Makalolo, part of Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, is an enormous stretch of inhospitable land. Two phenomenal beasts rule the area: buffalos dominate the plains with bulk, power and aggression, while lions use fear and tenacity. A lion mother teaches her young cubs unconventional hunting lessons including sometimes eating prey alive.

Of all the lion documentaries I've seen over the years, a vast majority of lions do suffocate their prey before feasting. Even though that's the case, they sometimes will start eating away while the prey is still alive, if they have trouble taking down a big prey for example. While other predators like wild dogs and hyenas will ALWAYS eat their prey alive.
@sly-fi6502
@sly-fi6502 3 ай бұрын
The only reason they suffocate prey is so they're not injured by the flailing prey, and can't shred an animal as quickly as Hyenas and wild dogs. They don't do it out of noble reasons. Hyenas and wild dogs physically can't suffocate their prey so they rely on bleeding them out. The reason the lions ate that baby alive is because it posed no danger to them with its legs broken, lions don't care if it suffers.

This is one of the things I was thinking. I saw another documentary months ago about a pride that wound up being forced to hunt exclusively elephants for a while. The had a MASSIVE struggle to make their first kill - the throat isn't easy to reach, it's not clear what is and isn't vital. I suspect that the lions stopped trying to kill the prey when it stopped struggling.

Simply because a) they have no way of killing it quickly and b) because they have to eat quickly before other predators arrive to steal it!

This is an exasperating video to watch because of the constant switching of scenes that also come with dramatic noises and the irritating flashing of sounds. It becomes over-the-top ridiculous and unnecessary dramatics when the content itself is dramatic enough. Also, why do we insist on giving our human names to wild animals; let them be wild animals and define them by their groupings and actions alone.

The whole narrative is silly and overly dramatic. If the pride doesn't usually predate on elephants, they haven't learned how to suffocate one first before eating. The pride is trying to teach is young adults how to kill properly - they are not lazy, they are being provided opportunities to learn.

I have no words, this is COMPLETE BS. All these videos are stitched together from other sources to create little narratives. Still, some of the scenes are new to me. Lions killing Elephants is the absolute hardest thing to witness, Lions don’t know how to dispatch an Elephant. Typically they bite the snout if the throat is too wide, on a normal prey animal like a Buffalo, they’ll take the mouth and the nostrils all into their mouth and bite; suffocating the animal. With an Elephant they try, but they bite the trunk, which leaves the mouth still to breathe. Lions end up getting frustrated and just start eating the poor thing. They rarely show elephant hunts in videos because the elephant screams are just horrible.

The documentary started off by immediately projecting a very human mentality onto the lions, which consisted of a misperception or misinterpretation rather, of how they go about the serious business of taking down their prey. I expected that a serious nature documentary would not have chosen to base the premise of the whole piece on anthropomorphic assumptions and an ignorance of the subject matter. Lions are magnificent animals and deserve so much better from the far less magnificent human beings.

This documentary has GREAT footage and so its worth the watch and I enjoyed it very much. But the narrative or story line is soo stupid smh i don't think anyone ever though of lions as "clean", no mess making killers lmao & I dont think this particular pride in Zimbabwe is any different from any other lion pride. Every lion kill is different. Most times they go for the windpipe and suffocate so the animals stay still enough to eat and not run away! Sometimes they just start eating. Depends on the wind lmao they're animals for Gods sake they have no bearing or thought of "let's kill it first so it doesn't suffer while we eat it alive"😂😂 its purely happenstance & what's convenient and works best for them to hunt and eat
