Wildland fire type 2 bulldozer inside and out at the August Complex fire, filmed on location at Lake Pillsbury 9/22/2020.
Wildland and forest fire fighting equipment and personnel are truly amazing . These dozer operators work in some of the most dangerous terrain and conditions: steep slopes, in the fire, next to the fire, with dangers all around. Let us show you a fire fighting bulldozer and give you a tour alongside a wild land fire fighter and a dozer operator. Join in the fun as a wildland firefighter drives a dozer for the first time. Hear the experiences and first hand knowledge from a dozer operator what makes a Caterpillar D6N LGP type 2 dozer so special.
Special thanks to:
Caleb Rowberry, Rowberry Trucking LLC.
Shaun Bowman, wildland fire fighter.

During the 70ies and 80ies my father operated a open cab D6 during fire season throughout central California. During those years the dozers were not called off before a drop. He would come home painted red, every set of nomex he owned was stained red. He died from lung cancer at the age of 45.

I operated the John Deere 350 and 450 dozers to do forestry work on fires and fire prevention like making fire breaks around planted pine and hardwood property's to protect them from fire damage and such . I did this when I was young but had been around heavy equipment from working on them to operating them do to my family being into the business and I after all these years later still look back on it as the best job I ever had and truly loved to do . There is something about it with you and that dozer out in the wild and the freedom and love for what you are doing you just can't shake it . It is like truck driving to some people if you love it then it's something you can't get out of you and the way it makes you feel .

Funny part is they don’t use the new dozers that use DEF and Re-Gen systems. Once those systems fail (sensors problems/computer problems) next to a fire your dozer will be a sitting duck.

More bells and whistles is more things to fail. I'd want mine simple as possible. The fewer computers the better in my opinion.

Just depends. Alot of government tractors are on 20 yr life cycles. Were slowly going to the new tractors as the old ones get phased out. The newer dozers atleast around this size arent bad on emissions only running 7l engines

The dozer I ran on the august complex was a 2019 d6k with all the bells and whistles and it worked amazing. I also have run multiple older d8 on fires and I’d take the d6k over those any day for fire line.

Some of the agency dozers are new enough to have DEF but they also get their service bills paid for by the government. Most private contractors like myself use older equipment because the emissions are so expensive to keep up with and not safe on the fire line because it will randomly go into limp mode or mandatory regen mode. When it does this, the machine doesn’t drive anywhere and can leave you stranded in an unsafe location. My dozer in this video is a 2007 and I think it’s a great year before all the emissions get involved.

Look on the fire.ca.gov website for information about Heavy Fire Equipment Operator HFEO. Basically to take the test you already need to be a qualified operator of construction Equipment and have the license and endorsements to haul the dozer on a low bed. When you're hired they give you the fire training.

I am trying to better understand your comment. Are you saying the dozers start fires? There are videos about wildland fire science explaining how one home burns but the one right next to it does not. I don't have the link sadly but recently I watched a 2 hr video with a fire science Dr who explains everything and uses videos of fire labs to back up his info. It's fascinating how fire works.
