Wild Mushroom Identification Walk- Early November 2023

Want to learn about those wild, trail-side fungi that you're seeing this time of year? Look no further! Aaron Hilliard, VP of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society, takes us on a walk to look at and describe a bunch of wild mushrooms growing trailside in western Washington. These magical Pacific Northwest forests are home to beautiful fungi, and autumn is the perfect time to go out and look at them, discover what they are, and find out if they're good to eat, poisonous, or perhaps hallucinogenic.
Aaron has been studying fungi for over 25 years and is a well known mycology educator in the Kitsap area. He puts things in simple terms you can understand. This video is for beginners and experienced fungal enthusiasts alike. Come along into this journey into Mushroom Wonderland.
We will look at Hypholoma dispersum, Hypholoma fasciculare, Suillus lakei, Gomphidius smithii, Xeromphalina, Amanitas, Lions Mane, Cats tongue, Zellers Bolete and so many others! We also look at wild running salmon and the largest tree in the area. Make sure to subscribe.

I enjoy walking down those trails with you as an 80 year old mushroom spore infused spirit since my early childhood in Netherland hunting for chanterelles with my dad. The excuse and attraction to spend hours in forests sniffing the air and training eyes to separate the ochers of fallen leaves from the little bulges that hint on a rising mushroom. In inner fusion and intuition. I enjoy your walks and focused views as my own photos are not nearly that focused. Thanks for the chance to virtually join you. 🍄

i found some psilocybe cyanescens earlier this week out near mt Rainer it was like the soil was calling for me. i was driving out to do a service call, and for whatever reason i thought to myself that i would see a deer on the road ahead. then 3 mins later down the road i see a deer and i thought to myself wow that actually happened ... ? it made me get a good feeling predicting that occurrence. now nearing the home that i must service i pull into the driveway, and another deer just sitting there to greet me i felt even more of a spiritual feeling. i continue to do my biddings and once done i return to my van to see a whole bunch of the little shroomies i now understood what the deer were telling me.

Keep up the great work Aaron. That is one of my absolute favorite walks in Kitsap. And one of my first when I lived here five years ago. Good job not taking Gunner. I have a hard time not taking my pooch on that walk. I’m gonna go watch the salmon there tomorrow. Mush Love!

@@mushroomwonderland1 Especially Black Labs if the one we had when I was a youngster was typical of the breed 😁! Out on a cool morning shortly after dawn to make a rabbit and quail hunt, our Rebel would often have already deposited four steaming 💩piles in the time elapsed since we let him out of the truck while Dad and I were hauling our guns, vests or game pouches, shells and canteens out of the rig and buckling on the gear.

I love watching your videos! I live on an island very close to where you are so when I go walking in the forest (my fave) it looks so much like what you are filming. That's so cool cuz I've been hunting and curious for years but it's difficult to know for sure what I'm looking at just by looking at books with photos later, ya know? I do like these kinds of videos, silent walking, and talking too. It's all good! This video with all the ID-ing is great education for me too. I mean, yes, you're always doing the ID for us! I guess I'm talking about the non-edibles... I've got a lot of rotting woodchips, as well as a few fallen trees, so I've always got different mushrooms popping up in my yard, and many times I find it very difficult to ID them! Every year my yard has different mushrooms who are new to me! It's all SO COOL !! I'm also liking the idea of the preserve where no humans are allowed to take anything away. As a species, we're such takers! And too many takers ruin a good thing. Thanks for bringing me along on your walk! 🍄♥️

I do like walking through the forest like you are doing. I’m in north Idaho so it looks very similar to where you are. You mentioned the burning of forests. Preventing all burns have hurt the forests as I’m sure you know. Good vid, Thanks

Wow... What a beautiful place. I can just see myself living out there. Magical place. Lions Mane, and Cats Tongue..? Wow. I gotta. Or close by. Those trees are beautiful. I Also just found one amanita like that the other day and couldn't figure out what it was. Looked it up and i guess around here they don't have a real name or something ? Maybe you can explain why ? We have a similar Agaricus Silvaticus here in the UK, it grows exclusively under pine trees and stains red when cut they are quite rare here in Britain they also smell pleasant!

Loved the video. It's hard for some of us to get outside sadly but at least we can still see what is happening out there. I just look for mushrooms in the local neighborhood and I've been finding lots of stuff. Hopefully this upcoming weekend there will still be things growing though it is getting cold.
