A magical two mornings watching and photographing a wild Barn Owl.
Is there anything more stunning in the British countryside than a Barn Owl hunting ?
After a rare chance sighting the evening before, I head out before sunrise in perfect conditions to try and photograph him !.
I hope it conveys a "typical" wildlife photography session where frustration is the norm and a need for patience is the key. The difference this time is that both the conditions were perfect and the beautiful Barn Owl was there (eventually !).
Initially I was going to make it one video but to keep it at a sensible length I've split into two episodes. In Part One I bring you with me on the first two mornings. The first where I have planned some backlit shots and the second where I place myself in a temporary hide.
In Part Two, I'l show you an amazing short encounter after hours of frustration and discuss some thoughts on techniques.
I support the Barn Owl Trust in Devon and their website is an amazing source of useful information if you want to know more.
www.barnowltrust.org.uk
Please subscribe to this channel if you'd like to and I always appreciate constructive comments and questions as it really helps to know people are watching !!
You can follow me on my Instagram account as I put my latest images up on there: / nigelpmorley
My website: www.nigelmorley.co.uk
CAMERA SETTINGS: Individual image settings are shown at the end of the video against each image. But in addition I used Auto-ISO as maintaining a minimum shutter speed of c1/1000th was vital. As you can see though, the light was amazingly good for late winter.
FILMING: I have used footage both from my DSLR's and my Canon G7Xii but I'm sure you'll appreciate it's a very different proposition vlogging wildlife than landscapes with the randomness of the subject but I hope you'll forgive it not being up to "Planet Earth" standard but my aim was to get across the atmosphere of the day with all the associated roller coaster of emotions.
EQUIPMENT USED IN THIS VIDEO:
Nikon D4 and D810
Nikon 500mm f/4 VR II telephoto
Gitzo 3542XL Tripod
Wimberley Gimbal head
FOR THE VLOGGING:
Canon G7x Mark II on a cheap but very effective K & F tripod
Separate audio via Zoom H1 Audio recorder and a Rode lav mic.
MUSIC: All supplied by Epidemic Sound
ABOUT ME: A long time passionate wildlife/landscape photographer and conservationist, I have always shot different genres of photography but now my subjects are largely driven by love of countryside and wildlife/landscapes especially in the UK. I have a long term conservation project ongoing involving restoring land that was previously arable farmland back to wildlife friendly set aside with wildflower meadows and zero spraying etc.

Thanks for watching and commenting Jeff....I'm glad you enjoyed it. Whilst the frustration is a regular experience, it's never a bad day for me if I can be out in the countryside on a morning as stunning as that one !. I'm just in the process of editing Part Two which was on the next day where I go through a similar experience ! To be honest I've waited hundreds of hours for Barn Owls over the years and it never feels like time wasted for those moments of magic.

Having already commented on your video, a quick update .I've been lucky enough to have a pair of Barn owls nest within 200 metres of the house, with the 3 youngsters now fully fledged. Fabulous views every evening. The hard work put in to building and erecting nest boxes certainly pays off! Regards Dan

Thanks Martin....thats a great opportunity with the Barnies...hopefully you'll get more chances (offering the landowner a nice image often helps!).. actually you can carry a lot of your landscape skills into wildlife especially with using composition creatively etc...I'm in the process of doing a video on camera settings for wildlife (concentrating on focusing and exposure) so hope that gives a few extra tips...

Hello Conny, thanks for watching. With wildlife if it almost always impossible to preplan so the vlogging always has to be reactive so you get few choices on positioning or timing etc which as you say makes it quite "real"..my other videos on things like landscapes or bluebells are easier to control with nice B-roll etc . But it's nice to do both. Thanks for commenting

I did hear once that if an owl is still out to well into the day it’s because it didn’t catch enough food during the night, don’t know if it’s true but it does make sense though. With the decline in farm buildings & places for them to nest & hunt they have a really hard time of it. Great video, just subscribed. Mark.
@nigelmorley8092
@nigelmorley8092 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark..that is largely true. Generally if you see one out much after 30 minutes either side of dusk or dawn then it means they are struggling or starving..There are some exceptions. In Spring when the male is trying to impress and bond with the female he catches prey for her and brings it back to their chosen nest site to reinforce the bond ahead of mating etc so he may be less cautious/more desperate for food at that time. Also in mid summer with very short nights and possibly 4-5 chicks to feed the parents simply have to put in the hours and can compromise them slightly...The other time which I have seen in several locations is when the Barn Owl perceives his area contains zero or minimal threats..so if there are no crows or Kestrels/Buzzards to mob and harrass him and also no human disturbance then they can have the confidence to hunt in more hours of daylight but it's not their default option. The most obvious one is an Owl hunting in middle of a winter's day when despite long hours of darkness it'll be a very clear sign of starvation. Re the nest boxes, the situation has got better with a few farmers and many volunteers putting them up across the country, the big issue is still habitat destruction via development and poor farming practices.. an owl will only make a nest site where there is sufficient potential prey within a relatively short distance of the nest.. No point burning more energy than the prey provides. It is why many people are disappointed their boxes do not get used ..Hope that helps a bit. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Superb video, Nigel. I love the way you cover all the frustrations involved, as well as the moments of pure joy; that for me is what it’s all about! Thanks for the tip about under-exposing to darken the background. What exposure setting do you use, spot, partial, evaluative or centre-weighted?

Thanks Steve. I'm glad the frustration came over ok !!! Re metering I'll cover it in Part Two but usually, not always I'm on evaluative (average) metering with compensation used as it's needed but occasionally it's full manual

Thanks Senor. Headphones and AC/DC's Thunderstruck usually works !! Actually I don't as there's a real danger you'll miss something but I do take my binoculars and there's usually something to watch if you're in a hide. Also often things like crows calls give away an owl etc so I try and stay alert !! Food n water essential though

@nigelmorley8092
@nigelmorley8092 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark..thanks for watching...the hide is a circular dome one I bought about 10 years ago from Wildlife Watching Supplies in Devon..they do a range of various sizes (at a squeeze mine will take two people) ..they aren't cheapest but they do last and run by Kevin who is really helpful. My recommendation for one if just for one person for occasional use is get one of those cheap ones with a built in chair that you can find for about £75-80..they won't withstand a Force 9 gale but are very mobile and do the job. My dome one has been outside for 3-4 months at a time in winter and survived everything thrown at it

Ive found with the D850 birds need faster Shutter speed. So why didn’t you just up the SS to offset blown out white feathers vs -EV? Really excellent vlog work btw. I’d love to see you doing more of them but like you say you need a theme (inspiration).
