Choosing a new vehicle to tow a van around Australia was not a simple decision for us. We deliberated over it for a heck of a long time.
Heres a insight into how we narrowed down what we think was the best choice for us. Comparing trucks (Isuzu, Fuso), yank tanks (F150, RAM 1500, RAM 2500, Silverado ect), Y62 Patrol, Toyota LandCruisers (VDJ200, 79 series, 300 series), Next Gen Ford Ranger, Ineos Grenadier and other mid size dual cabs like our Dmax (Hilux, BT50, Triton, Amarok ect).
If you're in the market for a new tow vehicle, I hope this helps you make the right decision for your needs!
Cheers!

Great vid! I went the y62 as the main difference not mentioned is Ti is standard with 8 seats and can run it as 6 or 7 with a fridge and drawer setup. We wanted flexibility as a daily to pickup other kids/ friends etc. Gx 300 only a 5 seater. Hence you need to compare to the Gxl or vx for a real comparison in value if seats is important to you. Back seat room in the y62 is far more hence another reason I went that way. Both great cars.

Another good vid, and solid choice. 1. You can get pre rego gvm and gcm upgrades for most, ie: VDJ79 = gvm 4200, gcm 7400, and recognised nationally with lovels system. 2. When comparing 98 octane with 91 octane in same vehicle the cost per km for me was almost identical reflecting increased efficiency with 98 octane. 3. Y62 use tare weight not kurb weight like toyota meaning you need to add another 100kg for fuel, but still a nice car.

A great explanation on how you came to your decision. I think you are the only one who has dismissed the RAMS/Silverado due to size and weights. You are spot on imo. Not many vehicles could snatch a bogged RAM on a soft beach , plus a lot of 4WD tracks are narrow and tight. The bigger yank tanks wouldn’t suit anyone who like remote touring imo
@WildTouring
@WildTouring Жыл бұрын
Yes I tend to agree! They make a great tow rig though.
@TheTripleDubya
@TheTripleDubya Жыл бұрын
We just bought the Silverado, avoiding the beach unless we have similarly equipped friends with us can be limiting as can some of the tracks but to be honest, most of the time it’s just not going to be a problem, self healing protection wrap helps. Buying it stings a bit but then you price up a chopped cruiser and realise that the Chev with the mods I want, will still be cheaper than a stretched 300 and I’ll have a lot more power and not be on my limits all of the time. Having said that, with a lighter van, a modded but not chopped 300 GXL would be a brilliant choice.

Cant fault your choice for you, Tiff and the growing family. you've nailed it with the weights and working through those to get what you need, with some buffer. Its the area some get wrong..... Hope ots not too long to wait. And a quick question, in the GX what is the sound like. Do they have some sound deadening in it from factory.

Cam, I understand your phase of life. My kids are adults now. My Dmax, with canopy is set up for beach fishing or touring. I don’t want to tow a caravan. If I’m remote, I’m in a tent. Great analysis. I went with a GXL 300 for a lot of the same reasons. One thing we found is that the standard shocks/springs do not cope at all well with adding a bullbar and winch. It was horrible to drive. Forced us to upgrade to a Dobinsons basic 2" lift which transformed it back to a nice ride again.

Well done and very thorough process Cam - I’m at the ‘elder’ end of life but relatively comfortable thanks to taking on the advice of others I trust and my own instinct - you’ve wisely prioritised the safety of your loved ones and others on the road but according to research a lot of folk are knowingly or unknowingly illegal road users due to their excess touring weight - a NSW chap has been jailed for six years after causing one or more fatalities when his overweight 4WD/caravan got out of control on a down hill road and destroyed everything - a good thing you’ve avoided the Ford Ranger with reports of complete screen failure, stopping dead from 80km per hour and 10 speed transmission overheating issues - Ford, Land Rover and US built vehicles have poor reliability - enjoy the new Toyota work horse.

Cam your breakdown of which vehicle to purchase is very thorough. I to do a similar process to help choose the right vehicle. I’ve owned the LC200 and Y62 and now have a LC300. As you said the price difference is minor between the two main players. Being lighter and equally as well equipped as the competition plus more modern tech made me also choose the 300.

I daily drove a Ram 2500 diesel with a 7" lift on 37s for 12 years. Easy daily driver and the 14k lb winch in the front bumper took care of any recovery that was required. The truck was a little over $40k and the lift, winch, free spin hubs, lockers, winch and winch bumper added another $12k. Knowing what I know now I would always go 3500 with the diesel.

Been watching your channel for quite a while now, and enjoy all of your content. I wish you all the best in your new purchase. I am loving our XLT Next-Gen Ranger, and as it is just my wife and I, we do not need any gvm upgrades to tow our 3.1T van. Once the car is finished at TJM, it will be a lot better on the road, and off-road for that matter. If you remember, I sold our Y62, as the fuel consumption is not sustainable long term ( especially when retired ) and we plan on going everywhere around Aus in about 10 yrs time. One thing that did shit me, was the noise from the contents rattling around in the fridge in the back, especially on rough tracks and roads..... IMHO, the "hot vee" has to be the dumbest idea ever.........where will the heat go??

Not sure how it works in WA but if you go for the GVM upgrade in NSW prior to registration you will be exempt from the luxury tax and those money go towards the GVM upgrade. If it works like this in WA, you could remove the cost of the upgrade from your spreadsheet. The back seats space in the 300 is minuscule compared to a Y62. Once you add 2 car seats there’s not lots of space left to the imagination (although you have the boot space) Anyway, good comparison mate and good luck with your travels!! 😊

Hi Cameron, great talk and well explained. I'm not completely sure but it is my belief that all the state's got together in QLD and talked about gvm and gcm upgrades Qld being the first state to allow this to go ahead after registration. I'm led to believe that all states will follow shortly afterwards. I know this will help a lot of people who travel over limits finally to get the relevant upgrades to be legal on the road, without necessarily having to change cars. It's about time the country became uniform so confusion is aliminated

These weight capacity upgrades are not the answer. It just means you're "tail is wagging the dog", which is not safe. That's why they're not legal in all states (not surprising QLD has succumbed). Get your van weight down, and don't overload your vehicle. This is about your families, and everyone's else's, safety. 3.5 tonnes is still 3.5 tonnes, on an unstable platform - caravan pig trailer, attached to a 2.7 tonnes vehicle (even if it's had the upgrade). It's all good until it isn't, when you have to hit the breaks suddenly, or drop into a gutter because a road train is coming the other way. The physics doesn't add up, no matter what your "opinion" is. Heavy is heavy. It's not worth your families life.

Awesome analysis Cam, as you know was going though the exact same decision making process, Y62 or 300 or 200. Luckily for me I don’t need to tow a big van, so the FJ is getting a massive birthday and staying for a few more years. Great episode 🤙🏼

Did you look into the oil burning issue Toyota don’t want to admit to?? Be interesting what your thought are on this. Especially since you are looking at long trips.

They are also cracking exhaust manifolds, has about a 6% failure rate currently. It’s always going to have problems being a first generation vehicle, better to wait a few years for Toyota to do revisions especially on a brand new platform

@@jjsadv well yeah I know this, it’s a common byproduct of that design. It’s a fairly common problem even on traditional setup. Wafer thin cast manifolds and reductions in metal quality due to covid.

Y62 at that base price is only a platform, add at least $30k and it will beat any 4x4 on the market. ($130 - $150 is still better than the stock 300 series or F250)
@WildTouring
@WildTouring Жыл бұрын
ALL of those prices listed are for stock vehicles? Beat any 4x4 at what?? And why? Y62s are a good rig, and has proven to be pretty reliable and capable. But I think the 300 is a better option for a tow rig for US. I can tell you why- It makes more torque, is more economic, diesel is more readily available, has a solid rear axle, more gearing, more payload, suspension is much cheaper to upgrade (also simpler/less to go wrong), there are more Toyota dealers around the country.

Love the spread sheets, I do the same thing :) great choice any of the 2 would have been great, but the diesel 300 will be better on the hip pocket when towing...

Yep, coming from a Y62 you definitely made the right choice. Once you get over the awesome V8 there's no great thing about it for remote touring. I've rolled the dice on a 2nd hand F250 myself but you've made an excellent piont about the 300, but then again I've never really been sensible when it comes to buying cars!😅🍻 Love ya work!👌

Ok so simply put. What you've done is set your requirements, and will purchase a vehicle that conforms to those requirements ? You've just found quality. Quality is simply "conformance to requirements". It's not price based, it's not brand based, and you will never suffer from buyers remorse . 👍 One thing i'd suggest is paying attention to axle loads. Throwing springs and shocks at a vehicle gives you the warm and fuzzies, but does nothing for the axle loads

Just letting anyone know the only thing a gvm upgrade is, is the uprated rear leaf springs. You can buy higher constant load spring for under 1k. The bushes and other parts that go in the front don't actually help. For example the only difference between the 2500 and the 3500s in the states is the spring pack in the rear.

Just letting you know that your statement is inaccurate. Sure, most GVM upgrades are just springs, but some include replacement diff housings that are a lot stronger also😉
