Over the past few months there has been a surge in interest in the outdoors and in particular wild camping. This has brought about it's own problems with the so called 'fly-camper' camping irresponsibly and leaving their mess and rubbish behind.
I decided that instead of moaning, I would be proactive and help to provide some insight into how I camp, some of the gear that I use and some of the choices that I make. Hopefully this will help to provide some information for anyone looking at doing their first wild camp.

Take an extra rubbish bag and take some of what others have left. I always keep a bin liner with me, in the car etc and if I see rubbish I collect it. I want to keep the environment clear and even though I’d rather it be taken away by the person who left it, I’m not going to leave it there just because it wasn’t me.

I haven't camped for few years and before that, decades. Watching this video made me realized why camping is so satisfying. 1. Its a series of small victories of enjoying great inexpensive equipment that you proved to work. 2. Finding a place to camp that deeply fulfills what you need. 2. Leaving a place in most cases, better than you found it. All to ensures a successful time. It all works because you planed it that way. Thats why camping can be so great, you executed a simple plan. Its very satisfying, and there is reason why you do everthing.

I have had my first wild camping on 1st of January this year (2021), I never thought of doing it, but when then lockdowns kicked in, people began to get scared of meeting each other... I was looking for something I could do on my own, and lo behold, wild camping KZfaq channels began to pop up. At first these were American and Canadian channels but then I was wondering if its actually popular in the UK, and here I am I have found quite few of them, including yours. So when I did my first ever wild camping, I went to a nearby forest, did 3 hours scouting and I was shocked how much rubbish I found while searching for the best spot. There was even a half buried damaged tent, plastic and glass bottles, plastic containers, some plastic bags filled with something that I wasn't keen to open any of those, who knows what was inside and how long these plastic bags were there. I brought with me few rubbish bags to make sure I take the rubbish back with me, it is upsetting to see that people don't care to clean after themselves, making people think that all the "wild campers" are like that, shame on you.

Lovely review and a very clear message. Since lockdown l've seen many more people wild camping and while most are responsible, a minority aren't and this will only provoke landowners and the authorities to clamp down. Education is the way forward and l hope many more people watch this video. We'll done.

For groundcloth, i just bring a small 1x1,45m 210T (23,3D) polyester tarp i got for $5 on ebay. It weighs 95g, packs down to the size of a wallet, and is big enough to cover the main area im sitting or laying down on. Not as strong as regular ground cloths, but im careful about where i put up my tent anyway, and probably dont even need it. It can also be used as a "rain-skirt", quick shelter for rain/sun/wind, or "picknic blanket" for food and other stuff i dont want to get dirty. Pretty versatile for such a cheap and small thing :P

Awesome Video mate. If you make another one it would be awesome if you would also talk about going to the "toilet" in the outdoors. (staying away from water, digging a deep enough cat hole, and packing out toilet-paper if the local climate requires it) in more popular areas this starts to be a real problem, and a lot of newer backpackers are not aware of this.

Excellent video fella! I did my first wild camp back in September on Cadair Idris, Snowdonia. I've been spending majority of my life outdoors and in recent years doing landscape, astro and wildlife photography. But I made the decision this year to include some wild camping in those adventures, and honestly, I've never been happier! It's such an awesome thing to be able to do. Our pack seems to be quite similar, albeit mines likely heavier with the camera gear I carry about. But apart from that I think they're very similar indeed. Brilliant video mate, look forward to catching more in the future.

The forest beckons us, fills our thoughts. You can't stay at home anymore! You literally rip your jacket and backpack off the rack. You go on a journey where there are no people, and nature is especially beautiful. The smell of last year's wet needles and leaves is carried by warm air, which permeates you with a strong stream. You cannot get enough of it. The forest accepts us as we are. We are his guests, not his hosts. And we are grateful to him. How can it be boring for someone in this world to look at a drawing of veins on a green leaf for several hours?

Hi. New to your channel and just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to encourage and promote Leave No Trace principles. I don’t know if it’s just me but there seems to be a proliferation on KZfaq of people filming themselves walking and wild camping or whatever but only a few of them actually take the time and effort to talk about it. There are lots and lots of comments from people saying they’ve been inspired to go wild camping as a result of the videos they’ve just watched but I am torn: on the one hand it’s great that people are taking exercise, enjoying fresh air, doing something new etc but on the other hand I’m concerned that with ever greater numbers going to the same spots they see on the videos that the impact will be detrimental to us all in the long term. Inconsiderate parking, rubbish, fire pits leaving unsightly marks on the ground and the increase risk of wildfires, human excrement and tissue paper left everywhere, damage to property and the negative impact on the environment due to erosion of footpaths etc may see landowners, authorities etc press for greater restrictions and outright bans on the things we love to do. There is proposed legislation going through Home Office consultation at the moment to criminalise trespass which may incorporate wild campers although not the intended target of the proposed legislation. The COVID situation has encouraged the increase of “fly camping” which is totally not the same as responsible wild camping but the press and the general public seem to conflate the two adding fuel to the fire. So again I thank you for encouraging individual responsibility and making the effort to educate and inform.

It pains me to see my local forests and side roads littered. It’s become so much worse over the years and they even started removing campsites because people trash the place. I like going no less than about 25 miles into national forrest anytime I camp.

I've been looking for a better pad for sleeping. I've been using a Therm-a-Rest for years, but it's only 5 cm thick on a good day, and since I'm heavier than the average hiker, it's not been particularly comfortable. The Trekology one looks great, and price is far below what I was expecting to pay. Thanks!

Just placed my order. If it's not comfortable, I'm holding you personally responsible! Just kidding! I'm excited, actually, and my back feels better already.

I’ve just got one as well. I’m wondering how essential is the foam roller mat underneath for insulation? Are you using something like this?
@scottplumer3668
@scottplumer3668 2 жыл бұрын
@@alexgirlan9542 I haven't used it camping yet, but I suspect since it's just an air mattress with no foam inside, the R-value is pretty bad (I don't know if high or low R-values are good). So I suspect you just need some extra insulation from the ground in cold weather. It is definitely comfortable. I tried it out on my concrete patio and I was totally comfortable. I weigh about 245, so I need a fairly thick pad or my hips and shoulders (side sleeper) will be on the ground. This fits the bill. I'll report back after I go camping next month.
@danielhendry8376
@danielhendry8376 2 жыл бұрын
@@scottplumer3668 it’s only like 1.6 R rating which is bad another mat underneath would be a must for anything below 10 degrees tbh

Tbf this was perfect. Im thinking about starting to build some kit to start wild camping next year. Most of the other similar videos involve expensive branded kit and lots of unnecessary items. This video was clear, to the point and shows that expensive kit is only a personal choice not a necessity. A thumbs up from me 👍

Having a tent that is easy to put up and pack away can greatly improve camping/trekking experience. I'd recommend that anyone do their research and before buying a tent try putting it up in the shop to see how hard it is, especially important if you're a solo camper
