Hi Matt, thank you very much for your video. We love to see it, because we belong to the german guys who designed the leveling device. And indeed (@Stefan), if you have to explain the complex function with only a few words, it was well done. There is only one thing, we would like to add: Of course we are glad to hear that you like the riding comfort of this suspension, but please be aware, that it’s main advantage can be found when riding with load and/or two persons. According to the higher weight, springing is a little bit stiffer than and the levelling prevents the suspension from hitting the bump-stops. Try it! Have a merry Christmas Burkhard, Bernd and Norbert

Have a 2017 Street Glide Special that gets a lot of compliments everywhere I go, even get videoed riding down the highway and is a downright nice/clean bike. I was so fed up with the ride performance, I was ready to trade it in for a Ultra or Road Glide Limited. I didn't care how it looked, I was done with the ride even after buying a Sundowner seat. A fellow suggested to switch out the rear shocks, then I started researching which steered me toward the Legend brand and after watching videos from Matt Laidlaw & other VLoggers in which Legend wasn't a sponsor, I decided to try the Legend Revo-A coil overs out. Right after the install, I did a 800 mile trip riding through the Arkansas Ozarks, state highways and interstates; including low temps and heavy rain. Conclusion is these shocks are awesome! Just feels planted in curves and soaks up the road bumps. I don't cringe anymore to expect what it's going to feel like when hitting a pothole or bump. Wish I had done it right after purchasing the bike. It's a total different bike now and will keep it for a few more years. I may change out the front at my 50,000 maintenance but factory front works well. No matter what make/brand of rear shocks you go with, the higher-priced get far better reviews and I researched thoroughly, so don't go cheap because it seems you will waste money buying less expensive shocks in the $200-$400 range. You can't go wrong switching out the rear shocks with a higher-end aftermarket if you are going to be putting miles on the bike and riding a lot of curves. Also, I test rode all the 2019 Indian models and they have the same feel as the factory Harley's so I ain't buying into the comments Indian's have better factory shocks. It was suggested to run with 13" due to my riding style of riding in the curves and long distances. I am 5'7" and can flatfoot with no problem (again, have a Sundowner seat as well).

I hate to say this but 2009 BMW has a technology that allows the rider with the push of a button to adjust the ride quality and also allows you to change it when you go 2 up. Sooner or later The Motor Company has GOT to get on board with that technology. I would think that a "premium motorcycle" like Harley Davidson is would have incorporated this into their bikes by now, in typical fashion they're likely to do so in another 20 years. I've been riding Harley Davidsons my entire life yet when I bought the BMW to be utilized as a commuter bike it really impressed me AND IM NOT EASILY IMPRESSED!

I ride HD for 25 Years and I wholeheartedly agree with you. I get annoyed thinking how much I paid for my Harley and now have to kick out another 1500+ dollars to get the suspension comfortable for me. @@grendelprime166 thanks for sharing. I'm not some kind of "troll" or nothin like that and I don't badger Harley Davidson but I'm just in awe about how slow they are when it comes to advancing in their technology. Other competitors are lightyears ahead of them yet they prefer to use the "sameo sameo" design. I know several people who want a trike but refuse to buy one due to the fact that the rear axle is STILL a strait axle design and not independent rear suspension. The aftermarket world is KILLING it with independent rear suspension kits for bikes and The Motor Company is CLUELESS! Just one more thing that'll happen in another 20 years I recon....

I totally agree with you. The main reason I have not purchased a street Glide is because of the limited suspension travel and low height and lean angle. I keep waiting for the motor company to improve these year after year but it doesn't happen. So I still didn't buy the street Glide. They could offer it as a option at least.

@@kennethwise7108 They are and they are not. This year they released the livewire which is ridiculously expensive but a really fun and powerful bike with a lot of amazing features. Then there's their adventure bike and sporty naked road bike next year which are chock full of tech. I believe Harley's plan is to push these changes forward and start working that tech into their more traditional bikes. They just rolled out Traction controls in their baggers this year and I expect more advances in the years to come. I didn't read your comment as trolling, it's a sober observation and one I share myself. I hope the new Indians bite enough of their sales to force them to innovate in order to compete.

I have Wilbur's shocks on my Triumph. It took a little seat time to break them in. They were a little stiff at first. They are pretty good now one or two up if I dial up the preload. Still not as good as a mono shock, but it's comfy enough and I can ride it hard in the corners without upsetting the chassis. On the HD, I'm not sure. From what that guy said, it sounds like they are increasing the compression damping based on sensing the additional passenger weight. That's probably a better way of dealing with it than only increasing the preload (which simply compresses the springs). The additional weight will compress the spring anyway. Increasing the compression damping will help keep the shortened travel from bottoming. Increasing the rebound damping will keep it from pogoing around as the shock extends. It all sounds great. The downside is that when you set the spring preload on a conventional shock, it increases the ride height so you aren't scraping pegs at lower cornering speeds. As you don't increase the ride height with these, I'm afraid you'll be doomed to scrape easier with a passenger. For a solo rider, they're probably be great and will get even better with a little breakin. I'll probably stick with the stock shocks for now. I'm sure there are more plush shocks out there, but these get the job done. My Airhawk seat pad probably doesn't hurt the process any either..

Does Your Triumph have the Wilbers LDC system? Only the LDC is self adjusting. The right shock is doing the basic "shockwork" and is then supported by the left LDC shock to adapt to different loads.
@saddle8bag
@saddle8bag 4 жыл бұрын
@@stefansgarage3014 It doesn't. My Triumph just has a Wilbur's touring suspension. It uses the old fashioned way of increasing the preload/ride height to deal with heavier loads. I based my pros and cons of this LDC system on what I heard in this video. If that LDC system can change the ride height by changing the damping fluid reservoirs, then I stand corrected. My guess is that with heavier load, the LDC switches to a hydraulic circuit with thicker fluid or different dampers. Neither would affect the ride height.
@saddle8bag
@saddle8bag 4 жыл бұрын
@@stefansgarage3014 There is a way you guys could test this. May make an entertaining video too. 1. Set the proper with Matt alone on the bike with Wilburs. Measure the seat height with him on it. 2. Get one of the stout fellows at the shop to sit behind Matt and retake seat height measurement on the Wilburs bike. 3. Set the proper sag with Matt alone on a bike with say Legend shocks that are set up properly for his weight. Measure the seat height. 4. Increase the preload/ride height of the Legends for the additional load of the stout guy. Get the boys both on the Legends bike and retake seat height measurement on the Legends bike. If the seat heights are about the same, then Wilburs added magic fluid and its no worry going with that one. I'll go out on a limb and bet the seat on the Legends with be considerably higher. That means the chassis is riding higher off the wheels so the floorboards are going to be higher too. In fact, you could just measure the floorboard height in place of the seat height in this experiment.

The shock length is the same as the std Harley setup, so the Specials get a little higher. As the LDC extends during riding, you have a tiny bit more lean angle and if you are a short rider, a little more seat height during initial stop, which needs to be considered.

What model year? Every aftermarket suspension will be a huge upgrade. If you are doing one and two up riding, go for the Wilbers. You don't need to remove (both) saddlebags to dial in the preload. Once correctly installed, the Wilbers needs no adjustments anymore and always has the perfect ride (well after 500 yards...). Guess what happened to the suspension on the demo bike...

On the Specials/CVO You get 20mm more suspension travel-maintained with load. Normally the left shock is doing the extra work for wife and load. But if the load is out of the ordinary, You will get a stiffer spring rate for the right shock, therefore they need to know the weight Maybe You could blame the helmet and the leather jacket...

@stefansgarage3014
@stefansgarage3014 3 жыл бұрын
Not a problem, You can redo the initial sag adjustment with the provided tool. It is only a problem, if You loose significant weight, if You gain, the system will take care of it, like when having the bags loaded or taking a passenger. If You sell the bike and the new customer is far away from Your weight, You can get a stiffer/softer right spring for the new base setting, can be changed without a spring compressor. The whole Laidlaws crew tested the bike (from Nick to Andrew) without changing the setting, so it has a high tolerance.

I looked at their site and honestly it seems like an overpriced system and old tech (only one side has spring front and rear) if you compare to the legends or Öhlins that also seem to have a lot more options. I'd rather spend a bit more to get legend fork cartridges and rear with separate reservoir. However, from some reviews I've seen these are a great upgrade. So cost effective it seems to me to be worth it for some people.

Matt we watch a lot of your videos and we really enjoy them. My wife rides a 2018 Freewheeler and I have a 2020 Street Glide stage 2. We live close to Park City, Utah and we like to ride in the mountains and on the freeways. Almost always solo. We are in our 60's and we are not aggressive riders. I am 5'10" and 170 lbs.. We have been looking at suspensions. We both experience sore lower backs after long rides. We have back rests and upgraded our seats. I am now, considering replacing our shock to see if that will help. Right now we are considering replacing the rear shocks. I really like what I have heard about the Legend Revo and Revo A's in 13 inch. I have looked at the Pro-Action 14" for my wife's Freewheeler. I also like the RS-1 but they are a little expensive and so are the Wilbers. What would you suggest? Thank you in advance for any advise you can share and for your time.
@MattLaidlaw
@MattLaidlaw 2 жыл бұрын
The Wilbers is what I ride with and swear by. It’s expensive but worth it. A rider back rest does a lot too but it sounds like you already have one. Going to the taller shock that you mentioned for the freewheel should help. Again if you don’t have a rider back rest for your wife already then I would get that with a more padded seat. For your street glide if you don’t do the Wilber’s then the Russ Wernimont RS1 is a good choice.

The stock stuff works fine here as well. My channel highlights a lot of the best accessories and add-ons money can buy. You don’t necessarily need it but if you’re looking for even better then I can point you in the right direction. The seat height is a lot taller on the FJR as well. H-D has their seats relatively low therefor reducing the amount of travel they have to work with. It allows for more people to be able to fit the bike and achieve a more lowered profile.

If HD put the most expensive, cutting edge suspension on their bikes, people would still complain that it wasn't good enough, or that it drove up the price and that Harley should put cheaper suspension on their bikes and let the buyer decide if he or she wants to spend more money for more expensive technology and upgrades. It's as quiet as a sewing machine.. I have won every Red light Drag race I have been against with Harleys .. Yesterday I went to the Local Power Sports Dealer to look at a 2005 Yamaha V-Max with 23,000 miles for $4,000.00 but it was already sold .. Low re-sale value is not always a bad thing.. I bought a 1984 Yamaha RZ-350 in 1992 it has doubled in value since I bought it if you don't count inflation .. Even my 350 CC two stroke Yamaha has smoked every HD I have gone up against and if the roads have any curves I leave them in my mirrors.. For some Reason driving a couch on two wheels down the Highway just does not appeal to me.. The Real reason I don't like HD is because they always cried to the AMA and got the rules changed to handicap ever other brands.. When I was 16 years old I worked at a bike shop that repaired British Bikes . If I was to buy a classic it would be a Triumph or a Yamaha 650 ect.. something that has decent handling .. characterizes.. Also I have never bought a $40.00 T-shirt with an HD Logo to try and be cool . Happy Holidays ..

@@MattLaidlaw P.S. one thing about hitting the Deer on a Yamaha the parts cost less than half what HD parts cost I assume .. I did not price them .. I did price front forks for an Indian FTR-1200 which I also like a lot .. and they were way more expensive but way higher quality component too .. That is one bad thing about My FZ-07 front forks not very good had to spend $800 on an Ohlin's adjustable front cartridge kit ..to Improve them with Adjustable Pre Load compression and rebound dampening..

@@MattLaidlaw Yamaha did upgrade the forks to inverted forks and the Tracer 700 . with adjustable dampening.. I don't think available in the USA but the Tracer 900 is .. that's what I should have bought but it was not available until 2018 in the USA

@@mikeskidmore6754 Not everyone cares about winning red light drag races. You have come into the evaluation of these bikes with the incorrect perspective. I want fit and finish, character, aesthetic and comfort out of a 800 pound bike like a street glide. I don't care if a Yamaha can beat me in a drag race, I have my track bike for going fast.
