Yes, you can have fun wild camping in heavy rain! You just need the right camping gear and a positive mindset. I used my new Naturehike Opalus 2 tent to go camping in heavy rain. This is a 2 person tunnel tent with large porch making it ideal for camping in the rain. There is lots of space inside to keep you out of the wind and rain which makes the wild camp more enjoyable.
When wild camping in the rain you must stay dry at all times. Get yourself some waterproof hiking gear that is Gore-Tex or similar. Packing your backpack the correct way is really important. I recommend using a waterproof liner and / or drybags. A waterproof backpack cover is a good idea too. Make sure your tent and waterproofs are easily accessible.
Earplugs are essential and take something to keep you busy when wild camping in the rain because you'll be spending a lot of your time in your tent. Try to buy a tent that is a reasonable size, it must be a size that makes you comfortable e.g so you can sit up in your tent.
I've had to edit out a lot of the rain noise as some parts were unwatchable, the rain really was that bad!
This is some of the backpacking gear I used.

Hi Andy. Sod’s law. Go camping, it rains. Good tent though, nice bit of room. Tell me. How much did that and all your gear weigh in your pack? Off wild camping this weekend, first of many. Regards
@BackpackingUK
@BackpackingUK 2 жыл бұрын
The tent has a smaller pack size and weighs less than you may think. My Hilleberg Soulo is bigger and heavier! The Opalus 2 weighs approx 2164grams including all accessories and ground sheet and has a pack size of 52cm x 18cm. This time of year my pack weighs approx 15kg inc water.

@@BackpackingUK Thanks for the reply Andy. Yes, my pack is around that. I was just wondering if I was carrying too much weight, but it is just coming out of winter, so all my gear is beefed up for the cold. Regards.

Personally, I think you're making the right decision. Give it another month and I'd say it's safe to reduce weight and pick lighter, better weather gear.

Thanks for the review. My wife and bought the Opalus 3 for the extra space, added height and the extra door. It's been a game changer for us. Loads of storage but importantly plenty of room to be able cook inside when it's raining. We use it for cycle camping. Really came into its own when we had three days of fairly solid rain in the Lake District last summer. We keep the footprint attached and pitch it all in one go. Really easy and quick to pitch. We can even get our tandem split in two in the porch area.

I know what you mean about quite liking camping in the rain (though sod the wind). For me it's that feeling of triumph over adversity - when you're sorted, warm and dry, hot drink in hand, and it's chucking it down outside. Must admit, I enjoy feeling a bit smug too! Love the way the subtitles interpret the rain as, " [Applause] "!

Great video, looking forward to use my opalus 3 soon. One word of advice don't use your breath to inflate the bag that inflates your sleeping mat. One of the reasons for them is so you don't use your very moist breath to blow the mats up which over time can ruin the thermal interior. Just waft the opening into the air and roll

Every tent I've ever owned has been inner first, they tend to be cheaper. I understand what you're saying about rain but the simple answer is to set a tarp up first then erect the tent beneath that. It also helps if your tent leaks.

Hi there. I love your vids. Loads of good sense. Thanks for them. Your tent looks like a copy of the Lichfield Cherokee. Almost all producers have copied Lichfield at one time or another. The design is a good one for fair weather or foul. Would suggest that getting the poles ready before laying down the groundsheet in the rain might be a better policy. Their is no better music than rain on canvas if you're dry inside and you've got access to hot grub. Naturehike is a Chinese company. Sadly, a lot of so-called British tents are made there as well, Every good wish - Paul in the Midlands
