Weve got 1500 wild boars within municipal area of Krakow, Poland as of 2023. No problem at all. Get em back in the UK together with beavers, otters, bisom and wolfs!

Like deer, without an effective predator, the wild boar population will grow until it becomes destructive. It would be best if you introduced the needed predation for wilding to work.

We are very privileged to be able to bring them back to our landscapes at all. We were (are) very good at wiping out wildlife on our island, if it wasn't for refugia populations in mainland Europe, many of the species we are now bringing back would be gone forever.

It’s great that the Wild Boar is back, they are very much a keystone species, their rooting activities stimulating natural regeneration of trees, and providing niches for ephemeral flora. Also isn’t it just nice to have some Big Wildlife ! If we have to introduce some degree of control once populations increase without any natural predators then so be it, as well as being a truly iconic species, they also taste fantastic ! Bring on the boar !

Superb video! Very well presented, informative and balanced. You asked for feedback:- 1st, We must always remind people that the UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world's. We have eradicated all our top predators centuries ago. We continue to attack our wildlife in the form of badgers, beaver etc etc. Our land owners as a whole are totally intolerant of wildlife. It is so pleasing to witness a growing exception to this, in estates led by Knepp Estate. 2nd when people complain about wildlife, such as wild boar uprooted gardens defending their young against dogs, or in the case of beavers, doing what they naturally do, make dams and diverting streams. Ask ourselves what it is like to have a herd of elephants in your garden destroying your crops as in Africa or India. Just imagine what is it like living on the edge of a tiger park in India. Tigers not only take your domestic buffalo and cattle by do on occasions actually eat people, as I learnt from our naturalist guide on our recent trip to that country. We in Britain need to be more tolerant and recognise we are all richer having wildlife in our world. 3rd Ask yourself who is producing the greatest destruction to our world? Not wildlife, yes it is humans who are responsible for destroying the forests at an alarming rate, polluting the planet, using up earth natural resources. On the bright side of this, there is a growing band of humans who are fighting for the world's wildlife, such as your selves in your small way. My wife and I never give money to human charities. Even BBC programs that are about wildlife do not support wildlife with their fund raising campaigns. Sadly the lot of wildlife on this planet is not recognised by the vast majority. As I replied to an original post by Chris McCartney, having a sustainable harvest of these wild creatures and encouraging the public to dine on them will not just keep their numbers at manageable levels, but will, also, turn them into an economic asset. That will build up support for their presence. Hunters will profit as will the butchers who sell the hunters' harvest. Another important aspect of this is for people to be educated in the proper preparation of venison and other wild meats. Anyone who has eaten game knows that it can be, well, gamey. Soaking in brines and marinades such as milk, buttermilk and vinegar is ofttimes essential. Then many of these meats do well when cooked with strong spices and flavourings from wine to chili to curry and so on. Properly approached, these limited rewilding projects could be quite successful. The reality is that the British public is never going to tolerate packs of wolves' roaming all over the island, as well as bears' walking down their High Streets, so hunters will be the predators who keep the ecology in balance in most regions.

We'll have to see how this goes moving forward, in Germany and other European countries the Boar population needs to be reduced/hunted periodically because when it grows to very large numbers they do substantial damage to crops, etc, and on a small island like the UK that will be an issue too. In spring when they have babies they get extremely protective and aggressive if unwanted guests of any kind get too close, kids exploring the woods around this time of year should take care and know not to get too close or risk being attacked and seriously injured, Boars have tusks/teeth and know how to use them to maim you. I think this kind of rewilding initiatives are good within reason, but people need to understand that Boar populations can get out of control and may well need to be kept in check eventually, and I just hope there aren't any unfortunate injuries along the way 🤷‍♂️

Funny that the UK is trying to bring them back while in the U.S. we are trying everything we can to get rid of them. We have over half a million in Florida alone you are more than welcome to take if you like.

It's great! that the wild boar are thriving, but unless they have preditors , you will soon be overun by them!

I think maybe there were always wild boars in England but they were just very elusive and rarely seen so people believed they were extinct and they're just becoming braver and people blame it on releasing.

In some areas the population of the British wild boar needs to be controlled. That means a hunting season and a closed season. At present there is no closed season and boar can be shot at any time, thus putting pregant females and those with young at risk. We might not like it, but controlled hunting will give them better protection than they have at present.

Of course, the rewilding of Britain is a great concept. We will make mistakes and have a lot to learn. There are reasons why some animals were hunted to extinction. Reintroduction may not be a good idea in all places but recreating a balanced eco-system is an admirable ambition. However, this must be well considered without bias one way or another. It is true that 72% of Britain is agricultural, employs only 1.5% of the workforce and only 0.5% of its GDP, so theoretically could be rewilded to a greater degree. However, there are geopolitical concerns around feeding the nation together with transportation and importation costs and impacts on modern life that are realities to be factored in. With goodwill, rewilding can be achieved - with a little patience! Love to everyone who cares.

Saw a dead boar today next to the A5 road north of Dunstable.

I can already see this getting out of hand like it does with foxes in cities. And boars can be more devastating to farming and crops when their numbers aren’t controlled. Posing risks on the roads too

Uk was completely destroyed with Roads and industry, a bit of rewinding here and there isn't going to o much now. The rivers and soil are polluted too. Everyones on a high meat diet and plastic is oozing into every corner of society. We run on fuels that are burned. Many, many problems.

There are no protections for Wild Boar in the UK so it's entirely possible that they will be hunted to extinction all over again.

Where are their natural predators

Yes, Wild Boars in limited & controlled numbers may be beneficial to the modern British environmental in certain areas & ways, for instance in larger woodland or heathland/moorland areas but not in prime agricultural areas where there is strong stable or commercial growing crops in development! As all farmers & growers know well that ‘Sounders of wild pigs’ can uproot & destroy vast amounts (in money & produce terms!) of their commercial crops & livelihoods, examples of such prevail in the United States, Australia or New Zealand where such damage has occurred on a vast scale due to the absence or diminishing of known predator species that would control such vitally important ecological damage to the food production environment in those places by limiting, destructive wild/feral pig numbers & that would otherwise naturally control boars & hogs numbers there! Controlled hunting, targeted entrapment & relocation elsewhere of certain populations, &/or officially sanctioned culls to control the numbers there which would need also to be repeated in the UK 🇬🇧 & probably in Ireland too!

The positive and upbeat sentiment of this video seems very much at odds with reality. If you were to read up about the estimated numbers of wild boar in the Forest of Dean over the last few years, you will see that, far from steadily rising, the numbers have been declining steadily, since a cull started a few years ago. Down to only about 90 odd left I believe. A few years ago, it was easy to spot them but not anymore. It certainly isn't rewilding and was never claimed to be such. Neither is it a sign of us becoming more respectful, tolerant or understanding of the world we share with all its various beautiful occupants. It's more just humans doing what we always do, reasserting ourselves as the undisputable champions of nature and everything. These dirty pigs, make a mess and look a bit scary to boot!

Wild Boar are Prolific breeders. If they are already causing trouble now, hold on to your hat. I really wonder how much land is available for the different species that are being introduced. It is a nice idea but these animals are going to expand in numbers. Groups will split and expand again. Is there really enough space? One other thing, I would caution Conservationists on introducing wolves.

And excuse me for this, but humans claiming their “private lawns” have been destroyed. Not only is that absolutely insulting to the animals whose habitats we actually HAVE destroyed for our “private lawns” but the pigs are doing EXACTLY as they should. Breaking up the monotony of the dominant plant life, so that other species can emerge. A lawn is only a status symbol, an ugly and ecologically harmful one at that, and instead of complaining I would recommend that homeowner either stay and watch what amazing native plants emerge from the disturbed soil, or even sow the seeds over the bare soil themselves and watch the flowers grow. We as humans need to grow up, and stop trying to dominate what is around us. Learn to live WITH nature and not opposed to her.

And we should eating them and the bloody deer and why go to the Organic Counter and Pay Extra instead eat what lives outside free from antibiotics.... We could also eat the Red Signal Crayfish to keep this invader at bay we also have Red Sitka Fallow Roe Reeves Muntjac and Chinese Deer All very tasty it appears.. then we could support Knepp who reminded bt going back to old farming practices and old breeds and who's area is Now a Garden of Eden... And supply meat from traditionally farmed Old English Longhorn Beef thus killing two birds with one stone.. 1 High Quality Meat 2 Raised in the old much less harmful way...
