This is similar to human behaviour. The elephant knows a good spot to position itself for potential handouts. This is endangering the elephant and people in the short term whilst in the long term it will lose it's natural ability to find food in the forest making it susceptible to disease and predators.

For years people in the area know that there is an Elephant on the way to Kataragama who is harmless, and asking for fruit bribary from passerbys. It tries to scare people who doesnt give it food. People go to Kataragama to offer fruit puja to Skandha Kumara Devalaya along this road and some of them have fragnent fruits in the vehicles ( carrying for the pooja). This elephant awaits until they give it some. There was only one bribe taking elephant over a long time but i've heard that there was this another one joined the party in last few years. 🤣
