Part1 of 2.
The first documentary to examine the ethics and consequences of the collection of tropical fish from Amazonian rivers for the international aquarium trade.
As animal right activist groups are increasing the pressure on legislators and the pet industry to ban the capture and sale of wild tropical fish species, this film is a timely and detailed investigation into the sustainability and environmental consequences of the aquarium trade in the Amazon rainforest.
Are aquarium hobbyists who buy wild caught fish helping or hurting conservation efforts?
Can the populations of tropical fish species in Amazonas survive their repeated capture and export?
Are local communities benefiting the trade in these remote regions?
Answers to these questions are provided in this documentary by some of the worlds leading researchers, local fish capturers, exporters, international importers and conservationists. Wild Caught is essential viewing for those who wish to become educated on a controversial topic which is crucial to conservation efforts in one the worlds most important aquatic ecosystems.
The documentary was produced by Don McConnell / Amazon Microcosm.

Stunningly well done. I Have been part of the aquarium hobby 6 decades. Share this with many, discuss it with other hobbyists. I think we need to make the Discus vs Cardinal Tetra Festival a world wide event...Every fish store, Petsmart, Petco or any other chain selling fish needs to celebrate!... The one thing the video failed to get across was the decay of the hobby is do to the loss of the Ma and Pa aquarium shops, the loss of end user support by shop owners and experts...

5 decades in the hobby here and I agree with you DrFlox. There is a HUGE niche for quality local fish shops in the USA and young people seem to be completely unaware of it.

Thank you for enjoying the documentary. The loss of Ma and Pa shops is a real tragedy in all products not only in the aquarium hobby. Probably deserving of a documentary in itself.

@@jeffreyklima7612 is right, i worked at a fish shop, the store averaged $300/day revenue in late 70's. it was a 1 man operation 10 am-7pm, salary was $5/hour, had students working for most part. out of that $300 the owner had to pay salaries, electric, water bill, fish, merch, and all the tanks and shelves. it was a full time hobby, no money at all. store changed hands and finally closed. the new model is to run your shop out of your home and sell online. seems to work if you put in 12 hours a day. i saw a hair salon that had a corner of the store set up with tanks, a guy rented the space and sold mostly guppies and mollies. the hairdresser sold the fish so it really didn't have an employee, just the renter coming in to do water changes and stock the 10 tanks.

@@jeffreyklima7612 Interest in the hobby has declined greatly in the last couple decades with many small retail shops going out of business. Maybe because kids are not as interested as they once were ( cellphones ). However there is still enough of a demand for these Amazonian fish to still provide a modest living for the fish capturers along the rivers. We must support all sustainable industries in Amazonia for obvious reasons.

This documentary has completely changed my thinking about wild caught fish. Sustainability is the name of the game. I will never look at my wild caught red hook silver dollars the same way just looking at the trip they endured 14 years ago.... I also now understand why so many fish that used to be popular in the 80s and 90s have all but disappeared from local aquarium shops. Our responsibility as aquarists is to ensure we give our animals the best living conditions

@@rpliegos I raised Honduran red points15 years ago, haven't seen them since. There was a version of the pink convict in the 70s called the k o n g o that had orange, they were prominent enough to be listed in an axelrod book. 1 out of 1,000 comes out with the orange belly now and I've had three of them but have not been able to find a pair yet, they don't show their orange unless they are around the opposite sex. There were red - sailfin black Molly's that sold for 25 bucks a pair back in the early 60s, I have old tfh magazines listing them in the back ads. First fish I spawned besides convicts was purple spot gudgeons and can't find them anymore. Odd the ebb and flow, the Florida Fish farming hopefully can take some weight off the wild-caught industry with its tragic death toll

Silver dollars in piranhas have been bred in captivity, I would think that the Red Hook is breedable too. I'd be curious to know which populations are collected from the shrinking evaporating puddles, if they're doomed save them and sell them

Amazing documentary. It presents the fish trade as an ideal. But as I've worked for a fish importer, I can remind you that A LOT of fish die before you get only 1 in your aquarium. They die from transportation and maintenance. Like you would hate seeing this with your own eyes. I believe it's really worth it to share a study exposing the balance between wild caught imports, captive bred imports and local captive breeding to compare the pros and cons of the 3 approaches.

Thanks for your comment. There are some exporters that do it well here in Amazonas. But sufficient time given for quarantine before shipment is essential. It is now collecting season and there is extreme drought from the El Nino cycle.

Florida Fish farms show the most promise. I'm a indoor plant and fish enthusiast and so many plants get killed by idiots along with our fish. Being in the business like you were what is your take on more inherent healthiness of a captive bred fish vs parasite ridden death toll from traveling far? The saltwater Mandarin was successfully bred in captivity, but was told that they're no longer available because the price premium versus wildcaught which don't take to eating in captivity, it's sickening, kind of glad to see Hawaii take action to protect it's yellow tangs.

Those animal rights activists are humanizing the fish. Their priorities are displaced. The impact of human activity is inevitable. The bigger question is, how are we to control it and how are we to balance it? This documentary is an eye opener ❤️

As a guy who fishes a lot both fresh and salt in the US, I understand the importance of conservation. The only regulations they mention are "self regulations". They also didn't mention the percentage of fish that die in transport, maybe that'll be in part 2. If we learn to breed we can take the pressure off of the wild population and just dip into it for a gene pool refresh.

But that means that the local population of humans will need to find something else to feed their families, what do you suggest? Farming, mining, ranching, food fishing, all of these can have a major negative effect on the environment

@@jessterbal Someone has to speak for the fish, they can't speak for themselves they can only disappear. I don't suggest not fish collecting, I suggest regulating the fish colleting. You can also teach the locals how to breed in ponds, some already do.

It is an annual event in Barcelos. Usually on the last weekend of January. Project Piaba runs a live aboard trip there every year during the festival.

If fishing for aquarium hobbyists is sustainable then as a hobbyist myself, I am happy. However I don't buy the argument given that fishermen are inevitably fishing in a sustainable way for the reason that if they did otherwise they would not be able to live from this activity for very long. I have many examples of communities that do deplete their own living resource. Quotas are often needed.

Not sure. I have participated in this industry for decades and know of fisheries in operation for over 4 decades in the same area with government guidance, compliance and sustainability.

Thanks for watching. I understand your concern. However after about 60 years of collecting fish from Amazonas, Brazil there is no evidence ( or indication ) that any populations of fish species population has decreased. That is not saying that throughout the world the the aquarium industry must be very vigilant and ensure that collecting is done in way that is sustainable and helps conservation efforts.

Are you the type of people who believe we should all work for a single capitalist without choice, and brand it as socialism? Because socialism and communism is just capitalism with one capitalist running everything. The capitalist called government or ‘dear leader’.

If we didn't remove fish from the wild, we wouldn't have the aquarium fish we have now, also we wouldn't beable to bring back some species that are endangered if we couldn't "remove" them to breed them to put them back.

Rainforest management for harvesting ornamental fishes creates much richer ecosystems than those monoculture crop plantations! I didn't like the idea of wild-caught fishes for sale, but now I like it.

Proud to be Brazilian! This is a really well done documentary. Cardinals and Discus are also popular here in Brazil. Around here, a single Cardinal (which we call just 'Neon') costs the equivalent to less than a dollar. In our local fish stores, when Cardinals arrive it's a madness hehehehe everybody wants their share. Earlier this year when the Covid pandemic left the state of Amazonas in severe situation, Cardinal transport to other Brazilian states were very compromised. It was impossible to find them anywhere. Discus are a rather more expensive fish and less people keep them. They're also not as easy to find in smaller simple stores as Cardinals.

My school ofy Cardinal Tetras are from Brazil and have done very well with my Angelfish and Corydoras in a heavily planted 55 gallon tank. Now I can see why they like the planted tank with driftwood. Excellent video of the region and how aquarium fish can be caught sustainably by people living in the Rio Negro.

Nice and interesting. I've kept fishes really young like 9~13 of age, there's this time I had like 5 tanks it makes me happy, but i had to go abroad to work then my parents renovated the house everything was gone. I got back home around 25, done nothing till about 2018 I found myself i want to keep fish again ! I spent 3 months learning how to do aquascape, water parameters a and lot more ! Now Im 34, 3 years into aquascaping 2 tanks and going to have 3 soon ! 😂😂 Edit: I absolutely love my cardinal tetras. I have 30 in my main tank with luscious plants.

The best way is for countries based on a mathematical formula that weigh the total population with economic development to generate a green fund that is paid to Brazil each year to maintain and sustain the Amazon. That money goes to provide for the people living there to not deforest to not cut down trees or dam the water. In return they get free money to buy whatever they want. This is fair.

I lived through the 80's aquarium boom working at a large Pet Store in Michigan. I still remember the weekly shipments of fish you don't see in the fish community today, and the rare random unidentified fish included in the bags. When we think of the amazing technology we have today, we don't realize all the work and journey involved back then in bringing fish from the amazon to our aquariums across the globe. Amazing documentary to actually see the origin after all these years. Thank you

Excellent documentary. Of all of the fish brought out of the Amazon, I'd hoped to see my favorite, serrasalmus nattereri - aka, the red-bellied piranha. I've enjoyed raising them time and again, and even got a pair to spawn. The eggs never hatched, but it was still a joy to see. I've raised discus and all manner of other beautiful cichlids, but the piranha are still my favorite.

happy that you enjoyed the production. We see many red bellied and black piranhas but I haven't filmed a great underwater shot yet. Black piranha are a common food fish on the Rio Negro. When the water levels are not too low ( and they are not desperately hungry ) it is safe to swim with them.

@@MAZONMICROCOSM - I've heard that people can swim with them under the right circumstances. Just amazing. I've seen pictures of black piranha, but you don't really see them much in the aquarium trade in the U.S. Perhaps they're not legal for export? Hopefully, you can get some good shots of these sometime in the future.

Question, would this harm the impact of the biodiverse ecosystem if fish were to be harvested out of their native range? In my thoughts, wouldn't breeding them instead be more of a sustainable option?

The wild caught fish trade is an excellent source of income for locals & the pet trade. Like all crops it needs to be managed so stocks are sustainable. However most fish in the Aquarium hobby are bred in captivity. Wild fish are generally more expensive due to shipping costs which automatically limits the demand. Wild caught fish provide an extra genetic stock for captive breeding. Main threats to river ecosystems are mining & large scale agriculture not the pet trade.

I've actually done a walk through Reserva Ducke with Bill- he's an odd one, constantly walking bare foot but always demanding we all wear high ankle wellies. I think he assumed we wouldn't look where our feet fell, but otherwise a very enjoyable experience to check out some of the protected species on the reserve! he didn't do much for my entomological interests but his Ornithological and cultural knowledge was very very impressive!

No doubt Amazon fishes are incredible species from colour to the shape. I hope there are some extreme strict rules to catch wild fish. We love amazon but we love the local too. keep your place safety and beautiful. however thats your home amazonian people.

What people don't realize is that the aquarium catches are far less than food catches. Each fish pays the locals more, so they don't have to take as much.

It actually shows how the wild caught fish in this part of the word helps with conservation of the Amazon and providing sustainable ways for locals to earn income (instead of land clearing for cattle, etc).

It isn't just about the fish, the dead fish supply food for forest birds and creatures and extra nutrients for the trees. I am glad that they are being looked after in tanks but there should be some monitoring of other creatures needs.

@@robertanthonybermudez5545 Wild caught aquarium fish are collected from less than 2% of the area of the Amazon rainforest. There are less fish exported today than there was 20 years ago. After 60 years of collecting in Amazonas there has been no decline in fish populations due to the aquarium trade ( unlike food fishing ). Are you also opposed to the capture of fish for consumption globally and do you refuse to eat those fish ?

Brazil has very tight controls on all exported fish by the government agency IBAMA.

@@MAZONMICROCOSM capturing from 2% of the area of the amazon did not answer the question. your argument is like: ocean going vessels only use a small area of their nets compared to the area of the whole ocean but still we suffer from overfishing. there is a sustainable way of getting the fishes instead of taking them raw from the amazon. also fish collection is not the only reason why to protect the whole amazon. Maybe this organization is a ornamental fish cartel.

@@robertanthonybermudez5545 There are no wild caught aquarium fish species under threat of decline in Amazonas, Brazil. Not one. If any fish populations are considered to be under pressure, they are placed on the list of species which are not approved for export. Very strictly enforced by IBAMA.

That a fish can have a festival is stunning cardinal tetras are so pretty and now that i know they mean so much to some people makes them even more beautiful. And breeding is important if humans fuck the rainforest up we will be happy to have the species saved in tanks and that means we could keep them alive for longer or best case put them back in their original habitat if they get better again.

as small breed of fish . i breed discus , plecos , angelfish , cory catfish , whiptail catfish and many more . i sell to mom and pop fish shop in my town in the usa .me and the people i trade with would never want to damage the wild fish stocks. we would hope if any fish was lost in it is wild home that we would have the fish in our tanks to start restock the wild with the fish . support your local fish store .you will miss the when they are gone.

I always have the biggest dilema when it come to this, to all kind of amazing animal and plant in the world, not only the fishes. I just don't want them to extinct in the wild, but we all know the corporate and the government only care about money.

I haven't watched the video yet, I'm downloading part 1&2 to enjoy on a long flight coming up soon. I've been in the hobby for about 5-6 years now, and have always been all for conservation.i know the collection of wild caught fish is controversial, but with catching and selling to experienced breeders we can fully eliminate the catching of wild fish. I figure we are working on this now. Take the Tequila Splitfin (Zoogoneticus tequila) (I am 90% sure this is the species) that the San Antonio Zoo is breeding. This fish is critically endangered but with the breeding couldn't we potentially reach a point where it is safe to re-release these fish into their natural riverways, given that their immune system is strong enough and other factors? Hawaii recently banned the collection of Salteater Aquarium Fish, putting to my knowledge, the captive breeding projects of many popular saltwater fish on hold. I guess my question is, is it sustainable to keep collecting fish if a percentage of them go to sustainable breeders? I would also like to mention that though Segrest and Apet (the places I order my stores fish from) sponsored this I'd really really like to see that their wild caught fish AND captive bred are parasite free, and free of any other illnesses. Their guppies are constantly bringing in fungal infections and other diseases which in turn affect our wild caught species that they still provide.

Check out both parts and perhaps you will come to realize that in the case of Amazonas, Brazil the capture and export of wild tropical fish is helping to conserve the forest, aquatic habitats and all the diversity of Amazonas including fish. Eu sou do Brazil. É certo coletar? Complicado. Já vi que tem um período que o IBAMA proíbe a coleta do cardinal para ele se recuperar. Acho que o mais certo seria a reprodução em cativeiro, como fizeram com os peixes marinhos palhaço. Com isso não afetaria a natureza. Tenho Aquário e já tive muitas perdas, principalmente de cardinais por ictio. Vejo muitas perdas nas lojas do Brasil, muitos morrem também. Eu tento aqui fazer o melhor, mas a natureza é imprevisível. E tem uma lista de peixes feitas pelo governos no Brasil, que até hoje hoje é complicada, ninguém intende isso. As leis no Brasil não funciona bem, fiscalização é complicada. Resumido tem que organizar isso tudo de novo.

An informed symbiotic balance. Is the only way forward. Pollution to the ecosystem be it from deforestation, agricultural or mining runoff, plastic industrial encroachment. Dams could be the silent assassin preventing fish access to their historic spawning areas. Individually each issue is dangerous. Together they are the death of a thousand cuts. One example of the many critically endangered fish is the Zebra Pleco in nature they are almost gone. The combination of dam location mine runoff’s and poaching of the remaining population. Probably means that soon only aquarium and captive breeding keep them from extinction.

Thanks for the comment. I am unsure if you believe that the 'pattern' is positive or negative. For the communities in the Amazon region more activity is a good thing. It allows them to earn a livelihood for their families in a manner that is not destructive to the environment or cause a decline in the populations of target species.
