Wildcat Update! Excessive wear on the polymer receiver?

I run 500 rounds through the Winchester Wildcat to see if any excessive wear from the steel bolt, can be detected in the polymer receiver. Only a total of approx 800 rounds have been ran in this rifle currently but I'll take a close look to see if there are any signs.

As somebody that maintains and repairs production machinery I can tell you that there are some applications where a polymer is actually superior to metal in terms of wear and friction. Thermal expansion is also a factor that can be controlled and even eliminated with the use of polymers over metals.

So far, I think the polymer was a good choice for this one. Thanks for watching!

Beretta ARX 100 is made for 5.56 and uses the same principle, polymer receiver with metal bolt. It's the Italian service rifle and used by several countries as well. If that arrangement can work for 5.56, i'd figure a .22lr caliber wouldn't be a problem. Hopefully.

It's such a contradiction, people will complain about polymer rifles like this all day - then turn around and buy Glocks.

I have no problems with polymer and I didn't notice any wear on the polymer of this rifle. I own a Nylon 66 with no significant wear and even recently purchased a CZ rifle with a polymer lower. The purpose of doing the video was to show there is really no issues with polymer in a firearm, it's a durable long lasting material. I really like firearms made of metal and wood even if they do suffer from wear and atmospheric conditions. I don't own a Glock but I do have other polymer pistols. Thanks for watching!

A Glock slide rides on steel inserts In the frame all moving parts are metal on metal! the bolt of the wildcat rides directly on the polymer! Not the same at all! It will probably hold up but I get the concern.

Appears to be good value for the price but where I shoot the lack of threads on the barrel is a deal killer for me. Perhaps that would add another 25 cents to the actual cost of the thing. Picked up a couple of KelTecs last week. The P17 and the CP33. The P17 is perfect. The CP33 won't strip the first round from either mag with any kind of ammo(tried 6 kinds) with first round on the right and on the left, bolt open and closed, 5 rounds, 10 rounds, 33 rounds in mag. It always hangs up with the bullet mostly in the chamber. The funny thing is, once I hand feed the first round in the chamber the reat all go bang and work perfectly. I emailed KelTec and will see what they say. Any suggestions? Another good informative video. Thanks. JimE

Awesome review. I bought mine 2 weeks ago. Thought it would be a good idea to see what others have come across. I decided to buy after reading that it took Ruger 10-22 magazines. I myself prefer a synthetic/polymer stock. I have wood stocks that every time I scratch it or put a ding in it my stomach hurts alil. Wood is just too pretty to have it all beat up. Polymer is more of a tough, rough, and ready material. And all tho you also wouldn't go around using it as a bat, you still get a sense of durability and ruggedness. Hopefully they come out with pistol recievers, and tons of optional accessories
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on the wood vs polymer stocks, I was a little worried about this one having a polymer receiver though. I don't think there's an issue at all with the Wildcat and if you already have a 10-22, you'll already have at least one extra magazine. I'm sure if the Wildcat proves to be successful, their will be an aftermarket following. Thank you for watching, enjoy and be safe!

The fact that Remington Thunderbolts fed and fired reliably in a semi auto rifle, speaks volumes for the Wildcat. Many semi rifles dont like those rounds. I have a Marlin Model 60 that does not like Thunderbolts, but will shoot most anything else. I now have the Wildcat but haven't shot it yet. I put on a Simmons 22 Mag scope and it fit just fine. Looking forward to range time. Thanks for a great video.

My kids are into SASS and going to nationals this week. We’ve used two wildcats the whole year. They’ve functioned very well this far. They do not have the round count of some of the Rugers on the team, but they’ve been getting it done. The only modification I’m currently looking at is having a local custom shop mill down the barrel some. We’ve done this on most of the 10/22s we use and it makes the guns much lighter. I guess we are the lab rats on this one.

I want to see someone pull the barrel out. Kind of interesting the serialized part is the trigger group so the upper receiver could be replaced if it wears and that could be done by the aftermarket. I would like to see the trigger group made of aluminum. Edit: I just watched your other video on it, I see you did pull the upper and mentioned the possibility of a replacement part for it

Any set of rings that fit on a picatinny rail should work, the height of the rings will be determined by the scope though. After about 2 thousand rounds I have two issues. The rear sight fell off and was lost. The bolt no longer locks back with the Winchester magazine. If I push up on the magazine it will lock back, I don't know if this is due to wear of the thin plastic that makes contact with the steel magazine pin. They need to come up with a more solid rear sight for this rifle. I had no problems with reliability or accuracy
@SmallCaliberArmsReview

I had an issue with the rear sight as well but I figured it was because I moved it and didn't tighten it back down properly. I have not experienced the magazine issue though. @@SmallCaliberArmsReview well marlin 60's have to be broken down to clean & still need to be patched & brushed out from the muzzle end? So they are kind of involved no matter how you do a serious cleaning. But I hate taking out the bolt & return spring & re assembling. If not careful,ya could need a new spring, god bless that in this pandemic. Glad I ordered 3 last time! I find with my lube used in the barrel ,it keeps the fouling soft so it will patch out easy right into the breech & action unfortunately. But this lube has staying power & keeps that gunk soft & slick so it dont wear things or interfere in any way. Just patch till clean & relube the boar with a patch,even lube bullets some times. It will throw crazy tight groups with those Aguila super extra plus copper-plated 40 grain round-nose high velocity. Like 10 in a 3/8" group at 50 yrds benched,that includes the zingers! 7 or 8 fit in 5/16". Now this bnb lube is highly soluble with kerosene as is all gun power residue,even black powder,this was invented as a pirodex & black powder competion lube,but is good on all powders. No matter how filthy dirty they might be. So for a good quick cleaning at home,the kerosene bath ,tooth brush turn all that crud in the action & under the bolt in to sauce & actually dissolves a lot of it,neutralizes its caustic properties and carries alot of it right out of there. Then compressed air another rinse bath & air again & its clean? I do lube the action with some gun oil & my lube to ensure things stay soft ,slick & smooth as soon as they begin to build up. My lube is all natural, must be kept frozen for over 1 month storage periods or it will spoil & loose some properties & groups will open back up ,then close again with fresh lube or properly stored lube. It's soft waxy type that wont melt off on a 105° day & also tested & works fine down to -10°f. I think it would work fine on the wild cat barrel,rifling & action. Hey,I've searched & searched & can not find out what type rifling the wild cat has? Buttoned,1 in 16" twist but nothing on ,( micro groove,how many lands & grooves,& depth of rifling?) I shot alot of competion & wont purchase a weapon until I know this information? So i havent purchased a wild cat yet,& might very much like too after reading that missing information.

@@marktheo1563 I mostly just do plinking or defensive practice, I've never had the time to do any serious competitive shooting. I couldn't tell you anything about the rifling in the wildcat and honestly, for the price, I don't know if it would make a serious competition rifle. I love the microgroove rifling that Marlin used, I can understand the benefit of it. Between "deep cleaning" I usually run a bore snake from the breach to the muzzle so I can avoid anything ending up in the action, at least anything from the barrel.

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview actually price is not so important? What is critical is the machining of the barrel & rifling. My marlin model 60 was had from a local walmart during the first amo shortage back around 2014? No amo? Who wants the weapon? Manager special $99.00. I wanted it cause of coyotes killing everything in my yard & I still had 750 rds left of winchester wild cats from hunting & trapping back in 1998? So yeah I took it. Lmao,that wildcat amo was bought in the same walmart full price in 1998 for $9.99 per 500 brick. The manager offered to buy it for himself at $10.00 per 50 box! I said no thank you! It is not a marlin model 60 favorite amo being pure soft lead,but it kept 1.5" groups at 50 yrds with 6x scope so coyote head shot capable at 50yrds. I made it work till amo was back around 2017? Then I found its flavor & you would be amazed what a cheap gun can do when you know a little about its rifling & bore diameters including land to land & groove to groove down to .001". My lube allows much tighter fitting bullets than most would ever take & it makes tiny consistent groups if you follow the cleaning & pre lube protocol. It honestly out shoots my buddies $3000.00 Anschutz rig & set up at 50yrds with a $29.00 bushnell scope on the marlin,got that at walmart too. Those soft lead rd nose wildcats like deep wider lands & grooves like the old Montgomery wards western fields ,bolt action 11 shot tube load,4 lands & 4 grooves about 3-4 thousandths deep,or even rugers with 6 land & grooved micro groove. Marlins like harder or copper plated,over sized dia bullets in high velocity. My ruger american rim fire .22lr bolt gun was $330.00,likes standard & high velocity cci plain lead or copper plated, mini mags ect. It shoots them benched with a 3x9 simmons on there like a $5000.00 rig & set up,right out of the box. That's a 22" barrel,I have the treaded 18.5" model too as well as the 22" ruger in .22mag. Marlin model 60 ,& marlin model xt tube load bolt 22" barrel. All told I dont have as much money tied up in all of them & their scopes as one entry level (cheapest model) Anschutz .22lr with out any scope. And all of them will rival or beat the anschutz with some know how & a little work & experimenting. Even if I get a tool marked lemon barrel, I can buff it smooth as glass with my cleaning kit,brush,my lube & baking soda. I'd rather get a $99- $350 lemon to work on & with than a $1500.00 lemon out of the box,which is what I got about all 5 times with my musket comp rifles. What an expensive learning experience. & almost nothing you can do legally about it! As long as it is bored centered & rifled evenly with no matter how many lands or grooves & they are of even depth & centered in the bore of the barrel, it will be a hitter with work no matter what tool Mark's it has,they will even just shoot & clean out eventually. Then all of a sudden it starts smacking stuff & consistantly too with many multiple rounds fired without cleaning if the lube is really good.
