When Jimmy Page first presented this to John Paul Jones, it didn't have the scale on it. JPJ said there wasn't a scale that existed that could be laid over it. Page basically said "hold my beer."
@fourseasons4105
@fourseasons4105 3 жыл бұрын
Every note you play can be scaled in one way or another. The distance between notes is referred to as 'Intervals' which relate notes and create different emotions or moods. So no matter how weird is what you play the notes in it have some intervallic connections and can be called either lydian or phrygian of any sort.

I think the story goes that Robert Plant had of seriously injured ankle due to a car accident and the reference in the song title is to the Achilles heel. It was thought at one point that he would never be able to stand and sing again. Gratefully that did not occur. Great song to play while driving a car but be careful you may well get a ticket! Zeppelin is heroic for many reasons including endurance!

Something about the singing, the composition and the intricacy holds it back from being 'heavy metal'. At times it's almost like jazz or something. The parts where Plant wails over it towards the end sound so nostalgic and folky and English. For me it's like something you can listen to late at night on a summer's evening and actually find it relaxing and soulful rather than powerhouse.

@@neillenet291 Julie is correct. Page has said on many occasions he wasn't as happy with In Through The Out Door. Jones and Plant were the main writers of it, Page was fine with it as Plant wanted to do it in remembrance of his son. All of My Love was written for Karac. The album took on a theme and "Feel" because of what was happening. Jimmy said "It wasn't Zeppelin" but understood and would not interfere as it was something RP had to do. Page stated that he and Bohnam both wanted to get back to a Guitar based songs for their next album. Then of course it didn't happen as John Bohnam died (RIP).

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart are huge Zeppelin fans and directly lifted this galloping bass line for their song Barracuda. In addition, I believe Bonzo's staccato drumming inspired Metallica's "One". This song recounts Robert and Jimmy's many trips to North Africa and other places. The title references Robert's car accident in which he broke his leg; he recorded the entire album from a wheelchair (the working title for this song was "The Wheelchair Song"). Lyrics also reference Albion and Atlas (both as the mountain range and as the Titan from mythology). It is a very intense song and one of Jimmy's favorites.

The album you were trying to think of was "Led Zeppelin Remasters" 1990. CD's were gaining popularity & digital recording was getting more advanced so, many older recordings were being digitally remastered for the CD market. If I'm not mistaken "Remasters" was a box set.

That’s a good one, but my personal favorite off that album is “Nobody’s fault but mine” hands down. And it’s funny because I was listening to a Seattle based radio show earlier today called “All Blues”, where they play everything from it’s beginning to current blues songs. Today they did a feature of “Nobody’s fault but mine” that was originally done in the late 1920’s, then again in the 40’s, in the 70’s by Led Zeppelin, and also by other artists later still. So don’t miss that off of Presence! Cheers! 🎸

Zeppelin was "all that they were cracked up too be" in a live setting. I saw them during 1 of the 6 legendary sold out concert dates at Madison Square Garden during their 1977 North American tour. Majestic, powerful, awe-inspiring and totally unforgettable. Eventhough I was not present the night they recorded their "live" material, "Achilles Last Stand" was the highlight for me that night. Surprisingly, 21 nights later, I saw a band performing in concert that blew away the mighty Zeppelin. June 28th, South Phillys Spectrum. Pink Floyds "In the Flesh" tour promoting their "Animals" album. Pink Floyd "by a good length" at the finish line. Now THAT show was total perfection.

I was a huge fan of progressive rock at the time, but I also had already been a Led Zeppelin fan since 1969 and never thought there was any contradiction between the two, despite arguments to the contrary with one of my closest friends at the time. Thank you so much for the reaction video. This song has always been one of my Zeppelin favorites and is an excellent example of how tight the band was. If you ever want someone to hear how good John Bonham was, this is a great choice. (Although I'm sorry, but this song is not about the Trojan War, although Achilles was a big part of "The Iliad," the classic epic by Homer which is about the war. It's instead inspired by a trip to Greece that Robert Plant and his family took, where they were in a bad car accident and Robert broke his foot so badly that they didn't know if he was ever going to walk again. And Achilles was killed by an arrow to his tendon...which is why that part of your foot is called the Achilles tendon)

Despite the recent rise of heavy metal bands since the mid '70's and this songs influence on them, I remember vividly this album was never really popular with Led Zep fans when it was released in '76. As a die hard Led Zep fan I never bought this album on its release and I still find it hard to wrap my brain around it. To buy an LP for just one or two songs never seemed like a good choice considering the ''every track a killer'' we were used to by these bands. Presence and Coda for me were never really well received across the world at the time but I did buy 'In through the out door' when it came out in '79 and it kinda saved my love for the bands familiar sound. I might add, fans were mostly pretty hard on bands if they turned out lackluster releases.....I guess we were spoiled for choice.

Love Jimmy's layered guitar army on Achilles. Robert's vocals are perfect fit. Jonesy gave Steve Harris something to aspire to! And well, John Henry, just brings the thunder like crazy, he drives this song. I recall hearing this story of Bonzo was at a Deep Purple concert and sometime during the show, maybe right at the beginning, he ran up to the open mic and shouted something like, "I'm John Bonham from Led Zeppelin and we got a new album coming out called Presence and it's bleeping great!" Whose to say if its true but it's funny anyway! Really the whole album is worth review!

It was once said that when Jimmy Page played this to Keith Richards for the first time, he said he would need extra guitar players to help him play it live!! Not a chance, this is the six fingered magician he can play anything live. Check out the live version from Knebworth in 1979

5 guitar tracks for the recording, I've heard he said it's his best guitar work and most difficult to recreate live.

This was the year of Frampton Comes Alive and it was hard to get anything else on the radio! That being said, this did get airplay locally.......in the context of 1976.....it was a bit unusual. The Boston debut, Fleetwood Mac's new group debut, Hotel California.....Joni Mitchell.......just sayin! (Hejira album....her first with Jaco).

Great call with the "Galloping" bass comment. I had the same Iron Maiden/Achilles Last Stand reaction when I first started listening to IM back in '82 (I saw them open for the Scorpions...or vice versa...cant remember)

This song always sounded a bit "proggy" to me when I first heard it some 40+ years ago🙄, but it really is a great song. For a "bluesy" change of pace, you could check out, "I'M GONNA CRAWL". This was on the 1979 album In Through The Out Door. It's a really deep cut, but you will love it!

I always felt there were 2 sides to Zep: the prog side and the straightforward hard rock blues side. On the prog side- Kashmir, Rain Song, Achilles. On the other side- You shook me, Dazed and Confused, etc. I was always partial to the prog stuff. Kashmir is a masterpiece. I can only listen to so much of Plant wailing about lemon juice down his leg before I hit skip. Lol

'Presence' is wildly underrated. This track is so fucking bonkers. The production is sublime. Jimmy Page seems to have found a renewed appetite for each band member's particular skills.

My Favourite Band, I have met Rob Plant the lead singer twice, once in the pub, where he had a few drinks, got up on stage and sang, and once in the Local Supermarket, lives five miles up the road from me, great bloke does a lot for charity not up his own ass like a lot of them. Check out Babe I'm gonna leave you.

2 things, This album, if I'm not mistaken, was recorded in the blink of a eye relatively speaking. Robert Plant sang it from a wheel chair, due to a broken leg, from a car accident.

Midway through, I always thought of it as the band battling, page with one of the best solos, then bonhams drums pound in and take over, then the drums support the blaring bass line, plants vocals are amazing, then it slowly fades. Great song, very heavy metal sounding. Just showing if they wanted to go heavy they could have easily done it.

In reference to that galloping beat Deep Purple put that to good use back in 1970 on their In Rock album. Hard Loving Man is the track, and it closes that album.

The galloping beat in this song also inspired Heart’s Barracuda, according to their drummer. And speaking of drums, there is a drum fill around 5:58 in your video that will have drummers picking their jaws off the floor the first time they hear it. Bonzo was famous for pulling sh*t like that out of nowhere and one of the reasons he’s name-checked as one of the greatest in rock.

If she hasn't heard Physical Graffiti that's what you need to play. It was mainly outtakes from the previous albums. Even the title track of Houses of The Holy is actually on Physical Graffiti--just shows how strong Houses of The Holy was that even the title track didn't make the final cut.
