WildStar was an MMORPG that existed from 2014 to 2018, This was a theme park sci fi MMO with cartoon graphics, hardcore PVE content, 2 factions, multiple different races and classes, PVP arena and battlegrounds, crafting, top tier player housing and a light hearted tone that people still miss to this day...In this video I found a WildStar private server and decided to boot up the game to see how it would feel if it was still around to this day.
What did you think about WildStar? was this an MMO that you'd play again if it was relaunched, do you miss this game? tell me your thoughts an memories on this MMORPG in the comments below!

WildStar Wikipedia Description
WildStar was a fantasy/science fiction massively multiplayer online role-playing game that was developed by Carbine Studios, published by NCSoft. It was unveiled on August 17, 2011 during Gamescom. WildStar took place on the fictional planet Nexus, where a mysterious and powerful race known as the Eldan have disappeared, leaving behind a wealth of technology and secrets for players to explore.
The game was released on June 3, 2014 with a subscription and later changed to free-to-play on September 29, 2015. While it was no longer required to pay for a subscription, those who did were "signature" members, getting a few bonuses such as increased experience/currency gain.
On September 6, 2018, NCSoft announced the immediate closure of Carbine Studios and that WildStar 'would begin the process of winding down'. An exact shut-down date was not given but later stated to be November

Def a game with tons of potential but the literal only reason the FF14 treatment worked is because it was already a massively successful IP for decades with a huge and loyal audience. As much as I’d like to see it happen a re-release of WildStar would pretty much be guaranteed to flop.

The moment I first logged into the beta I thought "This. This will be my forever game" and until the server shut down it was. It hit all the right notes for me regarding humor, combat, story, and setting. I would absolutely still be logging in if it were up and running. The very same reason why I stopped playing games like these long ago. You grind your life away to content that is one day being deleted. I remember developing enxiety of how long will a game last, will I finish it before they shut down the servers to the point I said F it all I rather preserve time and my sanity ... I wish these games have a SP option so when they shut it down we get to continue play alone with NPCs and enjoy it as is. Im afraid in this case the game's death was the dev's fault, not NCSoft's. While the game had many aspects that were simply incredible (ie. The company bankrolling Windstar was expecting a WoW killer out of the gate for some reason, and when it was only moderately successful after all the development they put into it their board hit the eject button hard. Canned over half of the dev team only like a month after launch. Fuckin heartbreaking man. Like you said, it could VERY MUCH still be making money to this day, but as Jim Stephanie Sterling likes to say since it wasn't "making literally all of the money" they weren't interested in continuing the project.

I absolutely love Wildstar, and I still consider that to be my #1 MMORPG! I have less attention span for gaming nowadays compared to my younger years, but I will play it like crazy if it ever gets a revival. Little random tidbit I remember: There's a side quest where you had to help out a couple. After finishing the quest they tell you that they're having financial difficulties after paying all their debt, but they just recently took a side gig to help out with their income issues. They never tell you what that side gig is because it's pretty much pointless at this point, but when you go to explore their bedroom you'll see cameras on each side of the bed suggesting that the couple have been... recording their private moment, quite possibly live streaming it for money. And there's no other room that's like that. It's one small detail I'll never forget LOL!

I played with Wildstar from the headstart to the last days last hour in 2018 November. Wildstar was unique, however the developer team killed the potential. The world was awesome all of them were great but with some stupid decisions, they collapsed the whole community day by day. For the first time it was too hardcore for casual (literally complete guilds couldn't go to raid for months, then when a lot of people unlocked it it was hilariously buggy. Which was one of the most crucial fault in a game where the positioning and accuracy were the most important thing because of the telegraph system), later the whole game became too casual for anybody. The GM of my WoW guild back in 2009 was a quest designer for WildStar and about 6 members of our raid team including our main tank and off tank were working for him on the game as well. I remember being asked after raids different things about which WoW content drew us to the game as it was very influential in their design decisions. Several designers of the game were former blizzard employees and before the game was released my GM Brendan jumped ship to Trion Worlds to work on Defiance and is now at Bungie part of the Destiny development team. The Carbine Studios team was compromised of many young developers for which this was their first triple a title and they did try their absolute best. I never got into WildStar too much as I was at the time still very invested in WoW. That being said yes I would give this game a more fair chance if they ever brought it back online as it was fairly engaging thinking back and probably better than the state of WoW is today. *edited to check my facts*

I don't think it would survive long even these days honestly. The design had a focus on 'hardcore' players, who tend to be a tiny fraction of a game's population, and the things it did to cater to the hardcore ultimately drew the more casual players away, who are lifeblood of a large scale production like Wildstar was. The games that can afford the very narrow focus Wildstar wanted are indie games with relatively cheap production and maintenance in comparison.
@bloodforgedking7381
@bloodforgedking7381 Жыл бұрын
@@val7885 I kind of agree, but at the same it seems that the 'casual' MMORPGs are starting to die off. ESO's latest push to trying to become even more casual friendly (however badly it's played out) has cost them a large portion of players recently. I think hardcore is starting to see a resurgence with the playerbase getting bored of generic and easy MMO's with no real incentive to "git gud". WoW classics were supposed to flop for being "more hardcore", but it turns out that's what a lot of players wanted.

Would definitely play it again. I loved it on release. I think the Ratchet & Clank vibe just made sense for an MMO. It seemed super fresh and unique for its time, especially the classes and profession mix-ups. I think this could have been one of the best console MMOs as well due to the design and combat system. I really enjoyed Wildstar! I made it to the end-game raids but had to stop before finishing it due to grad school, but I really liked the combat and the abilities system. It was really fun to be able to customize things on the fly to add a dot or a stun/interrupt to your abilities. The story was also super cool and engaging. I was really sad they weren't able to flesh it out more. I was completely engaged in the game up until the developers had a huge announced event to celebrate some milestone (I can't remember if it was 6 months or 1 year) of the game being release. They made a bunch of posts and had sever announcements leading up to it. My guild was so hyped we called off a raid to see the event going on and it ended up being literally a stress test in anticipation of going as f2p. Absolutely demolished the vibe and motivation. I don't think I raided another night after that and the guild quickly fell apart as people jumped ship.

It was a very strange experience, it had this very cartoony aesthetic full of funny quests and dialog and a general feeling of a great casual family friendly game. then the questing experience starts to slow down a few zones in and you hit the first dungeon.... which was painful. It almost feels like this was made by 2 teams not talking to each other, one was designing a fun / casual game with a wide audience in mind and another that wanted a brutal hardcore game that required allot of grinding and high skill cap gameplay to even hit end game. If they had toned down the levelling curve and reduced the difficulty of the dungeons (even if that meant just putting the more difficult version in a separate difficulty) the game could very well have survived long enough to sort some of the late game issues (like a fairly generic questing hub for dailies). I started this game with a group of friends and they all fell off around the same time (roughly lvl 30) because the levelling just started to drag on needlessly and the quest variety was essentially "Kill 15 of this thing". If the first two zones set the tone for the rest of the game it could have been allot more fun.

I was there from the very beginning before launch and all the way to the end. Definitely was my favorite thing to do in those years. I could go on and on about what was fun about it, but for some reason harkening back to what led to its demise is also enjoyable. The game was too ambitious with their content release schedule and ended releasing too many things too quickly with too many bugs while still committing too many new content releases before last quarter's content still wasn't corrected. The lootboxes that they started to implement and the weird random lottery layoffs they started doing... and one of the random layoffs was the senior developer. Catering to the very vocal minority(?) of players on how to balance their classes and giving up their vision on classes caused some aspects of kits to feel super strange. I feel like the company was pressured on all sides to cave in on not only their vision, but also the game. Wish it didn't happen. There's nothin' quite like WildStar that made you wanna put on your space cowboy boots and run around the galaxy with your friends. What a good game. @@Aethernyl There hasn't been a single successful mmorpg that's built only for hardcore players(talking about ones made after 2004). That is primarily what WildStar was built around and for. WildStar's whole philosophy was centered around the fact that it was for the hardcore players of old before games like WoW became more casual friendly. Well, what they miscalculated was that games started introducing more casual friendly content because that's what the vast majority of people enjoyed on a day to day basis. If all Blizzard did was catered to hardcore raiders/hardcore pvpers/hardcore m+ players, what do you think would happen to the game? It'd start hemorrhaging players because the amount of people who do that content is and forever will be the minority. Oh...interesting how that sounds exactly like what's happened to WoW doesn't it? There's a reason why even though both WoW and FFXIV holds hard endgame raid content that FFXIV gains players and WoW lost them and it has nothing to do with the WoW harassment controversies(see Riot and the fact that everyone is loving them and looking forward to their new MMO). It's because FFXIV has a plethora of content designed to engage the casual player base, WoW doesn't anymore. It used to design content to keep casuals happy, but not since MoP pretty much. Taking this back to WildStar, WildStar did what WoW is currently doing and only made it's content to cater to the hardcore player base. Except WildStar was a new IP and didn't already have millions hooked by the balls like WoW did to stick around. Nobody in their right minds want to deal with 40 man raids except the most hardcore raid purist you can find. It is a logistical nightmare trying to get that many people to commit to a timeframe to raid. Literally just think for one second how much of a nightmare it is to get 40 people to agree to a time slot to all raid together. Now think how much of a nightmare it is to get that many people together that get along and won't cause drama. Now add to that number by about 10-20 because people will ALWAYS end up not showing up eventually and you need 40 people. I really shouldn't have to say anymore than that for why it is a terrible fucking idea to try to make a new mmorpg be designed for 40 man raids. There is a reason WoW ditched that design and why new mmorpgs didn't attempt to pick it back up aside from WildStar which promptly died faster than hummingbird's wing's flap.

It's a shame to see you cannot play more yet, but here's hoping the private server development goes smoothly!

I had a blast with the game's pvp when it came out. As soon as I could start doing battlegrounds I leveled all the way to max level doing it. For me the game went to crap when people could get a full set of new gear once you reached a certain battleground rating. it wasn't time gated like WoW, you could have a full OP set of gear in one day, if you had the rating. If you didn't have the gear, you couldn't compete.

It had so much going for it. I was superhyped! But sadly, it had terrible optimization when it came out. I had 25 FPS on a new system, and the devs ignored any posts on the forum. It was such a dissapointment. Quit after a week.

At end game the telegraphing never got annoying imo. I loved this game so much! I would play it if it came back. It was my favorite mmo so far

Even with it being fairly old the stylistic choices make it still look fairly great. Really wish the raid attunement wasn't so atrocious at launch I hit max level and just quit since it was going to be such a huge hassle to get into raiding.

This was one of my favorite mmos. I had some really good times playing it. I wish they would have sold it to a team that cared and understood what the community wanted and needed. A few changes could of made this a long standing top tier mmo.

The team making it DID know, and they cared IMMENESLY. It was the publisher that was the problem. They were expecting a WoW killer out of the gate for some reason, and when it didn't make what they hopped it would in only the launch month, rather than iterating and improving and green-lighting expansions and further work they hit the eject button. Half the dev team got laid off only 30 days in, and even more left as a result. The team was on life support before they had even finished rolling out the first 3 months of story updates, and no more major ones were ever made. No major fixes ever implemented. Not because it's creators didn't want the best for it, but because the plug was pulled.

Oh wow....the amount of nostalgia I'm feeling while watching this video....I played the beta and was so distraught when I found out the game was getting shut down in 2018. I remember loving the uniqueness of this game compared to others I had played at the time, like WoW, Tera, and Blade & Soul. I miss this game so much

Was there when the servers shut down. I did cry a bit. I was frustrated I did not get to play it enough. It came out in a weird time in my life, but I lost a job and sat down...and experienced it all...and it was the kinda game I could just ..be in. I miss it dearly.

I would definitely still play it. I grinded through the attunement for the raid but everyone I played with quit before finishing it.

The game had a great hype pre release with the weekly videos, the team were hilarious. The in game humour was great, the loot piñata every kill was great. Combat was freeflowing an enjoyable, I was genuinely sad when it closed, I would definitely still be playing today if it was live!

I used to play Wildstar on and off, like a week or two per year. I liked it, but none of my friends joined me so I would inevitably go do something else. I loved the path sidequests and the movie-like scenarios. The combat still hasn't been beat, housing was great, and I'm always very sad when I remember how bad the marketing was for this game.

WildStar, my beloved. You were gone too soon. Killed by, primarily, NCSoft's mishandling of anything they touch. I would absolutely still be playing it and would absolutely be doing the raids at the hardest level. I remember doing a raid and was floored at the interesting encounter designs.

I can see that. Honestly it's reminding me of that single player game Biomutant that came out around 2 years ago. Now I need to finally play it I bought it when it came out and it's just sat in my steam library
