In this video Terry Erasmus styles a collected wild olive. After removing the leaves, Terry eliminates branches which he does not require for the future canopy of the tree. Wire is then applied in order to shape the branches.

Amazing tree amazing work Terry. Finally thawing out and moving into spring over here. Bonsai collecting season. I have been dormant for too long. My orchids have been doing so well after moving into pumice. Thank you for the awesome tip. I finally have a new flower spike!

Wonderful work on your wild olive. Amazing amount of time and patience you've put into this stunning tree. There is something inherently primeval about an old olive. Can't get enough of the rugged bark and the abundance of grey-green foliage. How long will this tree take to regrow it's leaves?
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai 2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much Sue! 😀 I agree 100% on the primeval nature, love that phrase by the way. It shouldn't take more than a couple weeks to regrow the leaves.

Our autumn has started uncharacteristically very cold (April is usually very mild in Port Alfred ) and i am not sure if i can defoiliate and wire my olives at this time ?
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai 2 ай бұрын
That's a good point Derick. Thanks for raising it. My olives are still growing well and so I feel comfortable to defoliate now with still time for these leaves to develop and return energy to the tree prior to winter. In my experience the local olives always push well with the first winter rains - and we are well away from that in the Cape. One also needs to remember that our winters are very mild in comparison to locations which receive snow etc. Its more about avoiding a situation where we are reducing the trees resources to a point where its depleted and branches begin to die. If your trees are healthy and growing strongly I personally think you should defoliate and wire one of them and see how it responds vs the others. Then next time this year you will know either to perform the step earlier, later or not at all. You can only learn by experience and this experience can only be gained by making decisions which might initially appear as risks. The worst that can happen is that the tree is weakened and a single defoliation is not going to result in any dieback - provided you begin with a healthy tree to begin with.

Hi Terry, great videos! Since I saw you do some field growing and trunk chop on big trees you seem to be the best person I know of to ask this. March 9th I dug out a huge multi trunk privet after chopping all trunks and put it in a grow box. Now all trunks have between 3 to 20+ buds in all sorts of places, base, mid trunk, top. Some grow in clusters. Would you think it is safe to remove the lower buds and redundant ones to direct more energy to the others or should I leave it alone to regain strength?
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai 2 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! Yes absolutely, your intuition was spot on. Remove the excess buds as soon as possible keeping only one, the one growing at the best angle.

Really enjoy your videos Terry, but would like to see more relatable content on bonsai care. Most viewers don’t have mature material on hand and it sometimes feels unattainable to the average enthusiast. How about tips on best times for wiring, pruning, repotting etc and especially caring for less mature trees that might benefit us with species commonly used for bonsai in the Southern Hemisphere? Would love to see that 😊

Thank you for your comment and request. I can only assume that you have not browsed all the videos on my channel as I most certainly have many videos dealing with more basic topics featuring very cheap of a variety of species and immature material.

@@TerryErasmusbonsai Thank you for your reply. Yes you do and I have watched a great deal of videos on your channel, but it would be helpful to include your reasoning behind your methods. Like what season is best to wire, repot, fertilise for specific species. Watched your wild olive playlist for example but was unable to find info on these basic care topics. Just a suggestion that I believe would benefit saffers wanting to improve their bonsai development 😊
