Wild Camping the East Highland Way - Part Two - Balgowan to Aviemore

Part Two of my East Highland Way trek. I did this 82 mile trek solo, wild camping (apart from one night) and carrying everything I needed over six days.
From my B&B in Balgowan I walk through forests, moorland and tackle numerous river crossings. On the way I see wild horses and deer. The weather changed from sun to rain, to snow and sleet, with temperatures down to -5 C at night.
I visit Dalnashallag bothy, wild camp at the edge of Loch Gynach, stay overnight in Drake's Bothy in Inshriach Forest, and see the castle in Loch an Eilein.
An awesome route, peaceful and remote.

What a great route Tom. I really liked how those ancient stones were incorporated into the town in a respectful way. And the Barracks looked like you could just through a roof on and move back in. Also those pics you put up at the end were beautiful. After seeing that castle in the Loch all I could think of was going for a swim and checking it out. Maybe in May instead. Nate

From Taps aff tae pishin it doon in the blink of an eye 🌤⛅🌥🌦🌧and then back to a wee bit of sunshine. The spot at 12 mins in looked amazing, what a place to wake up in. Shame that people can't take their shite away with them. There used to be loads of bothies down here in SW Scotland and arseholes managed to ruin several really good ones and get them closed.

The benches in Newtonmore are in the shape of 2 crossed Shinty sticks ( Camans) Its a huge shinty area, bloody lethal game as well. Shinty sticks are usually made of Hickory and also Ash, birch , beech or combinations. A great song by Runrig called " Clash of the Ash " give it a listen.

Beautiful sceanery out there and really informative, thanks Tom and well done. As for feet even withy drying out at the end of the day afer two days of wet fields and rainy conditions mine were tingling. Bought some sealskinz now but not yet used in anger plus I take a bit of moisuriser with me to pop on my feed at the end of the day. Do you use duct tape for hot spots ever?
@PreparedPathfinder
@PreparedPathfinder Жыл бұрын
Cheers David. Yeah Sealskin socks are great if your boots are soaked. Nothing worse than having wet feet whilst tabbing. No, l don’t use duct tape on my feet, you could in an emergency but micropore tape is much better.

Yeah nice route that. Some great shots there, deer too! Have you got more blisters since you hurt your leg, like your gait changed and it rubs more where it didn't? I watch a lot of chiropractor videos like Mondragon and they often point out foot flaring outwards etc and can often correct it or advise on physio moves to correct it. Cheers man!
@PreparedPathfinder
@PreparedPathfinder Жыл бұрын
Cheers mate. Shame l only had a GoPro as l got fairly close to the deer before they ran off, looks miles away in the footage. I haven’t had any more blisters but it has had secondary effects due to the change in gait, ie achilles and lower back pain. Walking poles help, l never used them prior to the injury.

@@PreparedPathfinder Yeah, I missed so many animals I always carry a small camcorder outdoors now, with a high zoom. I got a lot of the wildlife footage on my channel with it. 1920x1080 but with davinci studio it basically upgrades any footage and you can also upscale video with a.i. tools now. Crazy times eh haha
@PreparedPathfinder
@PreparedPathfinder Жыл бұрын
@@prometheus_beard yeah roger that! That’s what l use for editing too. Might think about that for zoom shots, what do you use?
@prometheus_beard
@prometheus_beard Жыл бұрын
@@PreparedPathfinder My exact model is "Panasonic HC-W580". There's newer variants of the HC-W580 with a bit less optical zoom at x50, wheras my older one is x59. They all have high (x3000 but it's blocky AF) digital zoom beyond that which is good if you just use it for spotting, but if for recording just stick to optical zoom and crop it in davinci.
