Willie, Sarah and their dog, Jack Spaniels, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to 'Live The Skye Life'!
In this episode, the 'Skye-Lifers' decide to give wild swimming a try - for the first time here on the Isle of Skye. We found a spot right outside our house where we could escape the heat - but will we be brave enough to jump in without wetsuits..?!
Plus, we continue renovation work on our stone byre (outbuilding). The end is nearly in sight now for this project and we can't wait to finish it!
Finally, Willie takes a drive with Skye born & bred Richard and they encounter some of the notorious holiday traffic...

Ahaha yes that was the plan, but then we found the tennis ball and of course balls > sticks to a spaniel. Mind - we said it was his favourite stick. It was only his third favourite of that week 😅😜

Amen When my husband and I travel, We will always pull over if we are going slower than the speed limit to let other vehicles pass. Just the conscientious thing to do.

Yep - it’s really easy to do it with consideration for other road users. We do it too when we are driving somewhere unfamiliar or if Sarah is driving (she’s a bit more tentative than Willie!)

❤ you guys always make me smile, especially Jack Spaniels. The more I watch you, the more I need to come back to Scotland, maybe even Skye. Byre looking fab. Wondered why you'd cover up all that beautiful stone til you mentioned brieze blocks and waterproof membrane! It's going to be such a cozy work space! You are so lucky living the Skyee life, even with the campervan parade!

Yes - we did think about leaving some of the stone uncovered but couldn’t work out how to do it while also keeping the damp out. Plus, close up a lot of the mortar isn’t very aesthetically pleasing!!

I live on a small island in a different part of the world but sure can relate to the traffic challenges that come with living in a popular seasonal tourist destination. Add to that the constant road maintenance that must be done during these same months (before it's too cold for asphalt work). I make sure to have relaxing podcasts and cds at the ready, and water/snacks in my vehicle to help maintain a calm state of mind while facing inevitable delays getting pretty much anywhere. One silver lining to the slower travel is I have more time to take in the scenery. Thanks for another fantastic video folks!

Yeah - the pothole situation here is…interesting too!! We do enjoy our drives here and we have been lucky so far that we haven’t had to be anywhere in a hurry (touch wood), but you never know if the person behind you is needing to catch a train or get to an appointment, so we always try to drive with consideration 😊

Thanks! As a spaniel, Jack actually has webbed paws to help him swim! Our water supply is spring fed, so (touch wood) we’ve been ok so far. We are being sparing with it where we can though 😅

Aaaah long summer days spent dookin in burns, lochs or the sea, takes me back to jumping off the jetty at Ganavan Sands near Oban in the 70s.....brilliant but our natural colour was more blue than pink lol😅. Last week it was Jack running back and forth, this week it was Willie (Jack obviously training him for Olympics eh), will it be Sarah's turn next week?? Brilliant just brilliant guys found myself smiling at the end of the bloopers yet again.

It's a love/hate relationship with tourists. Especially with the very slow vehicles. Having just driven these roads in April (had a cottage over the bridge in Skinidin), I can really appreciate how slow going it must be. Really enjoyable video - swimming looked really refreshing!

The swimming looked like a blast! My favorite parts were the underwater shots of Jack. Where I live in Nova Scotia, the summer brings the tourists in RV'S and as much as they bring much-needed cash to the area, it can be pretty frustrating for the locals who are trying to get to work, etc. Double edged sword. What can ya do?

A double edged sword - exactly! We have no issue with tourists, everyone deserves to visit places like this and we did many times before we moved here. But, everyone can act considerately and hopefully that’s what the majority of visitors do 😊

Smashing video. Scotland is even more beautiful when the sun is shining. Was on Skye three weeks ago and the camper vans were already arriving. They really do slow the traffic down. I dread to think what August is like.

We’re going to find out soon enough!! We’ve only ever visited outside of the peak season before we moved here, so it will be eye-opening. However, we knew this about Skye before we moved, so we just have to make sure to always leave plenty of time on journeys and avoid the tourist hotspots 😊

The shelf looks great. I had a hard time understanding how the shelf was going to end up looking, based on your explanation, so it was really fun watching it come together. I understood what you were saying once I saw you doing it. The wood looks so much better once you gave it the texturing and oil/stain treatment. I love it! Your swim looked fun. It was plain to see that Jack enjoyed it too. I understand your frustration with tourism. I live in an area of Florida that is usually rather laid back; that is until the snowbirds arrive. The traffic gets to be really annoying. You have to start planning on twice the time to get anywhere. However, tourism is where Florida gets most of it's money. Catch 22. I try to remember that it's me annoying somebody else when I'm travelling and that helps me to "take it on the chin". That's what you get when you live in a beautiful place. 😉 Thanks for another great video. I enjoyed it all. 😊

Great video, Byre is coming along beautifully. Swimming looked very refreshing and fun. I lived for 20 years right near a famous golf course and for two weeks every year just getting to the grocery store was a major ordeal, so I understand your frustration with camper van traffic right now. The weather has been incredible recently! We knew about the holiday season before we moved here, so it’s just one of those things that we decided was worth it. But others who have lived here their whole lives have seen it change over the years

Nice swim out there. How hot was it out there? Seems like it was refreshing to have a swim. I like how the shelves turned out especially giving it that rustic look. I couldn't believe how much camper vans are out there. I guess with summer now, you have lots tourists there. Keep cool out there.

We've just returned from Skye a week ago and are so with you: Campervans, campervans and campervans 🙈. Yes, we were tourist too, but have been visiting Scotland since 30+ years and have been to Skye several times before. We were quite shocked about how everything changed and how crowded the island hast become. But as years back and still now: As a tourist: You can enjoy the scenery and still let the locals overtake, that's what passing places are for. And please stop in or opposite the correct side! 🙏🏻

By the way: Thanks for all your wonderful tips: We had a great stop at the Bridge Café at Spean Bridge driving up from our friends in Stirling and loved visiting Café Cùil. Looking at Sarah's gorse print up in our living room now makes us think of our second home Scotland every day now 🥰

If you want to make wood look old, put a Brillo type steel wool ball but without the soap into white vinegar in a sealed jar overnight. The following day just brush it onto the timber, The results are spectacular.

Possibly the best video yet guys, Jack was living the dream down by the water! I try to make a point of not coming up in my van during peak tourist season, that must really P the locals off! It's really not that difficult to pull in or flick a left indicator on when there are more than one or two cars stuck behind you in the van.

As you said a wee bit of consideration goes a long way, and always, always clean up after yourself and even take a wander around with a binn bag and help out. It's only fair to keep the island beautiful.

I've never heard the term "wild swimming", but it's one of my very favorite things to do. We're at the same latitude...Glacier fed waters on a scorching day are glorious! I love lakes, rivers, oceans, inland waters. 🧜‍♀️ Willie's "Basic Byre" Interior Design style is very nice 🩷

Great video as always. Your new studio space is coming along amazing. I shudder watching the swimming hole lark. I actually worried about Jack. Aww thanks Dorothy! Don’t worry - we know that bit of water very well. We have seen it at very low tide, so we know what’s down there. And Jack always knows that we go home to treats and cuddles (after being towel dried 😅)

I learnt to drive in a Kombi which was definitely slow up hills and had a max speed of 100kms per hour. My dad taught me to always pull over and let the traffic behind me pass once it built up a little. It’s so selfish of those campervans not to!

its only a matter of time before a tourist turns up to see your cottage! Caravans and camper vans are the bane of my life when I am up at Oban ( I know I am a tourist as well ! but at least I have the common decency to drive properly!!) I avoid loch lomond entirely now on the way there as its full of numpties

We were on Skye last week in our motorhome and we're not all the same! I too get frustrated when they're just bimbling along at a snail's pace. I ALWAYS pull over, when it's safe to do so, to let the faster traffic get on with their journey. Won't be coming back any time soon though, not until the roads are suitable for driving on. The potholes are horrendous. You are so lucky to be living there though, it's beautiful, especially in the sunshine.

Ahh yes the potholes are pretty bad (although they were worse a few weeks ago believe us!!). We totally don’t judge all campers/motor homes the same - the vast majority are very considerate and will pull in etc, but there’s always a few that spoil it 😕

Wow! I'd love to be there, jumping in and having a wild swim! I've fancied trying it for ages. You certainly chose a gorgeous place to live. Sarah looked like a mermaid as she was swimming about. Willie, you did a cracking job on those shelves. They looked beautiful when you finished. And Jack looked very pleased that his humans had at last joined him in the water!
