Wild Quaker Parakeets Colony Building

Quaker parakeets modifying a twig nest, making it larger and working on entrances. This parakeet colony is located in Southwest Florida near the Caloosahatchee river.

Myiopsitta monachus, also known as the Quaker or 'Monk' parakeet, is a species of true parrot in the family Psittacidae. It is a small, bright-green parrot with an average lifespan of 20-30 years. It originates from Argentina and surrounding countries in South America. Self-sustaining feral populations occur in many places in North America and Europe.
Myiopsitta monachus, también conocido como el perico Quaker o 'Monk', es una especie de loro verdadero en la familia Psittacidae. Es un loro pequeño de color verde brillante con una vida media de 20 a 30 años. Se origina en Argentina y países vecinos de América del Sur. Las poblaciones salvajes autosuficientes se producen en muchos lugares de América del Norte y Europa.

You've got some great footage here. The close up of his nest building was amazing. It's great to see Quakers in the wild and I'm always amazed at their nest building skills, but it is rare to see their process this detailed. (I've had three Quakers over the years and they're a favorite of mine). Thank you very much for this!

i have one of these birds as a pet. they are very aggressive but can be very affectionate and loving as well. jealous, funny, loud, pushy, full of nerve! lol i love them. never a dull moment with him.

I live in brooklyn and we have a few colonies of these guys living within walking distance of my house. In the summer they eat from my neighbors bird feeders its pretty cool

I have a Quaker parrot just like this green one. He loves massages ( see my video of him getting a massage ) he talks a lot and whenever I say “ouch” he will ask if I’m okay, and will continue to ask until I answer him. Smart playful birds.

because they are not native species and they are putting in danger other species of birds that are native in spain, there are wild parakeets because someone decided that it was a good idea to let a shop one free

Same thing happened in the North East (New England) USA They flew away from a pet store delivery truck in the summer time. They made wooden branch twig nests similar to this video here but in the telephone pole lines. People never thought they’d make the cold winters...but they did!! 💯🦜♥️

There is a lots of them here in Santiago, Chile. We are right beside Argentina (their natural habitat) so can they be considered locals (?)

In Florida they are considered 'feral' that is living in the wild after escaping captivity. Selling captured Quaker parakeets is legal in Florida because they are not a native species.

Vivo en Argentina, en la provincia de Córdoba, aquí se les llama loritas o loros rompe bolsa (por su fama de romper bolsas de basura), suele haber decenas en los parques, y en algunos lugares son considerados plaga

Los cuáqueros no son aceptados en todos los Estados Unidos, pero en Florida los periquitos salvajes de los cuáqueros son legales y están permitidos como mascotas. Quakers are not accepted everywhere in the United States but in Florida wild Quaker parakeets are legal and they are allowed as pets.

Thousands of Monk parakeets and Indian Ring Necked parrots are scheduled to be killed in Seville, Spain as part of the city's plan to eradicate them as an 'invasive' species. Casual Bird they’re invasive because they eat food that a native animal could have eaten, and as cute as they are they aren’t native and invasive species can damage non-native ecosystem

It's good to remind people these are wild parrots. Our videos are taken with zoom lens tech so we are never very close to them. We don't ever touch the parakeets.

@@amenhop understood. I was thinking of my Quaker parrot. Even though he's an inside bird he still is very territorial of his cage and likes to bite. Sometimes I play vids like these so he can hear the bird sounds however he listens for a lil bit than doesn't care anymore.

A few months if they're young. It helps if you repeat the same words often and use a higher pitch voice as well as give physical cues. Like playing peekaboo is a common one. When you cover their view and they hear the "peekaboo", they learn to imitate the sound.

I have 2 male birds and they are inlove😳 But recently one of them doesn't have a lot of hair in their legs and back. Idk I was wondering if somebody could tell me what this/that means

Self plucking (those are feathers, not hair!) is a sign of heavy stress. Do consult a veterinarian, hopefully one specialized in birds, or even better, in parrots.
