Wild Swimming, Mining Ruins, and Amphitheatres: Discovering Cornwall’s Secrets

Today we are exploring inland Cornwall discovering some of its mining history, including quarries for wild swimming, grass covered amphitheatres and mining ruins. The sun is out and maybe spring is on the way. I’m joined by my sister and of course Miss Nancy in this adventure.
A little about us: I adopted my ex-racing greyhound Miss Nancy three years ago, it was a massive learning curve for both of us and we have become the best of friends, who love going on outdoor adventures, wild swims, van camping and finding vegan food out and about! We make videos showing what it’s like to have a greyhound as a pet, the beautiful outdoors, vanlife, and life with a greyhound!

Without putting a damper on a lovely bit of film I would not go anywhere near swimming in this sort of what looks like a quarry lake. Cramping can come on suddenly and only a metre below the surface the water temperature is very much lower and can cause a swimmer serious difficulties. As I put it nice film lovely girl but a bit to risky .

@happypin It's not for everyone, but give it a go 😊I def feel the benefits (but I'm part fish!). Small steps tho'; start with cold showers, followed by a plunge pool/bath, then move onto a pond/lake/river or sea (non-tidal). BUT please make sure someone is there to watch over you.... 🙏 Not necessarily in the shower tho 🤣(that would just be weird!🙈)

I miss my tia for long walks but i have lots of memories in her near 17 year life travelling up and down the country for holidays be it in a static or log cabin, she loved the castles, wales, scotland, cornwall lots, dorset, new forest, isle of wight and even jersey on a daytrip, no matter the elements it's good for the mind to get out, i love your vids, treasure them forever 😊

@@missnancysdayoff Very hard and she's been gone since 2016, fortunately i video'd her early years with a tripod type video camera before mobiles got better on filming, all on a disc or tape, i also have image face in a moving crystal above her casket in front room, she was a cross sheltie collie with a staffie, brown tan/white ☺️

@@missnancysdayoff She was adorably pretty, a much fussed upon dog whenever wherever i took her and she loved humans especially children,she loved swimming and was a strong sea swimmer, one example of being fussed on was at the needles fair on the isle of wight, a group of french school ppl fussed on her some even took photo's and selfies of her lol, she wasn't the best with other certain type dogs tho when on a lead, off the lead she was great.

Watching your video with your great storytelling skills inspires me and makes me consider leaving my cave and seeing the sun again.... @missnancysdayoff I live on the east coast of the United States. I'm considering traveling short trips, at least domestically, but am having difficulties deciding what kind of camper I shall get (e.g., class A, B, C, truckcamper, DIY a van conversion, etc.). If I could change my job to 100% remotely, I would get a 4x4 class B or B+, and I would venture an attempt to rent or convert a van and travel in Europe, as well. Let's see... at the moment, I would be happy to leave my cave for a bit and see the sun again. Cheer! Pops

@popspops3795 oh cool, I watch quite a few american KZfaqrs living in vans and cars the scenery is outstanding, I have only really visited the NW myself Oregon up and into Vancouver, which is an area I love. Nice and wet like home 🤣 Maybe you can get started with whatever vehicle you already have?! I’m actually thinking of trying going out in my car instead of big van. Anything can work right, it’s just good to get out and see the sun as you say!

How tall are you, my sisters freediving wetsuit may fit if you want to have a go. It will keep you lovely and warm ie no zips on it and a built in hood.

You said I would enjoy this video , and you’re not wrong. Loved it all,the sunken path ways, abandoned quarries, views from the hills , cute cottages and even a performance of Romeo and Juliet. At 6.40 you summed up how I feel when out exploring the South Downs. To have to burn calories to visit these places gives them a tranquil exclusivity. Your sister was a great camera woman too. The only problem is you have raised the bar for me, I must try harder!🙂

I have a Wheaton greyhound x Saluki and he is a smashing boy, greyhounds are such a lovely breed, your Nancy seems such a sweet heart, bless her !! Great following your travels around Cornwall and your wild swimming, you are braver than most having a dip, im up in Liskeard just off Bodmin Moor and i have access to two quarries there for swimming, Caradon quarry and Gold diggings quarry, give them a try if youre up that neck of the woods........keep up the great work....Shaun.

❤❤❤ those ancient banked tracks! Intimate Cornwall You can measure the age in centuries by counting the number of tree & bush species in a hundred yard stretch. Hope MIss Nancy is better

Beautiful day, beautiful location. Tori you looked properly chilled out after your walk. Just shows you how vigorating the natural world can be, of course the company of your sister and Miss Nancy is the icing on the 🍰, hats off to you both for braving the cold water. Ideal location for a spot of yoga and some meditation. Cider - is that your tipple of choice?

@Melatiah I was it was such a. Good day, such a tonic the views and the cold water and the quiet! So important to get out, we did a little meditation there it was great. Maybe not so peaceful in summer 🤣 Well it certainly used to be, I mainly drink red wine now, but if I go to a pub a cider is still tempting!

Fair play to you, bet it was cold this time of year, I visited a disused quarry on one of my vids, thay call it the blue lagoon as it used to be bright blue, but sadly there has been fatalitys there, was an earey place to be fair, enjoyful day topped off with a pint what more can you ask for, great vid 👍

Strange, and quite unsettling, to see a video of someone wandering around my childhood home of Carharrack. The belief is that you can see the sea on 3 sides. Knackers live under the hill. But the flooded quarries on Carn Marth are quite dangerous and one is very deep. Strange and secret things were disposed of in to its depths. But the quarries don’t appear to have changed much in 50 years. We never knew how the Tench got there but they were easy to hook. If my goldfish survived, they will be big enough now to be seek revenge so take care. Cousin Jack.

I’ve had a few drinks watching Scotland in the six nations and after that, I’ve come home and I’m delighted with the piano score and tranquility of the wild swimming here! I’ve been subscribed to your channel for a wee while now but this time it’s hits different. I think you’re a superstar and I yearn for a life similar again as to what it was before for me; Van life! Miss Nancy seems so chill not having been thrown in at the deep end having to learn an intensive bouldering course just to keep up! ☺️ all the best x

No not anymore - Back in the day my then girlfriend and I bought a 1974 VW bus and, after a lot of work, we left our life behind for 2/3 months at a time each year touring most of Scotland incl. it’s islands. We only ever made it as far south as the Lake District though, it’s shame we never made it to Cornwall! Looking back with rose tinted glasses it was such a romantic period of my life although.. she never beckoned me with Shakespearean quotes!🧐😂x

I love my own space and being by myself, but I reckon being with someone else would make travelling less stressful 🤣 I hope we are going to get up to the lakes and Scotland I wish it weren’t so far. You know what they say, the grass is always greener on the other side and I’m sure there is a lot that we don’t see but you seem to have the solo narrative down! also if you’re amorously involved with your travel partner it can sometimes be a hinderance and more stressful! 😆 Well now, if you ever do make it to Scotland my favourite word/superlative in Scots is ‘braw’ and an example sentence could be ”it’s a braw day” or “you’re looking braw hen.” If it ever makes an appearance in your Scottish video I’d be honoured 😉 Aw thanks, I hope one day becomes day one when I least expect it!

The theatre is cool, me and my friend Joy went to the theatre on the cliffs.. and made the mistake of eating at the local pub, EXPENSIVE! everywhere else we went everything was totally reasonable! Cornwall is one of those places that is worth the visit regardless of location. to me its the real england. But love seeing and hearing foreign accents and people, as they all look blown away, sometimes literally!!

Wild swimming in January... Nancy thinks you and your sis are normal and the rest of us are eccentric. She might even be right! Fairly sure Nancy won't ever swim, don't think greyhounds can, or maybe they just don't. I had a whippet, Josie, and he never swam, he'd just wait in the shallows till his pal Charlie, a lab/collie type cross, swam in and retrieved a stick, then Josie would nick it off him. Charlie never seemed to mind - they got on well and whatever the other one did was just part of the deal.

@kyle_c936 haha I am pretty sure she doesn’t think we are normal, but dogs do find humans puzzling and rightly so! She actually has swum once, properly, in a river! I was amazed because I didn’t think she would or know if she could. But my sister was in there and she swam out to her like a seal it was brilliant. She was super pumped when she got out jumped up a massive wall and sprinted up the path out of sight 🙈 luckily she came right back, she hasn’t ever wanted to repeat it though! Usually behaves much more like your Josie when her buddies go in. Intriguingly my friends greyhound who was found on the street loves water, she will always find body of water and lie in it even if it’s winter and she has a coat on 🤣

@johnm2879 my sister measured it was 9 degrees! Definitely cold in. But it was so sheltered sitting in the sun on the rock was so nice, if I hadn’t just been swimming I would have felt warm and totally taken a nap 😴

It was amazing and different I think it’s a great walk. It’s near to Redruth, the walk is actually from a book called Wild Swimming Walks which is a great book if you are into that! Have a fantastic trip (I agree about Miss Nancy 😍)

Imagine Graphic design but moving is a very basic way of saying it. I create post production graphics for people like jet 2, sky, unibet that you might of seen on tv. Would love to leave it all behind and travel in van and get freelance work just don't think i could survive financially. Hi . When I was younger I was in every puddle I could find . I was always in the sea, I loved it. However now I'm full of arthritis. If I go in the sea now I wear a wetsuit and even with the wetsuit, come evening I can hardly walk. The following day I feel ok again and then out comes the wetsuit and I'm back in the water again. My dog always swam with me but I Found him stiffening up in the evenings also. We looked like a pair of geriatrics but we weren't. I was in my upper 20s and my dog was only 4. Food for thought. Look for tiger Balm or something similar and rub it into your joints after swimming. Or you might end up like me. Lovely video. I was so jealous watching you in the water.

Yes it was definitely whenever I'd been in cold water because if I didn't go in I wasn't sore. I can't even go to the swimming baths now without pain and stiffness later in the day. You could see the effect the cold water had on you. Just be aware of stiffness or joint pain after swimming. It's not so bad in the summer months if you have nice sunshine to warm your joints and muscles up.

Hey! Oh that is awesome but really annoying it didn’t work, was that on the MNDO website? I should try and figure out what’s going on 😖 I am not sure about your message but KZfaq does remove quite a few things before i get a chance to read them so that may well have happened! Thank you I really appreciate that, Greyhounds do just get used and dropped and they are so deserving of love, they have such big hearts. .when the issue is sorted I will definitely get one🙂Really enjoying the video so pleased I found your channel.It so hard to find nice genuine people.these days.so you are a breath fresh of air.I really won't to help with people to understand how amazing gray hounds can be as a pet.with a little time and lots of love.they can be such a benefit to family's.a good way for the family to get exercise.also apparently if a family has a pet.they are more likely to be or affectionate.that is a great quality to have especially in the family. Sorry forgot to ask how is miss nancy.you mentioned her health is not to good.and she been in and out of the vet.also how are you doing it can be stressful especially when pet family are ill.my mum and Dad have cancer so know how that feels.but if you need to just talk to someone.would be happy to listen.🙂give me joy just to think.I can help just by listening or give a good suggestion.best interest at heart.and please don't hesitate..wish you all the best Luke Reade

It’s true, and they can be so good with children who are scared of dogs (I know one!) because they don’t keep barking and jumping up. Miss Nancy has definitely won this little girl over!

@user-lh1jw7rl1q oh thank you, to be honest she is still not well. It’s a pretty stressful time and it’s so hard trying to get her better and feeling like I am failing. But there we go fingers crossed the next few weeks will get better. I am so sorry to hear about your mum and dad that must be so hard for you , me and Miss Nancy send our best wishes to you!

@iansenior9759 Yes she is an ex-racer that I adopted from a rescue when her owner got rid of her. She put her head on my shoulder and that was that.

@@missnancysdayoff I have a little black tuxedo cat named BLUE. His carer went into a care home and was in foster care for quite a while. I provided him with a forever home. He sleeps on my bed and we have tummy rubs and cuddles He gently touches my cheek with his little paws and in his excitement gives me a love bite. I think I prefer animals to humans. Take care all.

@iansenior9759 Blue sounds precious. I adore cats, Miss /Nancy is my first dog my family had 4 cats before. I think I do to animals are pure of heart, apart from the chimps! 🙏

Hello you , I heard you calling me in the video = strange , obviously the song for this episode = Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Polka Dot Bikini = Brian Hyland , the closest I could think of anyway , you was definitely in the pink today , the water was slightly colder than usual = enough said on that.
