I am glad I can help, I struggled to find real information on the daily jobs and living arrangements of station life in Antarctica and want to be able to share my experiences to maybe help some decide if it is or is not the job for them.

The Snowies are just as bitterly cold in Winter as a Summer is down here in Antarctica, it can be surprisingly warm down here due to the lack of humidity.

Do you use the GPS just for position, or do you use it for auto steer also?

For position and waypoints. I wish we had auto steer, could really kick back and relax then!

How many coms devices do you need obviously the risk assessments have got totally out of control . my first trip to the now runway sight was in a unmog plow truck from Staiton I was following the f250 monster truck who I lost after 10 min in a mild blizzard I had a compass a hand held vhf that did not work 5k from station and a heading It was adventurous to say the least and returned with a 8 trailer train and towing the snow groomer behind a D7 G that took 8 hrs at least it had a gps to the top of the Plato grate trip that day one of many in that year .

If it can be complicated, there will be certainty of it being overcomplicated! We were only looking at a slide show the other day in the LQ of the old camp at Wilkins, the F truck on tracks and the old Red Unimog, Hoover said she was a good old beast.

535 quad tracks? Built an hours drive south of me.

Do you run auto steer in them? Think it would be good for bad vision conditions.

These ones are 485 Quads, no auto steer unfortunately, have to manually watch GPS and steer in whiteout conditions (much harder than it sounds) Just got a couple brand new 500's arrive a week ago, will put a vid up of them in a couple months

@@thommosaussieadventures2654 To bad they don't have light bars hooked to the GPS. Makes it easier tracking straight line in a limited sight situation. Thanks for the insight into Arctic operations.
