You should do the live version oh and the one they did in 2007 Celebration event. It was the last time they got together John Bonham’s son Jason played drums. He plays just like his dad it’s freaky how much he plays like dad. Also the guys are older late 50’s early 60’s maybe and they freaking captivated me all over again. Led Zep is still the best band of the 70’s. Kashmir is a masterpiece! There was no violin it’s Jonsey on keyboards and Jimmy and his masterful guitar playing🥰

Zep is at the top (along with the Beatles & The Beach Boys) when it comes to pushing the limits of recording/production that was available at the time! All of the legendary early guitar players were constantly modifying their guitars & amps to get the sound they wanted because the equipment was designed to sound clean, not overdriven and distorted. I remember getting a Vox Super Beatle amp when I was 16 (1974) that was several years old thinking I would get that dirty sound. Fortunately my dad knew how to modify it!

It's funny Chod that you mention Janis Joplin, because in that live performance of "Ball and Chain" at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival she does a thing with her voice in one part of the song that Robert Plant is known for, And Led Zepplin didn't form until 1969 I believe. Up until then, Robert Plant was basically an unknown. That tells me that he may have heard Joplin and probably copied some of her singing chops. I wouldn't be surprised anyway

The sounds comes from a keyboard and 1/2 step progression on the guitar. But instead of standard tuning of the strings (EADGBE) the guitar is tuned to GADDAG. Once you switch the tuning and play it, you get the sound even without the keyboard backing. I can play this song , but I’ve never played it at a gig. This song sounds right only if Robert Plant is singing. Alice In Chains does a decent cover backed by an entire orchestra. It’s on KZfaq. Search “Alice in Chains Kashmir” However, it still lack’s Plant’s vocals.

I always thought a cello, or synth mimicking a cello. Definitely deeper than a violin. Either way, it drives the song.

Page did not use the violin bow in this song, it was used in the song days been confused. The sound you hear all came from John Paul Jones on the synthesizer, The most underrated member of the Led Zeppelin band.
