Secret Santa is back and this Christmas is bigger than ever!
The EastIdahoNews.com team is busy helping a local man gift more than $500,000 this holiday season. A lot more. Secret Santa is a real person who wants to remain anonymous and hopes to help as many people as he can.
We will be surprising deserving people and families every day from now until Christmas with gifts unique to their circumstances.
Yuko Shelton was born with a drive to improve everything around her no matter how hard her own life got. She was widowed a year and a half ago when her husband, Mark, died of a tumor.
Yuko learned to drive in order to take her husband to doctor appointments and has always put others' needs above her own. She moved to America from Japan, a country that she longs to see again, and is still learning English.
After her husband's death, Yuko was left with nine children with two teenage daughters still at home. Yuko works as a custodian at Inkom Elementary where she gives everything she has and takes nothing in return. Showing up to work and giving 100% every day is Yuko. She climbs under, over, and around just to wipe a table leg or pick a piece of trash up off the ground. Her body is in constant motion as she smiles down the halls, dusting art as she goes. Doing what may seem like a tiresome job, she makes it look effortless.
Outside of work, Yuko volunteers her time by teaching children about origami. After work, Yuko helps teachers lengthen legs on desks or rearrange classrooms simply because she gives everything she has to everyone she knows! Giving $5 to teachers for their birthdays brings tears to their eyes because they know that is her everything. Giving to others is Yuko's legacy.
She brightens everyone's day and is a bright ray of sunshine.
Secret Santa asked the East Idaho News elves to visit Yuko and present her with an early Christmas gift. Watch the video to see the surprise at Inkom Elementary.

When a widow is still crippled by medical payments a couple years after her husbands death, theres something seriously wrong with the system.

I Agreed. I'm lucky to be born in right country where we don't have to have medical depts. Our medical need is payed by taxes. If you got cancer, broke a leg you don't have to pay 1000 of dollars. It's free, thanks to our system. More countries should follow the same example when it comes to medical care.

Can we agree that she made her life harder than it needed to be by having 9 children with a low income job. 0 sense of responsibility. What a bad message to send. Just have kids you can't afford and someone will always be there to bail you out. Getting government housing, food, AND $/child every month for making poor life decisions....yeah I love the USA.
@johneBGood
@johneBGood 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-dy2xu3uv8k No, I can not agree with you. I do not know her whole story. What was her husband´s job and so many other questions are unanswered? I find it difficult to judge anyone, especially if I have not walked in their shoes.
3 жыл бұрын
@@johneBGood Very true. In context of today's hyper-charged political environment, hard work and consistency transcends race, social status and ideology. Immigrant asian households build upon foundation of education and hard work to achieve their goals; nothing is taken for granted.
@user-dy2xu3uv8k
@user-dy2xu3uv8k 3 жыл бұрын
@@johneBGood There needs to be some level of accountability for having 9 children. If her husband had a level of income to support 9 children than his life insurance/ pension from his great job would have been more than enough to take care of her and the kids. If not, then they were clearly not able to have/care for that many children. Then, the only way to support that family is to get money from the government. If that is the case then they are on so much assisted living (9 kids worth) than there is no struggle for money. The average aide, per kid, is $600 here in New York. Could you imagine her getting $5400/month just for having kids she can't afford. On top of that, working a low paying job allows her to make just under the amount needed to opt her out of many aide programs. Further allowing her to collect money from the government (on top of the money she gets from the kids), just for her own aide. I understand the concept of walking a mile in her shoes but when do we hold her accountable? I still don't agree that rewarding someone for poor planning and preparation in life; especially when it comes to having excessive amounts of children, is something that should be glorified. What I'm saying about their financial circumstances is common sense.
@johneBGood
@johneBGood 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-dy2xu3uv8k I agree to disagree. It would seem that you are looking at this as just an American. In many of the Asian countries, birth control is taboo. Also, the teachings of the Catholic Church in these countries about the pill and condoms tell a very false story and so the people are afraid of any form of birth control. Keep smiling

Hi! If you ever need to talk, hit me up! I lost pretty much everything, health, mobility, and so on, with 6 young children to raise. 5 of them with ADHD. My husband was working 7 days a week and our marraige was very broken. We have come out the other side of this. I still have 5 kids at home, the oldest having enough scholarships to move out and save up for her own place. We have a house that works for my mobility issues, amd my husband is learning to do things God's way. I still am very sick, and often don't have a lot of good days, but God turned all of this into a blessing and uses it for his glory. Praying for you! I have a KZfaq channel if you want to send a message to me. You don't have to watch or agree. But if you need an ear or a shoulder, just leave a message. I will give you my email. And pray with you or for you. You are not alone. Much live and many blessings to you! God can and will provide!

She is Japanese, and in their culture, to "ignore" a debt by any family member, for any reason, is a mark of Family Dishonor. She would never, ever, Not pay that debt. It might take her a lifetime, but she will pay every cent. It would be unthinkable to her, to not pay it. This may seem crazy to some of us, but this is part of who she is. Sometimes, it is even hard for some Japanese to accept large gifts, even when they are especially needed.

This one really hit me hard. My mother also came from Japan. After a few moves around the US with the military, my father left us for a few years when he retired from the Air Force. She learned to drive, and even before that, took a taxi to work to support us. My father came back over a year later and they purchased their first house. He died about a year later, leaving mom mother with 3 children, 8, 10 and 12 years old. Thankfully he had some life insurance and died suddenly, so there were no medical bills, and my mother was able to take some time to grieve before having to return to her rather low paying job. Culturally, it is uncomfortable for traditional Japanese people to accept random gifts. I don't know as much about the men, but the women tend to be quite giving, without expecting others to return the generosity. Is it possible for someone trustworthy that knows her to set up a go fund me account to help pay off the medical bills?
