This video helped me a lot. I got a used Wii U from someone with rough kids. I bought the lost cords and controllers on Ebay. It worked well when I got it. I had it in my home, playing it in the living room. I decided to move it to a different room with Mario Kart 8 still inside the console. I hooked it up in the bedroom and Mario wouldn't Eject. Nothing worked, so i pulled the disc out with tweezers. I couldn't insert discs anymore. I couldn't even force one in. I used this video to take apart my Wii U step-by-step. There was a tiny, fat twig inside, probably from kids. The disc drive was repaired. Upon taking off the front face piece with the eject and power buttons, the first ribbon wire immediately detached from the face, not the console. I was having a hard time re-inserting it. It worked momentarily, then the ribbon fell back out. Everything worked with the disc drive, but the eject and power were flickering, you could say. I was having a hard time. I used tweezers to carefully re-insert the ribbon and firmly, but gently, wedge it into place. It was a nightmare, but it worked. I put the outer shell of the console back together. Two screws from the inside were overlooked during re-assembly. Still works. I'm gonna keep the screws in a box and keep playing wii u without them. Thumbs up on the video. It helped a lot.

Thanks for this video. I had an invalid disk error for a while; mine was a different cause (spec of crud on the laser) but the disassembly of the drive etc was very helpful! Got some happy boys now!

Thank you so much for the detailed of how to take it apart. My 2 year old stuck a disc with stickers and googly eyes on it, causing the eject button to not work. Other than completely stripping those 2 triscrews on the front and having to drill them out... works like a charm!

When your cd is not recognized, first, check you're not a dumb ass like me and you tried to start a Wii U cd from the Wii menu

Love the comment, “your lose,” hahaha that had me laughing. Also for any of you wondering I just called Nintendo and they discounted the Wii U for hardware repairs. Obviously this was a hardware error and they know they messed up. It’s sad they can’t take the responsibility and refund people. Seriously I’ve seen small companies do better than this but what do you expect when you run into a hotel on a monopoly board.

AMAZING TROUBLESHOOTING! This was so great, i tried getting in to replace the laser, but I couldn't figure out how to get the old laser out. When I put it back together it made this noise. I'll see If I can fix it now. Have you ever replaced it's laser?

I have a Wii U and I'm getting a 160-1400 error, take everything apart trying to fix it and i'm still getting the error, although it has gone from being immediate to at least starting to load the OS and into the menu screen then poof error again. it has been literally 100 times and the only way out is to pull the plug.

So, back around 2014-15, my brothers tried to clean the game disc (they were 5 - 7 years old) and they used kool-aid to clean it?? (Idk why) and the disc drive never worked since. I've tried clean it by blowing it/using a can of air (is that what you call it?) And nothing worked. I'm scared of opening it up and breaking it. Do I need to clean the lens or replace the whole drive? (If I ever open it...)

I know this video is old as hell, but any advice on fixing a disc reader that broke because two disc were put in the console? My little sisters have made it impossible to play any games that I have because I only have disc games.

It's too hard. Nintendo over tightened the screws that hold the front of the plate for the disk drive. There is no way to remove them

Is it safe to have the Wii U internals exposed while you have the power cable plugged in? I get really scared of some sort of electrocution stuff or frying something in the console.

My Wii U just started having an error 150-1031. It looks like it read the game, but when I go to play it, the error pops up. My other games work, its just happening to Monster Hunter 3U and DuckTales. Both discs are in pretty mint condition. Could it possibly be the disc drive? Or maybe the laser?

My wii u reads my wii discs but not my wii u discs. (I bought a super mario maker disc off of ebay its coming today ill update if it worked) I have 2 nintendo land discs (one i bought recently from gamestop) they both didnt work it might be a coincedence and i have a super mario maker disc (I was scratched alot so it wouldnt have worked either way) If these dont work then i might need to buy another disc drive or lens

Mine works fine with other games but Mario 3D World specifically causes the grinding noise. Odd.
