Wild Snake Photography Gear Guide

Damon Bungard shares some of the gear in his daypack for a day of wildlife photography of wild snakes in the field, and some tools for recording environmental information in his study of herpetology. Make sure you are properly trained in snake identification and handling techniques before interacting with wild snakes, and know your state's wildlife regulations.

I have a passion for photographing snakes here in Hong Kong on an outlying island where I live. Some difference in the way we do things, I have no intention of picking them up or weighing them but I love to see them in their natural setting. The 3 snakes I mainly see, Rat Snake, Cobras and Bamboo Pit Viper must be different from the rattlers who in your video dont seem to flee when spotted. Rat Snakes almost always dash off which is why I have to set my DSLR on continuous high as I only have a split second. Cobras often do the same and I have to keep at least 3 metres away. Bamboo snakes are the most photogenic as they keep still in their ambush position but as they are nocturnal I have to use a flash and go out after dark.

Hi Damon. Very nice video! I check trail cams in some remote areas here in central PA. I wear snake boots and/or chaps and do everything I can to avoid the timber rattlers in the area. What types of weather conditions and habitat types do you want for finding rattlers?

Timber rattlers like rock outcrops near undisturbed mature forests. I think the best times to look for them are sunny days, in Spring and Fall when nightly lows dip into the 40-50s, and highs in the 70s. They'll be out basking in the sun to warm up in the mornings in conditions like that. Look for rock outcrops with layered rocks, slabs, flakes, etc, and lots of horizontal cracks that make good level places for them to wedge in and hide. For the most part, Timbers are very mellow relatively speaking amongst rattlesnake species and prefer to be left alone.
