African Lion Polar Bear Hippopotamus Salt Water Crocodile Kodiak Bear Siberian Tiger Smilodon was strong and powerful but lacked speed and agility and having fragile teeth wouldn't help in a fight a ambush killer vs proven fighters is no competition no matter the power difference Tigers have killed Bears in the wild and lions have killed Bears in captivity when a Bully meets a Fighter I'll put my money on the Fighter cause it's a safe bet.

There were no giant hyenas in North America; the only hyena that lived here which could've challenged Smilodon was the smaller Running Hyena, which may or may not have died out before the Pleistocene!

I would say theres a lot more animals that could tussel with a Smilodon. North and South America when the Smilodon was around were the most dangerous places to be. Both of those continents were filled to the brim with large and powerful carnivores and even the herbivores were just as dangerous

I know there’s evidence that smilodon lived in groups since fossils revealed that certain individuals would make full recoveries from injuries such as broken ribs and hips (you know injuries that would normally kill a cat fending for itself) however I don’t think there is evidence that the American lion lived in groups besides their modern relatives lived in prides

Actually, the term "saber-toothed cat" more correctly refers to the subfamily Machairodontinae as a whole, members of the genus Smilodon are more specifically known as "saber-toothed lions".

@arjunakorale6166, all saber-toothed cats (subfamily Machairodontinae) are named after members of the subtribe Pantherina (Greater Big Cats) in the tribe Pantherini (Big Cats) within the subfamily Felinae (Modern Cats), which is the only cat subfamily alive today, especially these genera: Smilodon (Saber-Toothed Lions), Homotherium (Scimitar-Toothed Jaguars), and Machairodus (Katana-Toothed Leopards), mainly due to their behavioral similarities to these cats.

@@indyreno2933 Actually no, The members of sub family machairodontinae have different genera than the genus Panthera, The names Smilodon, Machairodus and Homotherium actual translation corresponds as: Smilodon: Sabertooth Machairodus: Knife tooth Homotherium: Similar beast The transliteration of these names cannot correspond to "lion, Panthers, Jaguars or Tigers".

The early African & European lion (Panthera fossilis) was every bit as big as the American lion (Panthera atrox). There is also another ancient sabre-tooth cat called Machairodus kabir which was even bigger.

Although the modern big cats did not live during the time of smilodon; I think that some modern cats could kill a Smilodon.If the smaller cat that weighed only 400 pounds could kill a smilodon again I think some modern cats could kill a smilodon.I think modern cats which are much more agile and muscular could also kill the Smilodon.The Siberian Tiger can be much larger.In 1954 in Siberia a large male was killed and it weighed 854 pounds.In India a Bengal tiger in 1967 a large male was killed it weighed 857 pounds.The Siberian Tiger is built more robust than other tiger species.His teeth can be up to 5 inches long big enough to kill the Smilodon.

The steppe mammoth (Mammuthus trogontheri) & Columbian mammoth (Mammathus columbi) were both a fair bit bigger! Also, Palaeoloxodon species were MUCH BIGGER. I think that there were other proboscidean animals that were definitely bigger than the woolly mammoth.

Apparently the 2 big canines we’re pretty fragile but we’re used for slicing and ripping soft parts of the animals like throats and abdomens to kill. So I am assuming with any other predator even if it could clearly over power it and kill it, the smilodon on average could still be more of a threat to it or at least has the possibility to be lethal in fights.

Some dinos that could possibly kill a smilodon in my opinion: T-rex or tyrannosaurus rex Brachiosaurus Diplodocus (the one with a long tail) Acrocanthosaurus Velociraptor but in packs above 3 or more Megaraptor
