Transcription: Hei, minun nimi on Jenni.
English translation: Hi, my name is Jenni. I'm Finnish but I've lived in the States for quite a while. Now that I have lived abroad for a while I've noticed how different people in Finland, and everywhere. Finns are pretty quiet people. We don't really like to do a lot of "small talk" so if you're visiting someone's house it's not weird if you're just quite, we don't really have that "awkward silence" Americans seem to have. I think that's pretty unique. I'm used to American culture because I've lived here for so long, so I actually think I talk too much if I go to visit Finland, but then here, I've recently met some Finns and I've asked them what do Americans think of them and they seem to always say that they think they're really quite and sometimes even mean. Often people say to me that they think I'm mean or rude somehow just because I don't talk as much. It's hard to understand if you're American because you're so used to the fact that talking a lot is the norm. But I think that if you start to travel a lot you start to realize how different people are and how they live their lives. I've lived in Shanghai, China for 5 years, Iowa for 7 years and now in New York 4 years. Usually I go to Finland twice a year and so it still feels like Finland is my home but at the same time it really isn't because I haven't lived there for so long, I have no friends there. And I guess in some ways I'm more American than Finnish but I still always want to "connect to Finnish culture" because I think it's really interesting and I just love Finland so much. So it's kind of hard because I don't have friends there or a real home, so that's why I'm not really sure where my home is because I've lived for so long in different places. In a sense it's a good thing because I don't know for how much longer I can stay in New York (because I have to get a new visa soon), so in a way it's a good thing because I don't feel like I have to go back to Finland, I don't feel like I have to stay here either, I can go wherever I want and it'll be ok. And I can still learn more about other cultures. So I think it's important for everyone to try to understand each other better so that you don't think that someone talks too much or too little because everyone is just different.

Guys she's Finnish but has lived in America for quite a long time, I'm a Finn and she says it right at the beginning. She's not an American learning Finnish, you can tell by her appearance too that she's Finnish, she looks like a typical Finnish woman, blonde hair, blue eyes etc. And Jenni, ending with an "i" is a normal female Finnish name. "Hei, minun nimi on Jenni, minä olen suomalainen mut mä oon asunu Amerikassa aika kauan aikaa" "Hey, my name is Jenni, I'm Finnish but I have lived in America for quite a long time"

@@hissukka6619 from my understanding, hyvä is used to describe that a particular thing is good and that in English would have a or an before it (eg. 'A good day'). Whereas hyvää is used for something less particular (eg. 'Good day!' - as a greeting).

***** She is a native but hasn't spoken it much in many years like she says in the video, which is apparent from the way she speaks. My comment was for those who are looking for an example of spoken Finnish saying that this isn't the best example out there (as this is Wikitongues this is a great example of expat Finnish but not as much of natural spoken Finnish). My comment is void of ridicule and scorn, the post scriptum was for my fellow compatriots to be just a silly footnote; she says "niinku" a lot (it means 'like') which is a word people especially in this dialect 'abuse'.

I enjoy watching this video, it helps you get used to the speed people talk in this language. I have to follow a few times with the subtitles as I can't even hear her pronouncing certain words almost as if she skips them and when I get back on track with where she is suddenly there's a few extra words and I'm lost again. Never the less, it's interesting to know the speed. As long as I can hold a conversation in Finnish I would be happy. I'm always amazed how Finnish people are never out of breath when they speak, at times it seems like an exhausting language in terms of breathing

As a Finnish speaker I think she speaks like a young native speaker would. Actually she sounds a lot like how the youth speak in capital area and those who are very international and good at English. Finnish might sound quite different depending on where the person is from/socioeconomical status. As a person living in Eastern Finland, I notice that people from South have a bit different tone, stress, vocabulary and overall way of speaking.

It is amazing how much culture influences communication. I’ve been to Georgia 🇬🇪 (not my home state of Georgia) and Italy 🇮🇹.. admittedly it is hard to understand how other people communicate. People in Georgia are friendly, so much so that friends greet with a kiss.. but most are stone faced and are very serious because it is sincere. My semi permanent grin probably made me look like a psycho to them. It is easy to misunderstand and get offended by other people that aren’t like you.. with no ill will intended.. Italians are quick to call anyone out who irritates them. But it’s just normal there. I think as English speakers we use small talk to keep things light and to make people comfortable around us. If you know what’s on someone’s mind and they are communicating friendliness through idle chatter they are a lot less intimidating. Mexicans and South Americans chatter and joke a lot too and most of the time are pretty friendly or easy going. I want to go to Japan but I’m almost sure I’ll offend someone on accident. Communication is more than verbal and it’s a tough thing to figure out.

Through my best friend's wife who is from Finland, I have met a lot of people from there and so I hear this language gets spoken a lot. Up until now I still find it to be a weird language primarily because it is rare for me to hear a European language that is neither from the Romance or Germanic branches.

Finnish is agglutinative. There is a high chance that it's a suffix and that's why they use it repeatedly. I hope a Finnish speaker will clarify it 🙂

She's lived in the US for a long time... I think she's used to overusing the word "like" while speaking English and has just replaced it with "niinku" when she speaks Finnish :/ No offence but it's very easy to tell she's not super used to speaking Finnish... I don't think "niinku" is overused this much by the average native Finnish speaker but overusing "like" in English seems pretty common to me.
