Wife Faces Giving Husband's Heart to a Stranger | Chicago Med | MD TV

Doctors help to keep a couple alive after a car crash, but when the husband is showing poorer signs of health, the wife is given a tough decision to make.
From Chicago Med Season 3 Episode 1 "Speak Your Truth": A few months after he was shot outside of the hospital, Dr. Daniel Charles prepares to testify against his shooter. Dr. Robin Charles is released from a rehabilitation facility, but Dr. Rhodes worries about her behaviour at home. Dr. Manning returns to work after a sabbatical, where she and Dr. Halstead confront their feelings for one another once and for all. Meanwhile, Dr. Choi and April try to navigate their new relationship while keeping it under wraps at work and Dr. Bekker gets off on the wrong foot with Dr. Rhodes when she poaches one of his patients.

When my friend passed from kidney failure she wasn’t an organ donor either but they still asked her family if they could have her eyes. Her family said No but they weren’t pressured about it at all. They do ask the family even if they aren’t on the donor list but no one has a right to pressure the family.

I didn't expect this clip to make me so uncomfortable. In a time where consent is so important, it bothers me that they would not only go against the wishes of another human being, but also come to the grieving wife at her most emotionally vulnerable moment. This did not feel ethical. I understand the issues with our current nation wide organ shortage and how transplants save lives. But where is the line drawn on moral decency?

It’s because the organs are only good for so long and usually the decision is made before the patient dies. Morally it is more important to save other lives than spend time comforting family members, as terrible as it sounds. Consent is important but imo saving lives is more important. Maybe I’m too much like Dr house lol

Sometimes people won't register because they don't/can't think it will ever happen. This world has many, many sick people who need organs and not enough to give.

Why? How will they know? It’s not like they’ll care anymore. It’s pretty selfish to have an option to save many lives and just ignore it bc someone who isn’t even here anymore says they don’t want to.

That was very cold to pressure this woman about donating her husbands organs then leaving her all alone. Organ transplantation is all about the money. The pay out from the insurance companies is what makes these hospitals and doctors wealthy. This is what they really care about.

Like they said (2:55) they couldn't do anything surgical for him, just hope that medication would be able to bring down the pressure from the bleeding. Dr Latham is the head of cardiothoracic surgery, and also autistic. Depending on where this episode is in regards to his character development, he may have understood that his blunt manner and problems with social cues would not be appropriate for dealing with a grieving widow, thus asking Manning and Halstead to ask about organ donation instead.
