Pearl was the second and final solo studio album by Janis. It was released on January 11, 1971, three months after her death on October 4, 1970. Mercedes Benz, on the Pearl album, was the last song she sang. She made the blues her own and no one will ever match her. So special, so talented, so sad and lost. She gave intense passion, cries of pain and ecstasy, she gave all of herself when she was on stage and in her life. She will forever be in our Flower🌼Child Hearts!

As Bear78420 correctly states, Kris Kristofferson did write it for Janis. I don't think he ever recorded it, so, technically, it's not a cover. And of the all the versions (cover or not) of this song, Janis does the best.

It was priceless to see your reaction to one of my favorite songs sung by a woman who always sounded like she was sharing her innermost soul with her audience. There really is nobody to compare her to because she was so incredibly unique. That era had such raw, pure talent as was stated without being computerized. Karen Carpenter, Judith Durham of The Seekers, Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand, and so many more, but Joplin was in a league of her own. Patsy Klein was another phenomenal voice.

I want to second the suggestion to listen/watch Beth Hart live in Amsterdam “I’d Rather Be Blind”. Only current singer I know who can rival Janis. She is joined by Joe Bonamassa, one of the greatest living guitarists. Although highly respected and known, neither have the level of fame that they deserve. perhaps that’s just a sign of the times...the music world is so fractured by social media that stars no longer become household names....But both of these artists deserve to be.

The difference back in the late sixties and into the seventies, among artist there was no competition, in fact it was quite normal to see these artists at each others shows and hanging out backstage. They were all in this musical family and they would tell you that "who's the best" talk is all from the record companies trying to sell more records. Yes they wanted to be successful and mostly tour and perform but the artist could care less if they were better or not as good as the next band. It was all about variety and each artist had their unique sound that other artists can appreciate.

Janis was quintessential 60s and considered psychedelic blues. She was amazing and so very special. She always sang from her heart and was "bullied" for her sound, her attitude, her look. Would love to hear more Janis. Definitely Ball and Chain, Live at Monterey Pop. Mama Cass, from the Mamas and Papas, was in the audience. Some other songs that I love...(so many more) Piece of My Heart...this song made her a star⭐ Move Over Cry Baby Turtle Blues...nasty good! Summertime Maybe To Love Somebody Mercedes Benz...this was the last song she sang. She died 3 days later.

It was an amazing time. I certainly took the music for granted. I never thought for one minute it would ever end, then it did. But, my love for the music never did. I have been listening to this music since high school 51 years ago. When Disco hit, then Punk, then Grunge, I tossed my radio and became a music recluse until it's resurgence with classic rock. I'm really enjoying watching your reactions and seeing the appreciation for what is truly a Golden Age in music. I no longer take it for granted and I thank GOD every day for such a blessed life.

Firstly, she was bullied in Texas which is where she grew up. She was loved when she entered the San Fransisco music scene because the other musicians knew how talented she was. I just found your channel yesterday and I've gone through it (almost all of it). It seems you have missed some of the great rock bands. The Allman Brothers Band is a necessary band for you to listen to. From "Live At the Flilmore East" Whipping Post, Stormy Monday, One Way Out, Trouble No More or really anything from that live album. They were a phenomenal Rock/Blues band. I haven't seen Crosby, Stills, Nash (and sometimes Young). From the album "CSN" I recommend Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Wooden Ships,, Long Time Gone or Southern Cross. I haven't seen Eric Clapton either solo or any of his bands like Blind Faith, Cream, The Yardbirds or Derick and the Dominos. He is an amazing rock/blues guitarist. Oh, and you should react to Santana's Soul Sacrifice from Woodstock. Another great band is "The Band" They were the backup band for Bob Dylan for a while. From the movie "The Last Waltz" (their last concert) You might enjoy: The Weight, The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down, Up on Cripple Creek or I Shall be Released. This is long but I need to give you some bands with female leads. The Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde), The Eurythmics (Annie Lennox), Alanis Morissette, Patti Smith, Kate Bush, Carole King, Tracy Chapman, Natalie Merchant and oh so many more. The real beginnings of rock music came from Sister Rosseta Tharpe who played a mean guitar in the 1930s and 40s.Thanks for reading. (I hope you do).

And they all do it! So thanks for that. Love your intelligent and heartfelt reaction to my beloved Janis. I was a huge fan of hers when she was alive and I was a teenager and I'm still a huge fan. She did break ground for other female singers and she was definitely the first female rock superstar. She was indeed mocked and ridiculed when she was young. She also stood up for African Americans in school and they called her very ugly names because of it. This is all factual. She was always for the underdog. Anyway, so glad you like Janis and hope you check out more of her stuff.

The record charts started back in 1959. There were so many great songs and artists during the 60's, and 70's that did not make it to the top of the charts: example Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven only made it to number 22. The music styles were evolving quickly during those 2 decades and bands like Led Zeppelin were ahead of their time. Mainstream radio played mostly songs less than 4 minutes long, so exposure to alot of these songs was slower.

Janis Joplin, there is so much that could be said about Janis but dull is definitely not one of them. I’ll go ahead and say this, she is and forever more will be the greatest female vocalist of all time ! My opinion. She sang with her entire body, the emotion was so real in her. She was bullied so bad about her looks from childhood on in to college where she was voted the ugliest man on campus. You really should check out her songs, Cry Baby, Piece of my Heart, Summertime which you’ll love because it really shows off her bluesy voice to perfection. And definitely at the Monterey Pop Festival, Ball and Chain... what a missed talent.

My husband saw her live just once in Toronto Canada July 4th weekend on the first leg of the Festival Express tour. He said until that time, he never "got" her. After that weekend he did. She was dead a few months later. The whole concert tour movie is on KZfaq I think. She's amazing throuhout. I've always loved her. You can't go wrong with anything of hers really, though some performances are better than others depending on how out-there she was. My 10th grade math teacher put this song on a mix tape for me. I always think of her as the non-opera Maria Callas.

Excellent example of how a lame country song morphed into a rock/blues song early on rock history. It's amazing what truly talented musicians and a great blues vocalist can do!!! Thank you!

I'm reading the other comments about Kris Kristoferson, and that man has been around for a long time. I know I've heard him sing something, but I can't remember. I've seen him in movies and now I found out he wrote this song.

That’s so the truth ! You either had or you didn’t. These musicians had to walk on stage plug their amps in make sure the mics were turned on and go to work.

Kris Kristopherson was an amazing songwriter, lines like 'windshield wiper, slappin time' 'freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose', 'I would trade all my tomorrows, for a single yesterday'. Kris dated Janis. It was not until after she died, he learned that she had recorded this song. This song, by then, was a standard. You heard it in every bar, at every campfire. Janis, made it her own. Janis did not write songs, she sang them in he own unique style. Every song she did, he did her way. When they clicked, as often they did, they became Janis Joplin songs. The only other person, at that time, who did that so consistently was Joe Cocker. In an earlier era, all hits were done by singers doing the songs of gifted songwriters. Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. Elvis was one of the final masters of that craft and he was the connecting piece between what was and what was coming.
