I get what you are saying but I can tell you honestly ( I was in the same high school first eleven ) Matt Hayden was not a prodigy or someone you said was destined to play first class let alone test cricket. He worked so hard !! Extra training with his older brother Gary after our net sessions had finished. To me he is deserved his success because he earned it ….super tough and disciplined. Chapelle said it right, Langer is not a legend and to me he appears to coach with the passion he played with.

Justin Langer, from 105 tests scored 23 - 100s, 30 - 50s, highest score of 250, scoring nearly 8000 runs from his 105 tests, that’s pretty consistent and he certainly had some legendary knocks and often hung around as our top order dropped like flies on many occasions. Bit unnecessary to say he’s not a legend, whether it’s your opinion or not.

Even though I'm NOT a fan of Justin Langer but in YOU stating his aggregate throughout his tenure in MY opinion I reckon that He was better than Matthew Haydon. Haydons highest score was against a mediocre Zimbabwe and YES Haydon did have a brilliant series over in INDIA when He came back to the test team after about a 5 yr absent and LANGAR hung around alot more than Haydon when the batting collapsed around him. ..... just MY opinion though

@@theread59 That is actually hilarious. Martyn was a fringe player and was in and out of the side. Was in no way as valuable as Langer. The amount of games, averages basically every stat you can think of Langer has it all over Martyn. Im a big fan of Martyn and wasnt the biggest fan of Langer during his time as opening batsman but that was more of a personality thing. I cant deny that Langer was a more consistent and much better batsman. Clearly opening the batting in test cricket is a much tougher challenge than a middle order batsman. Martyn was brought up the order on some occassions but would mainly bat at 6 before Gilly.

As a neutral, all I can say is Langer may not be legend in comparison to Sachin, Lara, Ponting. But he was a modern test great on his own. There were several innings where he grinded it out and ensured Aussies had a great opening partnership. Its easy to get lost in the greatness of McGrath/Shane's bowling. But one of the major reasons Aussies dominated then was because of the opening partnership that made sure there was scoreboard pressure on the opposition. Its most important factor in tests.

Of course Langer is a legend. But the thing is that there can be all sorts of legends for all sorts of things. Not best batsman of all time. So not a Bradman or Ponting legend. But averaging 45 at test level and 50 at first class as an opener! That is absolutely world class and legendary. As a lover of the baggy green and as someone that drives standards within the changeroom - absolutely legendary. So a stupid comment by Chappelli. Was Langer important as coach after the debacle of sandpapergate and the Lehmann years. His lifting of standards, stopping the sledging and bat sportsman like behaviour was absolutely legendary. He took control of the tean on and of the field. Obviously, over time the players wanted him to follow a more traditional coaching role and the captains wanted to seize back control of the team. Ok. But lets not underestimate the legendary work he did in changing the culture of the team.

Chappell was a boyhood hero of mine. I always listen carefully to Ian Chappell's opinion given his long experience and the fact that he was a very good captain in his day. He is thoughtful and his commentary is noted for its candour. Much of his commentary is in response to hyperbole in media comment. It is a challenge in his profession to respond to the hyperbole in a way that grounds it, without being unnecessarily disrespectful to players. This is a skill Chappell struggles with. It is really hard these days to get a positive opinion from Chappell about any player, an administration or the development of the game. Unfortunately Chappell has become bitter with age. His comments about Justin Langer were just plain rude. Langer was a better player than Martin and indeed Ian Chappell, not because Langer had a better range of strokes (he didn't); but because he valued his wicket more. Langer played in an age when test nations were more competitive than in Chappells era. Esp India and Pakistan. Langer played 105 test matches, averaged 45.3 (50.2 vs England). South Africa was good in both eras - Langer averaged 42.7 in 11 matches against the likes of Donald and Pollack; Chappell failed averaging just 16.9 across 9 matches. Chappell played 75 tests, had a lower average of 42.4 (and 41.1 vs England). Chappell did well 57.2 avg vs West Indies, helped by the fact that he retired in 1980 missing most of the two decade period of great WI teams.
