Climbing a tree to free a TANGLED bird!

With litter left in all sorts of places, this rescue takes it to new levels!
Out for an afternoon stroll, two ladies heard furious flapping from above, only to spot a Jay dangling from a tree branch, unable to get free.
Once Lawrie had scaled the tree, it was to his shock that the culprit was a mass of discarded fishing line, with hook included!
Make sure you watch to the end ;)

Hi guys, there's been a lot of comments about climbing gear on this one so we thought we'd answer all in one comment! As some of you may know, we have a full set of both climbing and arborist rope kit back at the centre but, when we were called to this rescue, we were told that the branch was easily within reach of a ladder and did not bring it with us. With time being a major factor in how badly the animal is hurt in cases like this, we decided that the time needed to collect the kit was too much of a risk. Lawrie is a very experienced climbing instructor and knows what he can do safely. Don't worry. We now have a small rope set in the car for such a scenario next time :)

It's easy to underestimate the height of a branch imo. It happened to me before too when I was maybe 14 or 15. My cat was sitting in a tree and I thought he could be easily grabbed by my dad, but in the end we needed a ladder because it was much higher than what I remembered.

Oh, I remember this noise ... these birds can be *very* loud. A few months ago I woke up early because a Jay was crying extremley loud outside. He got somehow trapped with one wing in our garden bench, while he was attacked by another bird (didn't see that one, probably a pidgeon or a magpie?). One side of his face was a little bit injured from the attack, but after I held him for a while, trying to calm him down (which actually worked somehow) he flew away - kinda hobbling in the air - and rested in a tree for while. I hope he's fine now. :)

Just a little tip from my own experience at a wildlife rescue centres. With Jays (and magpies and jackdaws) if they are snipping at your fingers while examining them, put a small stick in their beak. They will usually hold on and bite the stick for a bit in stead of biting your fingers. Also helps them calm down a bit.

Nice job, and what a beautiful Corvid, albeit a rather unappreciative one! By the way, the better-run angling societies require that members report the location of line breakages and fishing line entanglements/snags to the society, so that the line and tackle can be retrieved and disposed of in a safe way (the best way of disposing of nylon fishing line is to cut it up into ~1 inch lengths using a pair of scissors. That way, it no longer represents a strangulation or ensnarement risk to wildlife and pets).
