I come from Pendleton, Oregon where we have five days of pioneer parades and rodeo. All my childhood I wanted one of those gorgeous horses (all horses were gorgeous) and kept telling my parents we had enough room in the back yard for one. Then we went to central Oregon and saw the wild mustangs run free on film, then some brought in to be sold to those who want a horse (not dog food). I nearly went crazy. The back yard was still not big enough. A week of work on a family friend’s farm with horses, proved that I loved watching and loving horses, but the back yard and I weren’t going to work.

what size round pen do you use? I'm hoping to get started with a mustang next year, but I'm not sure what size to make. For adoption, you have to have a shelter for my area, but it looks like it doesn't need to be in the area they're first delivered to, which was another concern I had.
@SteveDyer
@SteveDyer 2 жыл бұрын
I use a 50 foot round pen. Sometimes 45 is better. You can use your round pen as a pen for the mustang, but you are right, it can also be a separate enclosure.

Are you allowed to capture a wild horse yourself or do you have to go through an agency like the one this horse came from? From London, UK
@SteveDyer
@SteveDyer Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind comments. You are not allowed to capture wild horses in the US if they are running on government land. However, there are 60,000 horses that have already been captured that can be adopted for only $125.

You have to get the horse moving around the round pen. You will probably have to use a training stick or something similar to get his feet moving. Check out my video called Wild Mustang Training Silver Day 1.

Do you know anyone in the Bay Area CA who does gentling or literally anything involving training mustangs and would be open to letting someone shadow them? I’m 14, I don’t know anyone who does this kind of thing where I live but it’s been a dream of mine to work with mustangs since I was 4. I’d really like to meet someone who lives nearby who does what I want to do so that I can ask all of my unanswered questions, and maybe even get a bit of experience in the next few years!

There is limited land in the west for the horses to live. Some of them must be removed in order to keep the environment from being irreparably damaged.

It is possible but not likely. He attacks because he is afraid. Once you get him past the fear, he will be fine.

Ok before I watch this. I have question,I rescue an untouched two year old filly Saturday and same afternoon she got out of the wire fence pen,which was my fault not putting her in a more secure pen,anyway for days I worked on getting close and getting trust but then Tues she started hanging out with the other horses so now she's starting come up with them , should I continue this way and just let her get comfortable with me until I can get her in pen to work her or try and catch her asap then start ?? I think she will get comfortable eventually but I can tell she's not trusting people.shes not a mustang but is from new Mexico with several others that were neglected and underweight.
@SteveDyer
@SteveDyer 2 жыл бұрын
I think either way would probably be fine. If she is comfortable with another horse, try to put both of them in the secure pen together for a while.
@rickhaile2190
@rickhaile2190 Жыл бұрын
In my opinion you need to keep the dog out of the pen. It is a distraction to the horse. You can't get his complete attention if he's watching you and the dog. The times you said he was suprisingly scared, I believe was because of the dog. The first session the dog was'nt present and you had no snorting.
