggestion: Men into Space(1959) TV series

I saw one episode while on vacation as a 5-year old kid (it didn't play in my rural area) and for years thought I'd dreamed it until I discovered the show years late.

Ah yes 1975. What a time that was to be a kid. With the live action TV series cancellation in 1974, this Saturday morning cartoon kept the Ape-wagon rolling along. But the 70’s was also all about kids playing outside and so as a result, I missed most of the episodes. Years later as an adult, I purchased the DVD set (Five copies to make up for my pour judgment as a ten year-old), LOL

Johnny Question has one of the best theme songs!!!

How did I miss this? I was 9 years old, a sci-fi addict since birth, and Saturday morning cartoons was my thing.

Absolutely loved this cartoon when I was in 5th grade.

Since you appear to enjoy all things Planet of the Apes, you might want to look up an episode of "Thundarr The Barbarian" "Valley of the Man Apes" which involves mutants patterned after the Movie apes, trying to rebuild the Giant King Kong Robot prop from the 1976 movie to use as a giant conquering robot, because... that's what they do in cartoons. Have fun!

I remember watching part of one episode. All I remember was they were driving around in a 2 1/2 ton truck. Sliding on a muddy road.

Hi Dan, Loving the channel. Hits the sweet spot between length - just right - and being engaging without coming across like a Wiki-dump. Here in the UK we had quite a few of the same shows, but rarely in the correct order or indeed their entirety (The Monkees being a prime example. Or should that be primate example?😂) Anyhow, keep up the great hit rate. Can I just put Carnival of Souls out there? That's got to be on your radar, right?

It didnt stop having merchandise in the 70s. Adventure Comics had a whole bunch of mini series and a full series from the late 80s into the mid 90s. They even crossed over with Alien Nation.

I liked this cartoon when I was a child. Many of my friends did not but I think you explained perfectly the reason why. The stilted, limited animation style was sort of a let down to some but I enjoyed that lushness it had the same as I enjoyed those classic Jonny Quest cartoons that now I know have a connection due to the great Doug Wildey. I haven't seen them in a long time but just like you do everything else you instill in me the desire to seek them out. I can't wait to hear your take on the legendary Jonny Quest cartoon. Thank you

This show debuted the very same week I turned four years old, and I have a few fuzzy memories of watching it and thinking it was the most exciting thing I had ever seen. I can also remember seeing the playsets for sale at the toy store and staring at the big wide boxes in absolute awe. A handful of the things that appealed to you as a very young child can stick with you forever!

The Dungeons and Dragons cartoon was another one where they never got home. - I know they did a thing later

I own this series and loved it. In my opinion this series and Star Trek the animated adventures in 73 were 2 of the best Saturday morning cartoons of the 1970s. Also I wish I still had all my mego figures.

I seem to remember the show being on earlier. I was 7 and was on a kids bowling league that I had to go to immediately after it was over. I probably would have dropped out if I had to miss it! I actually enjoy the animation

Good video!! Was 12-years old when this cartoon came out. Do remember this cartoon existing but really do not remember whether or not if I saw any episodes. After the "Bugs Bunny / Road Runner Hour" was over on a Saturday morning, it was time to go outside and play with my friends or ride my bike or whatever. also, do remember the TV series and tried catching a few episodes but battling for the TV with a brother and 2 sisters, was kind of tough. Did build a few models though.

As a 1970's kid, this was my first contact with the Apes franchise. Then I discovered the Live Action show and last the movies. I really liked the TV show better. Funny thing is that the apes had jeeps in the animated show while they only had horses in the live action. I guess animating a Jeep is cheaper than a horse, eh?
