I tried several times to get a wildflower patch started with little success due mostly to weeds. Finally I had some come back under a cedar tree with Vista pruning. This year I made a more concentrated effort there, now I have a decent patch with barely any weeds and there are lots and lots of different flowers :)

I live in tombstone and reserved an area of our lawn for wildflowers to help pollinators. This video was very helpful (especially the “rocky” part) I was getting worried I sentenced these little seeds to certain death but you made me feel better 😅 hopefully they start growing soon!

we had a new place to park made, had some gravel put on it. Then the wild sunflowers sprouted all over it! some got to 10 feet tall! We decided we didnt need to park there and now the sunflowers come up every year and are just beautiful! how they grow thru the rocks is amazing!

Hi Angela, i watch alot of gardening videos but this was the first one that got right to the point, and told me when to sow! I missed the perfect time in the Fall, but am gonna sow in early March, here in SE NC. I hate wishing the winter away because I hate the heat here in the summer but darn I cannot wait to do my outdoor gardening again!

Thanks so much for these tips, they were really helpful! It has been fun to identify wildflowers in a local park and help to spread their seeds to other areas, and it'll be fun to plant a bunch of store-bought native seeds soon, too. I usually have to cover seeds with a bit of dirt or hay; just enough to keep Mourning Doves from eating them.

Tip; if you missed planting your seed sowing in fall-winter you can moisten a paper towel, put the seeds evenly across half of the paper towel and fold the top half on top of the seeds place in ziplock bag; put in your refrigerator for three-four weeks. Label and date. Then plant out.

My wildflower seeds competed with field grasses already in the soil. Now three years on there is a fight going on and the grass is overtaking. My current plan is to catch as many wildflower seeds as I can, mow the area short, cover with black plastic for 6 months, then re-sow.

So what’s the difference between these wildflowers and the flowers you mention you grow in your garden? Besides perhaps the soil.
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Some of the flowers that talk about are wildflowers (larkspur for example) - the difference is how they are planted and where they are grown. I don't typically grow wildflowers in my garden beds, I sprinkle wildflower seeds around my yard and garden and they come back each year. Many of the flowers I grow in my garden beds I plant each year - they don't come back on their own. Not sure if that makes sense or not - let me know.

I want to grow annual wildflowers in a raised container (which measures about 3 by 2 feet) on my balcony in Zone 5. I was thinking of starting the seeds in egg cartons indoors and then plant those after the frost in Spring. Is this doable? I cannot find any info on it. i just think they would not survive in the metal container bed in the harsh Chicago winter.

Thank you for the information, it was all very helpful! I live in SoCal (zone 10a), we barely get any frost, should I cold stratify my wildflower seeds? Do you know if fall is a good time to plant milkweed? I tried to germinate it in the spring with mixed success but I don't know how cold hardy it is and I gotta have the butterflies, beneficials, and pollinators in my garden! Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Cold stratifying is a good idea for many types of wildflower seeds. I would guess that fall is a good time for milkweed as well.

“If the flowers are too close together, go ahead and thin out the seedlings.” What does this mean? Dig them up and replant them more spread out? Also I’m trying to landscape my new home (new homeowner). Is it ok to add wildflower seeds to an area with shrubs and other plants already? I have a tree and lilies planted on the front porch but there are flat spots in that area and I’d like it to look fuller. Is it a bad idea for this because they will crowd the other plants and the water needs will be different? TIA
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden Ай бұрын
pull out extra seedlings - leave fewer in the ground so they each have more room to grow. You can sprinkle wildflower seeds anywhere - if they get winter rains they will bloom for a few weeks in the spring but won't provide fullness other times.

Hello my dearest Angela I am following you from Australia Good morning , 8:15 am it's spring I have a question please help me if you have seen this before I have a Lemon tree , this year I lost all the lemons . They were getting rotten on the tree and falling down . Also the citrus trees that I have they are full of true bugs . What is the solution Love and respect to my BEAUTIFUL sister 🥰

Hmmm. I would check with a local nursery to see the type of bugs that cause that there in Australia - it may be different than what we have here.
@MC-ko2mx
@MC-ko2mx 2 жыл бұрын
You need to contact your local gardening group, so they can help identify the bug. Same goes for the fruit rotting. It could be a fungal issue that is specific to your area, or your state.
