What difference would it make? Everyone knows arson is one significant cause of wildfires, but you can't completely stop that from happening any more than you can stop any other crime. The fires are already here. Calling it arson won't make a fire smaller or put it out any faster.

The other way around. Populated areas are close to fire zones, because humans have always lived near dangerous areas that have something they want. Earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes. Fires don't stay in one place, they move where the wind and fuel take them. And the news never mentions fires that don't threaten populations, because those don't make headlines.

The Trudeau government's policies have nothing to do with the causes of these fires. They're the common fires exacerbated by drought. If you want to blame a government, why aren't you blaming Alberta's Conservatives? Provincial governments have jurisdiction over natural resources.

Because who wants to live surrounded by a scenery of barren clearcut? Even if they did, that would make for a large and recurrent budget expense. And management of resources, including forests, is provincial jurisdiction, not federal.

Most fires are started by lightning, some are fires that wintered over. Arsonists can’t start fires that are 20 miles from the nearest road.
