For Access Hollywood's series "Surviving Child Stardom," Zuri Hall had an intensely personal interview with Wil Wheaton, in which the "Stand By Me" star opened up about what he felt was the dark side of his fame. "The only reason I didn't kill myself as a teenager was that I didn't know how. That's how much pain I was in," he shared. Wil said claimed acting was "forced on" him by his mother and claimed he was emotionally abused by his father. A spokesperson for Wil's family told Access they were "shocked" by his allegations.

Just watched "Stand by me" yesterday. Now I get why Wil Wheaton played his role so phenomenally. I'm shocked that he actually did not have to act, but just to be himselve reflecting his own life.

Him saying the only reason he didn't kill himself as a teenager was that he didn't know how, while also knowing how close he was to River and seeing him die to drugs, makes it doubly heartbreaking. Wil managed to stay away from those hard drugs though, even though I'm sure he was surrounded with people who used them for a good amount of time. I'm proud of him for getting through that.

I think the most telling evidence of the "closeness" of the family is that the statement was from the Wheaton family spokesperson. Close knit families tend to express shock from their own mouths, not through a PR mouthpiece who probably wrote several drafts before achieving the correct, clinical, "heartfelt" tone that would resonate with the widest demographic of the public.

Man the “only reason I didn’t kill myself when I was younger…” really hit me. You can see the impact it had on the interviewer like she gets it, and too many of us do. @Yseson _ I read your comment that you made: "I think the only reason I didn’t kill myself was because I knew that I’d one day get away." I was blown away by that comment but I can relate to that so well. I grew up in a household where crazy insane behavior was off the charts many times, so much drinking and alcoholism. And sometimes the fighting between my parents was so overwhelming. Although there was no physical abuse, there was verbal abuse. I remember just trying to stay out of the line of fire and either going to a different room downstairs, or leaving the house and going for long walks, or going over to a friend's house where there was not crazy insane behavior. I just never understood why other people and families had such calm households. I always thought as a kid that the craziness and dysfunctional behavior that I experienced as a kid was normal. My siblings and I left that household, one by one, as we got older. And I think my brother and sisters all had the same mentality, we all thought: When I get out, things will be so much better, and I will get away one day. And we did, and it did get better. But still it's so shitty that many people grew up in such toxic FKd up households.

About 2 years ago I had a co-worker commit suicide. We had just talked the day before he killed himself. We talked about places I've been and places he wanted to see. The last thing he said he wanted to take his daughters to California I told that is good. He said he never been to the ocean. That Monday they were talking about a coworker that died. I didn't know who they were talking about. Then I asked is Matt here? Then a person said that is who died. I didn't even know his real name.

And their family statement about being shocked and tight knit is THE SAME kind of manipulative jargon MY family would say if called out on their behavior… It’s like they think if they stick to the script and are adamant long enough…people will believe them NOPE. Oh government education? In America? That is overblown and misunderstood. Government helps set curriculum and maybe mistakes have been made but having gone to public school in America during 90s and 2000s, there was nothing like government implemented curriculum. We weren't brain washed lol anymore than you were at your school. University/colleges etc, do have an overwhelmingly liberal presence on campuses and that can stifle debate and that is where parents see kids go off to University and come back with all these new crazy political stances. And, government have zero to do with University curriculum and its the woke warriors that are shaming kids into a cult like political group, kids are accepting coerced speech via pronouns, as if that's not self absorbed attack on others freedom. Of speech and freedoms in general

I just watched 'toy soldiers' on DVD, that I may add, obtained the copy online straight from a warehouse in South Korea. I am a veteran, and I've seen quite alot of reviews that said this movie was a flop. For me, 'i don't think so.' One of the best, and well-written movie scripts of the early 90's. The cast was incredible. Even the young actors chosen for the parts were incredible. Just superb. And, for Mr. Wheaton, whom I think was a great addition to Hollywood, and very talented, I would just like to say ' Thank you.' Its one of my favorite movies to watch. For Mr. Gossett, just an extraordinary performance, along with the late Mr. Ermey. Such skill and talent. As a veteran of the armed forces, I get teary-eyed in a great way to watch such an action-packed film about what can happen when foreigners press the wrong buttons on America. Again, thank all of you, including you, Mr. Wheaton, for such a great film of the time.

And this is basically the same sort of story that Britney Spears has except that her parents were much more controlling and legally armed. Girls and young women burn out in this industry and you rarely see them after 25, not simply because beauty fades with lost youth but because only the most dedicated young women with a solid emotional support system see any upside to sticking with a stardom digestion machine that will eat you alive. Will didn't have to worry about losing millions in acting contracts and it was very wise for him to bail on Hollywood and his toxic family.

Abuse is abuse and apologies don't have excuses. I hope Will makes it through the anger phase. I hope, in the end, Will is able to express his anger and sadness with his parents. There is some abuse that is unforgivable. There are some parents that are unapologetic and committed worse abuse. Sometimes you need to forgive the people that hurt you. Not for them. For you. Letting go, admitting some people fail at life and they never accept responsibility is a long hard road. I hope Will finds a good therapist because in the end, as hard as it is, we must find a way to forgive everyone everything and just move on. Let the hate and anger go.

I’ve recently listened to a couple of his interviews (quite by accident) and he seems to have held his parents responsible for not knowing how he interpreted things. He wanted to be like other kids but his parents gave him the opportunity to be a regular character on Star Trek, an experience that any other kid would have loved. He complained about being in LA traffic to get to the set but one of his parents had to be in traffic too. He said that his father didn’t credit him enough for being one of the most famous actors on the planet. What exactly did he want his father to do? He said that his father loved his siblings but not him. Why would his father be emotionally abusive just to him? And he has cut his parents out of his life when they obviously don’t know why. Being a child star isn’t easy. It’s possible that he may have developed a narcissistic personality disorder and nobody knew it so it never got addressed. He needs counseling with the hope that he can one day reconcile with his parents, who he may have misunderstood.

That's terrible. Most of us kids were forced to mow lawns, paint the house, do the laundry, sweep, dust, go to school/do homework and anything else required by our parents. I guess everyone has a different type of hell. Some of us get over it. Some just whine.

He had to do all that AND act AND support his family. His parents stole his money too. He talks about how, in his 20s after he got married and he was broker than broke after leaving acting for a while, he was actually still getting hefty residual cheques from his previous work. His parents were stealing from him the whole time.

I have heard that when someone remembers things, the memories change a tiny bit each time they come back into your mind. I absolutely believe that he had some terrible childhood experiences but I wonder if, because of his anger, not all things were what they seemed? He seems like a very angry and bitter person.

That part about kids making irrevocable choices made me want to find out what he thinks of "protecting trans kids".
